Chicken giblets stew up nicely. When Darce was recovering from Haemoraghic Gastro and had to have cooked food, I added giblets to his "Doogy stew". I lost count of the number of my friends who'd lift the lid on the pot and want to try it. I was nice though and told them what was in it.. they lost interest in trying it pretty rapidly - go figure.

I use mainly roast chicken but also devon and cheese.. if you make the treats really small, they don't get that much of it.

Not this people. :D me either! I'm not looking forward to even touching the stuff Wait till you stick it in a blender. I had to buy another blender for that.. no way would I make smoothies in a blender that's made LIVER smoothies.

Fat Fat Fat Help To Get Weight Off A Giant Dog
poodlefan replied to Caesars mum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I would halve their meals.. literally. There is no reason why a dog can't lose weight fast. Any reason you feed them twice a day? Once a day is fine. -
Dogon: I would install this ASAP. An 8 week old pup can be trained to use a doggy door - a 10 week old one for sure. If you tie the flap up, you should be able to toilet train him to go outside pretty much as soon as you get him and certainly while you are on leave. You can work on mastering the flap as you go along. Once he's got that weighed off, I'd be looking at giving him inside/outside access as soon as possible. If you don't want him toileting in the house, the sooner you train him to go outside, the better.

Covered water bowls like the K9 Cruiser are every water digging dog owners best friend - very handy for the car also. I can attest to the fact that only a bit of water comes out when you knock them over.

I would strongly recommend you now supplement your girl with Vitamin C up to bowel tolerance - very useful for detoxing after a envenomation. There are more threads on here about that.

2 Of Our Pups Got Bitten By A Snake Today.
poodlefan replied to jeddica's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
And if the vet said they might pull through? What then? Would you give them the chance, or pts? If my dog was paralysed and in obvious distress Jed, I'd ask the vet to ease them out.. Maybe its because mine are small and I've never heard of a dog that's recovered from such a bite without AV. In my dogs case, they probably wouldn't make it to the vet. We had an incident here some years back when a lady's three Mini Schnauzers took on a brown snake at local dog club. All three were dead within 20 minutes. -
2 Of Our Pups Got Bitten By A Snake Today.
poodlefan replied to jeddica's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Symptoms of snake bite: Nothing about what's written above would allow me to let my dogs die of snake bite when I could have them PTS. If you can't afford anti-venom, cough up for some green dream I reckon or put a bullet in them if you must. No animal should die in distress when we have the capacity to stop the suffering. -
Can't say I blame them really.

Interesting Question For Any Trainer!
poodlefan replied to lovemesideways's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
In an agility context you wouldn't put the dog away - you'd stop the training when the dog was performing according to your criteria and REWARD it with a game etc. -
Koolietas: I remember reading the book and watching the movie Never Cry Wolf.. the author went up to the tundra to solve the mystery of what wolves ate when the caribou weren't there. It was rodents mainly - whole.

When People Talk About A Balanced Diet.....
poodlefan replied to ncarter's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
just wondering is the main problem with a balanced diet that people give too much muscle meat in comparison to bone? Even worse is no bone at all. I've seen some highly unbalanced diets labelled "BARF" or "raw" before. Some mince with a pasta, rice and some veggies is not balanced but does seem to be quite a common diet. A processed diet of decent brand dog food would be far superior. -
I see a couple of difficulties with very rough play: 1. Not all dogs will learn that rough play with one dog doesn't mean you play that way with all dogs. Your pup may get some very harsh receptions if that style of play becomes the norm, especially after maturity. 2. Big size differences between dogs can lead to the younger dog suffering from the interaction, especially from a chiropractic point of view. That may have long term implications. My view would be to allow some play to occur but to step in when you think its been for long enough or if its getting over the top.

Ah Midol.. as ever the voice of moderation and acceptance of different points of view. Feeding fibre in the form of fruit/veggies stops my oldest dog from becoming constipated. He can't handle a diet of straight RMBs. Feeding a fair bit of pumpkin in the veggie pulp helps prevent my girl from having impacted anal glands. It also gives me a base to which I can add offal and other supplements like eggs, oil etc. That's beneficial enough for me to continue it. A purist version of a prey model diet would be feeding animal fur, feathers etc. Without them, the diet does not have enough fibre IMO. You might also like to consider that as opportunistic carnivores, other canids, particularly smaller species, do eat fruit, berries, insects and vegetation in addition to other prey.

Better make it a 'no pull' one like a Sporn or you'll probably end up grass skiing.

Some kind of small dome tent might be the go.

If I had a dog with serious issues, I'd consider trying one of these as a management tool while I tried for behavioral change. However, I don't see a more general use for them... it is just another gadget but if it does provide a calming effect, I'd not be knocking it. ETA: I really don't think this stuff should be available from anywhere other than behaviourists. If it does the same job as a drug, then I'd view it as a better alternative than that.

There are skin folds on the poodles but they are not excessive. Clippering up the throat with the neck extended (nose pointed to ceiling) stretches them flat. However I use a finer blade (15# on my white girl and 30# on the black boys) Avoiding cuts is a combination of technique and good equipment I reckon and practice does help.

If Money And Availability Were No Issue...
poodlefan replied to cassie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Pretty much what a few posters here have said. I'm a raw feeder but I'd up the standard to all organic and diversify the meat sources to include more game eg. rabbit, venison etc. Ted loves whole quail.. maybe for Christmas day he can have one. -
I think you need to get some training help with your pup.. she's only going to get stronger and now is the time to fix it. I'd recommend you join a decent training club or get a good professional to come to your home.
