  1. According to the helpful Dolers she is most likely Papillon x shitzu or terrier Rescuers vet and pound had her down as Skye Terrier. She was with a rescuer/foster carer along with a few other dogs. One of them had kennel cough. She's not bringing any mucus up just making the noise. Oh, now I remember this girl. My new vow to be more positive in my posting style will limit what I will say of the ethics of rehoming a dog from a home where KC is active. Is she vaccinated against KC? I'd be keeping a close eye on it. If she sounds like a heavy smoker in the morning (a real "gak" throat clearing sort of sound), I'd suggest a vet visit. I'd be sending a copy of the bill to the rescue. In the meantime, I'd not expose her to new dogs in any public places or other peoples homes for the next 14 days. There are some nasty cough bugs around at the moment and they are highly infectious.
  2. What breed or crossbreed is she? I'm not sure I quite followed the bit about the KC. Are you saying that she's just come to you from a home where a dog has KC at the moment? Dogs with KC can do a lot of gagging and retching.. it's the mucus.
  3. Good luck! I'd rather show a dog out of coat than leave a trail of hair behind me in the ring.
  4. Wind? If it's coming out it's coming out.. and better outside the ring than in the judge's hands I reckon.
  5. I think Flynnie won't be growing out of squeaking with excitement when we drive to the forest to walk.. he's had plenty of years to practice it. At least it's only that drive though. Generally you don't know he's in the car until you look in your rear view mirror and see four Vizsla legs in the air.
  6. [officially out of depth] If you change the title of this thread to Stripping Advice for Collie Rough, you should draw in the right folk. I was thinking of an undercoat rake but basically I have no idea.. not very helpful I'm afraid.
  7. What breed is he..that will help us get an idea of what sort of coat you're dealing with.
  8. So yelling SHAAAAAADUP isn't recommended then Erny? [takes notes for next time she babysits Flynnie the Wonder Dog]
  9. Aquatic: Nonetheless, there are Malamutes competing in agility who are reliable offleash. It's not impossible to achieve it.
  10. If you are interested in agility, you need to get him out, working and focussed on you in the presence of other dogs. Club based training would be one way to accomplish that. If he can't learn to focus on you and ignore other dogs, you'll get nowhere with agility where all training is conducted off lead. If you want to do agility, resist your breeder and keep him LEAN. A lean puppy is going to stress his joints less and that will make for a sounder adult dog. If you can't feel his ribs with the flat of your hand, without pressure, he is carrying too much weight. And yes, I mean spending time in his crate doing nothing.. and giving you and your other dog a break.
  11. Can someone let me know what this means? If I enter one dog in novice jumping Sat am and Sat PM, do I put in two forms or one form? (I guess I dont know what is meant by 'class' here) Two. One form for each run you do.
  12. Aquatic: Yep. Crate training and obedience training would be a good start. Nekbet: Missed that.. very stressful on a developing spine also. No weave poles until he's at least 12 months old.
  13. Aquatic: No, not by any classification that I've read. I think this boy needs training, obedience training, and BOUNDARIES. Engage that brain, teach him some self control and don't let him play roughly with your older dog. Sounds a little to me like he thinks he's in charge Acquatic.. time to turn that on his head.
  14. Daily brushing and a good diet are the foundations for glowing coat. Then you can cheat. Add a squirt of coat oil or baby oil to a bucket of warm water, pour it over a washed and rinsed dog and squeeze it through with your hands. Don't wash out. Wait for dog to dry and add sunglasses. You'll need them.. your dog will sparkle.
  15. I use Drontal but my dogs won't touch the chewies.. it's tablets here.
  16. It's been through here.. the cough dogs developed here was nowhere near that real gag/retch/vomit mucus one that serious KC produces. Thank God.
  17. Other than not leaving her with food to bury, not really. It's just her way of storing things she values. One of my dogs does it too and he's had a happy upbringing. Just canine storage techniques in action. We use drawers, they bury stuff.
  18. There is a non-KC virus doing the rounds at the moment. It's not as bad as KC but it's still a pain in the arse.
  19. LukeW: Sometimes you have no choice about that. I'd suggest it read, "don't only call your dog when you need to put on his lead". You see that played out a bit in offlead areas.. dog won't come because he knows it means "playtime over".
  20. I like to take all my dogs with me when I can but I do like to give each dog a bit of one on one time regularly. Training at my dog club is one of those times.
  21. I'd strongly recommend you rethink the "we all do everything together" vow. What's going to happen down the track when Nikki passes on and Darmah has never spent a moment without her? You're building a potential problem there. Take Darmah to preschool on her own. It will do her good, Nikki wouldn't be allowed anyway and think about doing some things with each dog alone on a regular basis. If you want Darmah to bond to you, and not just Nikki, you're going to have to separate them at times. I expect Nikki will also appreciate a regular break from the attentions of a 12 week old puppy..
  22. Thanks! IMO his diet is not the issue - having a dog with ongoing skin issues, I am aware of his triggers and the need for supplements etc and he does get enough Omega 3, 6 & 9's plus raw food etc. I know diet can play a huge part but my girl, who is on the exact same diet has not got the same problems. Yep he has been clipped - at least twice and both times I specifically requested them NOT to clip him. I was not impressed and TBH I believe that it was after the 2nd clip that his coat really deteriorated. Diet can be a very individual thing.. dogs don't have the same allergies. Does his diet currently contain gluten? If it does, I'd suggest ditching it. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions so far - much appreciated. I think the clipping is at the root of the problem.. I suggest you consider investing in a Coat King to strip out some of the hair.. it should make the coat lie much flatter. Any reason why you can't groom him yourself? Sure beats groomers buggering up your dog's coat. Dogs don't necessarily all do well on the same diet. He may have food sensitivities that your girl doesn't have. If there is any gluten in his diet, I'd be suggesting you eliminate it to see if that makes any difference.
