Another vote for hormone level testing here. A dog urinating on its bedding needs all possible medical causes eliminated.

Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis Disease (hge)
poodlefan replied to britt3's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
So sorry to hear that Beauie. My vet told me that HGE is triggered by a range of possible assaults on the immune system. The trigger can be a toxin, a bacteria or a virus. Not much help really. -
Given that more dog attacks occur because the dog has no social bond with its owners, its an interesting observation to make. Dog attacks are not caused by whether or not a dog is allowed inside. Indeed, there are arguments that would tend to suggest that inside is better than isolated from family. If you wanted me to speculate about what happened, I'd lay odds there's been a conflict and the dog has weighed in on the side of the person its most bonded to. Facts are none of us know the circumstances of this attack. Speculation is pointless.

Help! My Dog Has Peed On People....
poodlefan replied to monique.c's topic in General Dog Discussion
Whippet and oldest boy poodle? Twice within the first few hundred metres.. they have a poo too. Youngest poodle boy does nothing. He's happy to toilet on lead at road stops etc though. Poodle girl.. once on a walk. If I let them sniff and scratch.. all will mark a good spot. Girl included! -
Amen to that. No point giving Benedryl to a dog with tick poisoning or a punctured soft palate. Take the dog to the vet.

Help Needed With Grooming A Maltese/shitzu
poodlefan replied to Gamby's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Dirt, coats, collars - all will make a fine coat mat. I'd be opting for more frequent washing and conditioning AND shortening the coat. No point in leaving it long if its a pain for both you and her to maintain. I'd be off to the groomers for a 4# blade on her body. -
Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis Disease (hge)
poodlefan replied to britt3's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My poodle Darcy has had two bouts of HGE. Both required hospitalisation. Did the vet do a PCV (packed cell volume) blood test? If not, find a new vet IMO. The biggest killer in HGE is chronic dehydration.. organ shutdown is what kills within 24 hours Intravenous fluids are usually the first response. Had she been my dog, I'd have left her in the vets overnight on a drip. I would have her on a very bland diet for the next week. If it happens again (and I hope it doesn't) get them to check her potassium levels - depleted potassium is one symptom of HGE. -
I can't comment on anything other than at 11 months, this dog is too young to be jumping higher than its pasterns.

I'd call that a training issue. You solved it in one way but there are others. -
Help! My Dog Has Peed On People....

I don't let my dogs tow me from tree to tree but if they have to squat or cock a leg early on, I let them in a suitable space. Once we're going we walk briskly. -

And how on earth do you toilet a dog on a long trip if it won't pee on lead? My dogs are taken out of the car to a suitable spot. They pee, we get back in the car and off we go. -

Maybe you yelling "No pee!" at him all the time and then tieing him up so he can see all the fun but can't participate? If he pees anyway after you say "No pee", then he doesn't understand the cue. Time outs are a wishy washy punishment at the best of times. I don't know how a dog is supposed to gather from a time out that peeing is not on. If your dog doesn't know how to stop a punishment he will get stressed. Any animal will. The general rule of thumb in behaviour is if a dead dog can do it then it's not a behaviour. Can a dead dog "no pee"? What is he supposed to do instead? I'm with Corvus.. "NO" means nothing to a dog. You'd be way better off to stop stressing about your dog peeing when out and about (its what dogs do) unless he's pulling on leash or doing it on people. Training will fix the first thing and a supervision and a good recall the second. Tell him what you want him to do and reward him.. it can't be any less effective than what you're doing now. Seriously, what's the issue with dogs peeing on a walk?? My dogs poo too. I pick up the poo and don't let them pee on folks lawns.. other than that, who cares? Have you got any idea how uncomfortable it is to walk when you need to go? -
Oh No. So sorry to read this. RIP Mozart I hope Zamba continues to cope OK

I agree. Its like one of those "seconds from disaster" countdowns.. I'd believe the 40 stitches. A couple of good bites can do a good job of scalping a youngster

Glad it worked out for you and Harper. Keep up the training. Poodles are bright dogs and need an outlet for their intelligence. -
My understanding is it's not legal to sell it raw here. Ziwipeak do a canned version.

How I read the current protocols is: Puppy jabs Booster after one year Every three years after that.

Ridgebacks are lovely dogs.. one of the largely undiscovered gems in "big family dogs" IMO along with Pointers. I'm sure your new puppy will bring you a lot of joy.

A couple of us have mentioned that we "saw" our pets after they went to God. Watch out the corner of your eye Sunnyflower.. he may still be there with you for a little while. I know it's not what you were thinking but I honestly think another Cavalier would be the best healing you could have.. perhaps another colour.

Thanks PF - I hadn't even thought of that! I have some black flats I can use (now I think about it, most of the shoes in my wardrobe are bright colours!) You can always buy bright pants to match your shoes.

I have seen plenty of small chi/terrier mixes with patella issues and oblivious owners. They don't necessarily stop a dog from living a long and healthy life but I'd prefer a pup without them. I've even been told that 'skipping' is normal for such dogs.

Generally a "carrier" for a disease like PRA will not be affected by it. For example a poodle tested as a carrier for PRA is not going to go blind from it. Can you be a bit more specific about the breed and your health concerns for it? If you've changed your mind and ring the breeder, you should be entitled to a deposit back. At least this breeder IS health testing. Edited to clarify - is this a pet or a potential breeding dog?
