How To Stop Dogs Running Off
poodlefan replied to whitka's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
How old is he Whitka? How would you describe his personality generally. I've seen dogs do it because they're distracted, chasing animals, very stressed and downright disobedient. Some are basically giving their handlers the finger. -
Discovered at Wagga Uni the fact that Rasberry cordial/rasberry juice kills a range of gastro "bugs".........it is the most common form of treatment in "Bali Belli" too :D It has to be a minimum of 25% rasberry juice though. Not many fit the bill but Golden Circle rasberry does. Pig farmers and sick calf owners and the military have been using it for years for gastro complaints.

I would normally fast or feed something pretty bland and keep liquids up. Beef gives one of my dogs the trots. He can tolerate it in a veggie mix but not straight.
-
Dogs who do this seem to benefit from two meals a day or a small snack to supplement the main mail. You could try that.

Here is a listing of Victorian holistic vets. I live in the ACT so don't know anything about any of these folk.
-
I would recommend you try a wheat free diet for a while. Wheat is a very common allergen in dogs. A trip to a holistic vet might be a good investment. You need to nail the cause of the skin issue for effective treatment.

Some vets will desex that early and some breeders will. I think it's fine for rescues, but nothing would ever convince me to purchase a puppy that was desexed at 8 weeks as I believe it is not in the best interests of the health of the puppy at ALL. Ditto. However from the breeder's perspective, it sure beats the worry of your dog ending up in a puppy farm.

Walking Question - Where To Start?
poodlefan replied to Adele's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I think you'll find it easier to have the pup focus on you than to have it sit calming. I walk past quite a few people who try the sit and be calm approach with their dogs - never seen it work yet. The aim seems to be to make a passing dog no big deal but changing YOUR behaviour or the dog's behaviour when a dog approaches seems to run contrary to that. Teaching your pup a "look" or "watch me" command or to a look at you when you call their name can be very handy in these situations. You can use a motivator to reinforce this at first. -
Yes, I would rather have a tough one than a shy retiring timid one any day, as you said I just have to find her "on" button thanks pebbles. I have tried roast chicken, roast lamb as well as dried liver, dried lamb as bait-she is very ho-hum, but maybe she needs to be quite hungry first. Maybe she simply doesn't have much of a food drive..

My bad, I breed em tough Cant fool you PF Rory is more stubborn than mine here, but i guess I have trained mine at a young age so thats helped. She is a very independant bitch which is very head strong. She can be taught, I wore her down before she wore me down As I said Riv, if you think she needs the vet again do it for your own piece of mind, but when she done it to me its because she was determined to get her own way. Frankly Sivvy, I'd rather a tough outgoing mini than a softer type.. you need that resiliance for dog sports and the show ring. I've got one of these (thanks JAG).. you push him and he'll push back. What JAG also bred into him was a very high desire to play and strong prey drive. Make something a game and he'll be into it. Rivkeh, does she like balls? One approach that might work is to teach her that doing what you want gets her what she wants - a reward. For Darce, doing anything with a ball throw at the end produces cooperation and enthusisam. Try bouncing a ball around her... gait her for a bit, release and throw the ball. Let us know if that makes a difference. For stacking.. have the ball. Into position for a very short time.. release and throw the ball (once she's off the table of course). What you should be able to build in her is lots of enthusisam and sparkle for the release.. and cooperation until she IS released. If she'll stack and chase then you put the two together and do stack, gait release and chase the ball. Then you put the ball on random reward.. sometimes she gets it afterwards, sometimes she doesn't. There's usually a spot at a show you can bounce the ball after the ring.. out the back somewhere. Darce will do anything for a ball.. wish I'd pinged to that earlier.

I understand..that's how I did it. What Sivvy seems to be saying is that the cause of the problem is one of your relationship with her (she's a tough cookie) rather than anything else. Is that right Siv? Do you think she understands when you want her to focus on you and work for you? If not, this may be one area you could work on. The only other thing I can think on is to seriously jackpot her (perhaps with a game or toy rather than food) for doing what you want. Will she stack at all? If you can get it even for 1 second... then end the exercise and reward. Have you put either the stacking or gaiting on cue?
-
in stacking? Yep, stacking?
-
How do you hold her head Rivkeh?
-
So you need to tick the WIFM box with this one. Do you use your voice to encourage her to trot with you?
-
with no pressure--for me she pulls sideways-crabs? and pulls head down. Changing pace she quickens doing the same thing What happens with no lead?
-
she is very blase with treats---this girl follows me everywhere, she gets LOADS of attention from me loves being handled, picked up cuddled smooched So what's different about gaiting and stacking.. are you nervous?
-
Have you videoed gaiting her? Sivvy's seen her, I haven't so I'm just speculating. Does changing your pace change anything.. faster, slower? What happens if you don't put any pressure on the lead?
-
Cause she is naughty. If more a baaah then a growl when she starts to pull, and when she stacks she wants to do what she wants to do and resists you holding onto her. And she's not interested in treats? This is a dog I'd be doing a lot of handling with.. massage etc. Can/will she free stack if lured into position?
-
I'll start where I always start with training issues: first eliminate any physical cause. Take her to a good dog chiro or a veterinary chiro and have her thoroughly checked out. It may be that it's uncomfortable to hold her head up in the way you want. You shouldn't be having to string her up to get her to gait well. It might also be worth having a vet look at her palate and throat. Why are you growling at her when you stack her? This may sound crazy but obedience people do it.. teach her to gait at your side WITHOUT the lead.. once she understands what you want, put the lead back on. Plenty of people teach their dogs to heel then add the lead afterwards. If treats aren't going it for her, will she work for a toy? You'd probably get more responses to this in the training forum.

Anita: Can I chuck all the small dog halti's on your bonfire Anita?
-
They do tend to teach a dog to pull IMO. The dog HAS to pull to extend them. They should absolutely NEVER be used in combination with any kind of halti but often are.
-
Yep, the very originally named "puppy clip". See below. No top knot band on the absolute babies but you put it up as soon as it wont' stay out of their eyes. Hair length will dictate when you go into junior lion. I can't remember when Darce went it but I think it was about 10 months? Hopefully a more experienced showie will tell you.
-
Not sure about how long it would last but Deals Direct have this Price is worth trying I'd also suggest you add a wobble board (piece of board with a rubber ball under or PVC tubing) to the play pen.
-
It's very good. Would be great for someone doing a lot of training on their own I reckon. Are you getting the electronic or paper version - both are available by subscription.
-
Could be coincidence. How old was she when she was desexed?
