Would It Be Considered Rude
poodlefan replied to indi_dog's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
As long as the two clubs' training methods are compatible, I can't see why it would be a problem. They shouldn't be like cults. -
How Do I Get Puppy To Stop Jumping On Everyone?
poodlefan replied to SteveMachine's topic in Puppy Chat
The best way to stop the jumping is to teach him a better alternative - sitting. He' just a baby so don't expect him to be perfect for a while yet. In the interim, let him greet new people on lead - that way YOU have control. -
I feel your pride - well done and congratulations for persevering - a lot of people don't. It took me 9 months to get Lily over the full height A-Frame - now it's one of her favourite obstacles.

I would hesitate to recommend any aversive head collar for what simply be play behaviour that is not related to a constant pulling issue. I don't recommend headcollars period actually. he internet is not the place to be getting help for this one. Go to a decent dog trainer or school and have the issue looked.

Is the dog allowed inside? What does your friend consider to be "well stimulated and socialised"? What does that involve.
-
That it shouldnt be done before exhausting other options like increasing the pup's mental and physical stimulation. Bark collars aren't wildly effective on many dogs and deter behaviour, rather than preventing it. What is the pup's story?

Not really from what I've read of it. It containes digestive enzymes and aims to improve digestion, rather than offer nutritional supplementation. I've heard that dogs that suffer from pancreatitis benefit from this product.
-
I can't help on that one I'm afraid.. I've always fed some kind of nutritional supplement so I haven't had a change to notice improvements.

Roo: Glad to hear it Roo. I'd like to say that was the case around here.
-
Roo: Sorry to rain on this idyllic scene but the owner of every single one of these dogs is breaking the law. Dogs must either be contained on your premises or onlead unless in a designated offlead area. The same laws apply regardless of the owners occupation I'm afraid. I'm afraid I have little tolerance for people who think their dogs don't have to be restricted like the rest of ours. This is precisely the kind of disregard that leads to more and more restrictions on dog ownership. I had my wrist broken some years ago when two tradies dogs jumped off a ute had some biffo with a dog I was walking onlead. I got spilt in the ensuing melee and broke my scaphoid. I'm sure those dogs enjoyed it immensely too. I also don't enjoy playing dodgems with offlead dogs in my car, no matter how well behaved they are.

I'd say a puppy pen is 3-4 times larger than a crate. You can buy them online from Petnetwork or CCrates or from the retail vans at dog shows. I'm not saying this pup shouldn't be at work with your OH but if he IS there he needs appropriate containment AND a routine that he can adjust to. OH needs to pen him when he isn't having a pee or play break. Maybe a pee break every half hour (he's only a baby) and a play every hour now working up to pee/play every 2.5 hours or so ie morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea. Pups do pee in their pens but these are usually put out on grass for the pups to stay in.

Because he will have a load more fun at work with his master. Yep, it's a heap of fun for a pup to be being crated or tethered all day.
-
If he can't be constantly supervised on it, I don't think it's a good idea. What if he strings himself up? He could be dead in minutes. Why can't he stay at home?

http://www.petnetwork.com.au/ Their warehouse is off Whitehorse Road in Mitcham. You can go there and buy stuff directly from them. They have a very good range of toys.
-
I think for new pups we need: The patience of a saint; The wisdom of Solomon; and The riches of Midas. A very basic training plan is a good idea - check out good places for puppy school and ongoing training. A vet recommendation is also very handy.

I was using it until it became unavailable here. I now use Greenpet - the nutritional supplement and the joint forumla.

Dogs 'burning Out' In Training
poodlefan replied to leopuppy04's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Vickie: I couldn't agree more. I agree with all your points Vickie. Horse people know the importance of spelling an animal from competiton and training. That's a foreign concept to a lot of dog people. -
Dogs 'burning Out' In Training
poodlefan replied to leopuppy04's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Leo to me it's not starting too young that's the issue (you should start training the day puppy comes home) but putting too many demands and too much pressure to "perform" too young. You see dogs being treated a bit like some kids.. . the equivalent of using "flash cards" and "brain gyms". It takes time for the brain and body to develop in both children and dogs. Too much pressure and stress too young is not good. The key I suppose is knowing how much and when a puppy can learn what you want to teach it. That's a combination of experience and reading the dog in front of you. I also think that having a good training instructor/mentor can keep your expectations grounded in reality. After all, most of the training issues dogs have come from the handler. Often it's the handler who has to reflect on why the dog is not "getting it" rather than blaming the dog - an all too common reaction to training challenges I'm afraid. -
How Do You Get Into Dog Sports?
poodlefan replied to Zelahi's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Yeah, I know... just didn't want to see the thread deleted after a big NSW v VIC slanging match! ;) As a former resident of both states and a current resident of the ACT, I can only say that I prefer VIC to NSW.. better weather, holidays etc... but no doubt others would beg to differ. VIC has some excellent agility competitors but it's only recently that they've started to be included on the visiting O/S trainers seminar circuit. Personally I think you learn more at a good seminar than you will in months of ordinary training/competition. -

In obedience Dude, I totally agree that NSW lags behind Vic. I'd argue the reverse for agility. ;) -

Dogdude: Come up to ACT/NSW for a visit Dogdude - I'll be happy to point some out. You'd probably be surprised at who owns them... multiple State obedience title winner. -

There are also people whose dogs are either "working" or in a run.. They argue it encourages focus and enthusiasm. I argue it's the canine equivalent of Stockholm syndrome. There's a lot of hooey about what makes a top competition obedience dog. I suppose it comes down to the differences between why people get dogs in the first place. Some want a dog for the job, others want a pet that can also do dogsports, others just like to try to see what they can do with the dog they have. -

Some of the worst mannered dogs I know are top obedience winners ;) Competition obedience and an obedient dog are totally different things. You are so right Janba... I can think of a few UD titled dogs who only recall in the obedience ring. ;) -

Dogdude: Some people simply do it for enjoyment Dogdude. You see more of that in agility I think.. fully titled dogs run by people who simply love the sport ( and watching their dogs have a good time).
