If this has been going on for more than 24 hours, take him to the vet. It might be nothing more serious than clipper rash but you never know. Better safe than sorry. Is there any obvious nick or inflammation?

Why would you be shocked? There are breeds that were originally developed to fight other dogs and breeds originally developed to defend livestock from wolves. It's a bit of a no brainer IMO that you'd see a higher incidence of dog aggression from such breeds. Then you can add dogs with very high prey drive that may transfer that drive onto small dogs. BSL has nothing to do with dog aggression. It was about protecting people. Its a crock of shite anyway. It's not prejudice to be wary of some breeds until you know the individual dog. It IS prejudice to think all dogs of some breeds will have issues with others. It is also prejudice (not to mention rather dangerous) to conclude all dogs of other breeds WON'T have issues with others.

Oh yay.. more sensationalist fodder for PETA types to go to town on. How about someone does crossbred dogs exposed... lots of problems there too and not a single genetic health test that can help prevent them. When we see cases like Lab x Poodles PTS aged less than 2 years due to chronic HD, I'll consider the program to be a bit more balanced.

I don't think its "prejudice" to handle interactions with dogs based on common breed characteristics. I agree that some breeds need to be treated with more caution but this can depend on what your dogs are. I also agree that some owners can create challenges for other owners no matter what breed of dog they've got.

I've never had a "fight for dominance" amongst my dogs. Sure they have had conflicts from time to time but never a mark on anyone and all quickly stopped. My advice? Don't fret over what might never happen. Observe your dogs and manage them based on what you see, not what someone told you might happen.

What makes the colour in the tear stains is bacteria (yeast) growing on the skin.

What are his teeth like?

Stress will make skin flake. Give her a bath in decent shampoo, rinse thoroughly and make sure you feed a balanced diet.

Head down to Bunnings and have a look at some of the soft tool bags.. there are some good reasonably priced options.

What Shampoo Is Best For An Itchy Dog?
poodlefan replied to PuddleDuck's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
This. You need to know why the dog is itchy before applying a topical solution.. and sometimes there won't be one. I like Groomers EPO for doing an effective job while keeping the skin in great condition. As another poster said, its great for your hands too. -
I'd like to know what the checks will be. Without a microchip link to a petshop, how will they know??

Lots of folk feed Royal Canin. I'm one of them. No reason why you shouldn't try Black hawk but nothing wrong with what you're feeding now IMO.
-
I'd hope for nothing less from Whippets. Other breeds I'd not try it. So much depends on the breed and the individual dog.

I thought that as well but at the end of the segment a man from an assistance dog organisation came on and was pleading for them to get it back so maybe it is genuine. I tried to find a link to the story but lucked out Either way, I hope they get the dog back safe and quickly

I wonder whether its an accredited assistance dog or yet another person making the claim about a pet.

Ldhome Must Have Too Much Money To Spend!
poodlefan replied to Lindainfa's topic in General Dog Discussion
It's possible having a part time OH&S officer would be cheaper than paying claim after claim. God forbid a shelter looked after its workers. -
If you're even thinking about getting a solicitor involved, go and buy the most expensive replacement gazebo you can find. It will be cheaper. Small claims court (self represented) or don't bother. Put it down to shit happens and move on.

Feeling Disheartened About Puppy School Experience
poodlefan replied to Magstar's topic in Puppy Chat
Sorry, but most off leash parks really aren't suitable for baby puppies. You can't control the other dogs and anything can happen. -
Anyone who buys a working GSD better be sure that they're up for all of the training, exercise and management that entails. Can they make good pets? Yep. But a significant number also find their way to the police and military as young dogs when people find they've bitten off more than they can chew.

Want some more honest advice? Try it for yourself before you let a few people ruin it before you start. I don't know what breed you have but if you posted that you were going to enter a particular show in the showing forum I bet there'd probably be someone from your group that would help out. Have a couple of lessons if you can, get a show lead and away you go. No one's every died doing it that I know of and there are a lot of ordinary, sane people out there at weekends who enjoy themselves win lose or draw and will be a great source of friendship and advice. Breeding dogs is no cakewalk whether you show or not. I really do suggest you test the water of the show world before giving it up based on the biased views of a handful of people who have their own particular baggage or axes to grind. I can tell you that through showing I have met people who would get out of bed and break the landspeed record to my house in the middle of the night to help with a whelping. You won't tend to meet them anywhere else but showing.,

Plenty of people with pedigree dogs have back end titles or no interest in breeding. Most breed clubs organise one thing - shows. Boring or not, if you view showing as serving an apprenticeship it can get the results the OP is looking for... to become a known quanity, not a "fly by nighter" and to become someone that people will trust with a decent Main Register bitch. Right now she has no runs on the board with the dog she has. At 10 months old, some obedience dogs are getting their first passes/titles. So without those runs.. what else can he/she do.. jump in the pond with the rest of us. No one said you have to do it forever. And who knows, maybe the OP will enjoy it. Some of us enjoy a weekened out looking at all kinds of dogs and sharing time with fellow dog tragics, even when we don't win. ;) The OP needs a profile in her breed of choice. Unless she involves herself in a breed specific dog sport, I have no idea how else he/she will achieve it outside the show ring.

I'm sniffing around getting my second Whippet pup. Because I showed my first, I've got a heap of contacts and Whippety FB friends.. will make it a lot easier (but not necessarily quicker) to find the next one!

If you want to feed your puppy milk, just use normal human milk.. nothing wrong with it. Or you can use lactose free human milk if normal milk upsets his tummy.. its a fraction of the cost of "puppy milk". They don't need it for calcium though if you are feeding a decent quality kibble and/or raw meaty bones. My dogs like goats milk.. they're a teeny bit spoiled.

Want my honest advice? Show your male. Not only will you get to see him in comparison to other males and potentially title him, you'll soon become a known quantity to other breeder/exhibitors. Whilst showing might not interest you, it will be a means to an end. Networking really matters. If there's a national for your breed, go to that too.. it demonstrates commitment to the breed IMO. Plus you'll get to see what else is out there and maybe you'll find the mentor you need to help you along in your early days of becoming a breeder.
