Your other option is to only run with with large dogs you know will behave appropriately. That means dogs known to you. That can't be done in a public dog park

Can I ask, is Max's reaction to these dogs "normal" or should he be taught to tolerate them? I'm just worried that he is the one with the problem, not them, iykwim. I also suggest dont go to that park anymore....stick to Pugwood. Max is reacting like a typical Pug, and if you put him in that situation too often he could be asking for a fight. You have to remember that Max thinks he is as big as a Rotti and he will stand up for himself if pushed too far by a big dog. Somehow I doubt that. Max tried to remove himself from these dogs. He couldn't. If flight wasn't an option, he didn't have many others..

Max's behaviour is both natural and normal for a dog being intimidated by others - he's telling them to back the hell off. Your job as his owner is to ensure that he doesn't get placed in situations like this. That means actively intervening to stop it happening or preventing it happening. My first suggestion is that you don't use a ball in a dog park populated by other dogs - it tends to be a magnet for dogs and can create dust ups over possession of one. My second suggestion is one you won't like - don't run him with big dogs. Sadly, some dog owners seem to think that anything goes unless their dogs are in some kind of danger. Your only option when they trot out the "mine only wants to play" argument is to tell them to call their dogs off because yours doesnt. Good luck. Some larger dog owners can't see an issue and you've got little chance of convincing them. One wonders if they'd feel the same seeing their two year old child chased and roughed up by a bunch of adult rugby players but that's their view. So I'd say don't use the park when there are larger dogs there. That's what many small dog owners (including me) have had to do.

Housetraining The Older Dog.

I'd not give it any more than a "maybe". Sounds to me like a consult with a decent behaviorist might be your best starting point. This can help with issues between the dogs and give you strategies for managing the transition inside. -
Toilet Training My Poodle-x

Thank you sooo much! Just the advice ive been after! Will get onto it Hate to rain on this parade but there's no way I'd leave a pup unattended in such a pen. The risk of them catching a leg trying to climb out is real. Anything you leave a pup unattended in needs to be roofed IMO. Charlie is there any particular reason your pup cannot have access to your yard? Have you considered installing a dog door? You've got a mix of two very active breeds that needs exposure to fresh air and sunlight AND the daily opportunity for decent exercise to grow well. I'd be opting for a dog door and making at least part of your yard safe. -
Install a dog door or get up to him. Two of my older dogs can't make it through the night.

The point is, it could look like a nice dog and pass the three available tests. It's not the dog in front of you, it's what's behind it that really counts. Type, temperament, structure and soundness In some cases (perhaps not SBTs) those will be knowns, even if the dog isn't registered with the controlling body.
-
RSG, I'd be hoping like hell that any dog with a disqualifying breed fault and a dodgy bill of health wouldn't get the nod. The devil in this proposal, will no doubt be in the detail.

Thereby denying a whole new generation of dog breeders a start with decent bloodlines. I despair about the short sightedness of those that won't release a main register dog to anyone and that won't give a newb a shot. Bo Bengston, when interviewed about things he took great pride in as a breeder mentioned one thing first. He said his greatest source of pride over his years of breeding Whippets was that he had given 46 Whippet exhibitors/breeders their first show champion with a dog with his prefix. That's what I call a breeder with a strategic perspective. To me there is no greater tragedy than to see a great kennel's bloodlines die with its breeder's exit from the fancy. Somewhere between desexing and Limited Registering everything and Main Regisistering everything because you really don't give a damn there should be some scope for the next generation of dog breeders/exhibitors.
-
Me neither, I'd love to see some fresh blood in whippets, as long as they're health tested first. I much prefer the old style smaller whippet and you hardly ever see them these days. I see them all the time at country shows in NSW Kirislin - often with the horse trucks. In the UK, there are thousands of Whippets that aren't registered with the KC - most are hunters and racers
-
Limited register dogs already have pedigrees. I don't see how this could apply to them. Note to breeders - microchip your pups people! DNA profiling would also kill any moves to register limited register pups in this manner. Lilli: AKC have it for Basenji's from Africa too. Basenji breeders struggle with a limited gene pool and hunt for dogs in Africa from time to time. My Basenji breeder friend tells me the last hunt reaped some good dogs.

Not a crazy idea and not a new one either. I can vouch for the fact that the American Quarter Horse Association did (and perhaps still does) allow registration of horses deemed by judges to fit the breed standard. There are some bloody nice Whippets out and about in this country that have been bred for decades by folk who never bothered to register them. Interestingly, many are on the smaller side at a time when size is an issue in the breed. I'm sure there are similar breeds in the UK.. in working lines in particular. As long as there's a standard for quality, I don't have a problem with this.

It matters because the dog is not the only element in the situation. There is always a balance of risk and cost. I'm saying you can't assess that balance if you only look at whether the dog is 'harassing' sheep or not. Maybe the risk is high and the potential cost high, maybe the risk is moderate but the potential cost extremely high... whatever, no situation will be the same and therefore shouldn't be judged on one side of the coin alone. What is the risk of things going wrong, how badly wrong are they likely to go, and what would be the potential cost if they did go wrong? That's how we make decisions about OH&S, and I think it is how we make decisions whenever we are not purely driven by emotion. The dog is the only element in the situation that simply shouldn't be there. Stray dogs on farming property are dead dogs. That's how decisons are made by people who get to see what a dog can do to stock. You shoot them if you see them because its when you don't that they tend to cause complete mayhem. And once again, its not the shooter that should receive condemnation but the owners who allow their dogs to roam. Yes, accidents can happen but no farmer can tell a responsibly owned dog from any other and any dog is a potential stock maimer or killer. Don't want your dog's shot? Contain them. Simple really. -
How do you think the marks occured.. if she was chewing or rubbing her head against wire, its difficult to determine what the kennel owners might have done about it. Was she kennelled alone? Did she have any interactions with other dogs (not yours)?

What I'd like in a trailer: * galvanised chassis and draw bar * long draw bar * double axles * minimum 1.6m wide internally (so 3 x 3 gazebos fit in sideways) * false floor for storage with optional pull out drawers. I don't care if a trailer doesn't have drainage provided you can hose it out. * solid rear wall and behind that rear opening doors with room for trolleys (so they are inside and dry) That would require spares fitted low or elsewhere * custom pinstriping and decals * optional pull out BBQ/Stove and gas bottle. Maybe do this up the front. * tall enough to have a roll out awning I think people are prepared to pay a decent price for a trailer that meets all their needs.

We recently had a BYB litter advertised on our work bulletin board. No health testing and the breeder wanted the same amount of money for pups that my friend (registered breeder) charges. BYB dogs arent' always bargains - in many ways.
-
Your friend may find this thread helpful. My friend charges $1200 for a limited register pup from fully health tested parents. Pups are checked for dermoid sinus.

Ideas For A Seriously Bored Dog On Crate Rest?

Talk to your vet about sedation. If she's really not coping, it can be one method of managing her. -
It's beautiful!

I had the best coffee splurk moment in an email I received from our IT support folk at work. It apologised for the delay in responding to a request and for any incontinence caused.

I thought the behaviour towards the Beagle bordered on predatory at times (although they clearly didn't mean business) and the behaviour towards the person with the stick was anything but friendly. As the owner of the pitbulls the question of why the dogs were shot is pretty obvious - they weren't in your yard and were harassing a dog in someone elses. All the indignation at the shooting doesn't change the fact that the dogs should never have been there. Blame the owner if you want to blame anyone. -
Souffy if you were looking for an example of what's possible once a procedure is banned, look no further than what's been achieved with the ears of the Boston Terrier in countries where they aren't cropped. You're right, selecting for correct tail carriage and shape won't happen overnight. I'm thankful that the Poodle breed standard (all three sizes) only ever specified PREFERABLY docked and that a description of the tail and carriage was included in the breed standard. Hopefully, breed fanciers of other docked breeds will make their decisions about that and breeds can move forward accordingly. One thing is for sure, there is no going back.

If you're responding to calls a dog "is attacking" and you have no training or knowledge of dogs, how do you make such a call? Simple solution - don't send police in response to such calls - send people with training. -
Yep. Hunger! I agree with other posters. Drop her to two meals a day, stop softening the food and add some raw chicken necks or wings to her diet. Allowing a dog to become a fussy eater is making a huge rod for your back. One possible issue is that she may be teething though - is she starting to grow or lose teeth?
