Under what rules? - only the ANKC has published rules To achieve what qualification? - only the ANKC awards titles in obedience. If you are interested in achieving titles to national standard under a published set of rules, and under trained and accredited judges then right now only the ANKC offers that. Its all well and good to say there can be other options but it would be a huge effort to introduce a system that matched what the ANKC has to offer. Individual affiliates may run the trials but they are run and judged to an agreed and nationally consistent standard. The qualification I get in WA can count towards a dog's title in Qld. Most obedience trials here struggle to break even on a costs basis - there isn't even a financial incentive to create another scheme.

With fluid treatment a huge factor in the survival of parvovirus, there's is no way on earth I'd again darken the doorstep of the vet who sent her home. Unbelievable.
-
If your pup is at the vets and receives the right treatment, she has a good chance of survival. If she is not at the vets, she should be. Where have your uncles dogs and your dog been? Even vaccinated dogs can transmit the virus and places like dog parks tend to be hot spots for it. I hope she pulls through OK.

Three Years Ago Now Kuga, A Very Special Old Man
poodlefan replied to hortfurball's topic in Rainbow Bridge
RIP Kuga... I loved the photographic journey through his life. -
:happydance: Then what Diva said. ;)
-
Really? How do you find out about them.
-
that is good to know as that rumor it was going around a few years ago. If the Border Collie was an Australian breed, wouldn't it sit on the verandah, telling the farmer it couldn't be buggered to herd today because it was too hot and asking for a cold one while it watched the cricket?

Dog That Sit Like Frogs...
poodlefan replied to aussielover's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The only way you can tell if she has good hips is if she's xrayed Yep, plenty of dyspastic dogs do the 'frog dog' position. -
Yeah so what about the Border Collie and the JRT? They werent recognised in the country of origin before the rest of the world took up the Australian Standard. Then they must have been recognised here as a "new breed".
-
For anyone interested in reading this for themselves rather than reading Poodlefanspeak: Part 6 "The Register and Registration" of ANKC regulations addresses breed recognition. You can download that from the website and the relevant section of that document is Section 10. Link to ANKC regulations here. Recognition of overseas breeds and new breeds is covered. Section 10.3 has a stinger.
-
The Large Munsterlander's country of origin isn't the USA. We'd recognise the breed because the Registry in its country of origin (Germany?) does. For any USA developed breed, AKC recognition is mandatory for ANKC recognition.
-
But it's not recognised by the AKC so what is to stop her standardising the breed here? It's certainly happened before - BC and JRT come to mind. 2 breeds developed in Australia without the consent of the country of origin. She'd then need to apply for "new breed" recognition. Then you get the five generations of breeding, establishment of a standard etc etc. Australia would then be the country of origin.
-
It does. How is that, Poodie? Dogs get recognised as breeds without the say so from the country of origin. Disclaimer - is this woman even going for ANKC regodnition - I didnt read the whole article See explanatory post above. The dog must be recognised by the Registry the ANKC considers to be the registry in the country of origin. This is starting to sound like something out of Monty Python or Yes Minister
-
It is recognized here already, in the UKC registry. ANKC is not the only registry in the world. Dogs are not only recognized in ANKC. Now I suppose we have to talk about what does it mean to be "recognised". You won't be showing or getting ANKC papers for a Klee Kai in this country until the ANKC recognises the breed. For a dog of US origin, that means that the Registry the ANKC recognises as the American purebred register (the AKC) does. Same deal for Silken Windhounds. They are recognised by some FCI countries but until the AKC does, they won't be shown here.

You're right. To me its just another box to tick on the path to making a decision to breed a particular animal. My belief about why it tends to be seen as the be all and end all is that its one factor that doesn't tend to separate the wheat from the chaff in terms of responsible breeding. Right now, if I wanted a "mini husky" I'd be looking at a sable German Spitz Mittel. The fact that you're average punter doesn't know some breeds exist is part of the problem.

I changed chip details direct with the microchip register. Get home address changed with the vet too!

Barkly - Time For A Program
poodlefan replied to Luke W's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
One more thing - chewing (I seem to have read somewhere) for a dog is a serotonin release trigger. The more chewing he does, the calmer and happier he's likely to be. If, over time, you became concerned about Barkly's arousal levels Luke, I'd be thinking about a thryoid test. However I don't think that's warranted atm. -
More Questions About My Foster Boy - Huey!

And if, in ignorance of appropriate quarantine procedures, you take that foster dog out and about, you may end up being a life taker. Thumbs down ARQ.. not good at all. -
Barkly - Time For A Program
poodlefan replied to Luke W's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Susan Garratt makes an interesting point about self control - she says it needs to be learned and that dogs have to learn to tolerate and deal with boredom. Descriptions of Barkly here suggest to me that you've done a lot to enrich his life - no bad thing but I think you need to balance that sometimes with teaching him to chill out. I have a Cocker owning friend with a dog that sounds a lot like yours. He's her first dog since she retired and he simply isn't at all used to spending time without her and his self control in arousing situations is low. I'm not a total advocate of all Ms Garratt says but I do think some of her crate games can be useful. I'm a great believer in requiring a dog to wait for reward (be that food or what it wants) and of building duration for such things. In addition, I have noted that some of the dogs I see in agility classes that display high degrees of arousal to other dogs (and indeed generally) and low degrees of owner focus are primarily (and in some cases only) exercised by being taken to offlead parks. Regardless of how you view these places, my belief if that they need to be used in moderation and that other forms of exercise are important both physically and mentally to a dog. That is particularly the case where it comes to calm onlead behaviour and owner focus. I'm also a believer that dogs tend to reflect their owner's emotional state. So (*prepare to faint folks and get the smelling salts for Corvus* ) I would pay some heed to Mr Milan's point about calm assertive behaviour making an impact on a dog - that sort of stuff really DOES flow down the lead. But you know what Luke - you've recognised there's behaviour in your dog you're not happy with and you're doing something about it. That probably puts you in the top 10 percentile of "good dog owners". Good on you. -
Champion Class- Should We Have A Seperate Class?
poodlefan replied to Stolzseinrotts's topic in General Dog Discussion
Ain't that the truth. -
I agree with the importance of health testing. I wonder what health issues the breed has though, if any. I doubt there'd be any DNA testing available. Most Whippet breeders don't health test for anything.

She is also selling them entire......mmm how long till Klee Kai crosses are being sold? Give it a year and the puppy buyers may try to recoup the ridiculous cost of their first dog. wow lots of snooty assumptions abound in this thread! I'm inclined to agree. If someone saw a breed (in development or not) they liked, did the hard yards to import a couple and sells pups to willing buyers for $$$$ I can't find anything objectionable in that. They're not compelled to seek ANKC recognition or become a member. They're certainly not compelled to become any kind of breed founder for others.
