Can You Train A Dog To Lie?
poodlefan replied to Shakti's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I've seen some pretty serious displays of "aggression" from dogs who were playing. I honestly think they build on that. I can get one of my dogs to growl in play and display teeth. I can make one of FHRPs do it to me too. He's quite impressive. All I have to do is become a "scary monster" and away he goes. Barking, teeth and growling is really all that's required. Ditto "attacks".. they can be trained and some dogs think going the sleeve is a big game. There have been some good shows on Animal Planet about training movie animals. -

Is This Normal For A 6m Old Staffordshire Bull Terrier
poodlefan replied to NJSTAFFY?????'s topic in Puppy Chat
At six months, he should have done most of his growing... but larger breeds grow for longer. At a rough guess, may be another inch or two??? His breed make up will play a part there. -

YEP I DID AND CHASING UP THE BREEDER A BULLMASTIFF IS A BIG DOG THE BREEDER SOLD THEM AS ENGLISH STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIERS SO IM NOT TO HAPPY WHEN HE WAS LITTLE HE LOOKED LIKE A STAFFY. I GUESS I JUST GOT SUCKED IN BY A BREEDER I don't think this is the kind of "breeder" most DOLers relate to. No such breed as an "English SBT" .. I think you were had. I don't think SBTs come in fawn with black masks anyway do they? Enjoy him for the lovely dog he is but remember next time you want to buy a pup that only an ANKC registered pup that comes with a registered pedigree can be guaranteed to be purebred. -
How does he know when he's doing the right thing if you are doing all the change of position? I'd be inclined to stop and reward a loose lead than haul in back into position. Are you free walking or do you actually want him to "heel". If that's the case, the exercise needs to be taught and put on cue.

Did they check her throat for obstructions or tears? I'm with Erny.. this doesn't sound resolved to me. -
Hyperactive On Supercoat?
poodlefan replied to Pete.the.dog's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Rather than stopping them entirely, I'd suggest making them less frequent. Hard running is tough on a still maturing dog's body and you need to provide a balance of control and freedom. You can also make a visit to the park part of training. Do some work outside the gate as part of distracton training, insist on focus and control before he is unleashed and go there at quieter times to do some work in the park. Let us know if fewer visits reduce his restlessness at night! -

Gets around 45min to an hour running around with other dogs in the park every day, going through obedience school with him, doing NILIF as well as I can as well, sometimes I forget and give him a cuddle but most of the time am pretty good with it What time do you take him to the park.. in the afternoon? Yeah between 4-5, more around 4 now its getting dark earlie One possibility is that he is getting so aroused by play at the dog park that his adrenalin levels are remaining elevated overnight.. It takes hours or even days for these to drop. How aroused does he get? You could try an experiment and take him for a long quiet walk and see if that makes a difference overnight. -

How much exercise is he getting? Do you do any training with him? -
Nekbet: I don't think the OP should try this before getting one on one professional help. If she is scared of the dog at times NOW, one good bite could really create problems. Unless you are really committed and know what you're doing, I think a bite could happen. Get a qualified professional in and in the meantime, act to PREVENT bites. Its way easier and far less dangerous.

I think your guests also need to know that putting your face close to a dog's face is a very dominant/threatening behaviour from a stranger. I suggest you keep her on lead and get her to sit for a pat and allow her time to get to know people before they get anywhere close to her face with theirs. If they wouldn't do this to a large breed, adult dog, they shouldn't do it to your pup. I still recommend some dog training for your pup. It will will help develop bonds of trust and respect between you.

I hope she's feeling better this morning. She's in the best possible place right now. to you - it's so worrying when they are unwell. -

poodlefan replied to NJSTAFFY?????'s topic in Puppy Chat
To answer your question: No, its not normal for a registered, purebred Staffordshire Bull Terrier to be inches and kilos outside the adult breed standard as a pup. A highly experienced SBT breeder doesn't think your dog is purebred. I think PPS just might know what she's talking about too. Have a good look at his muzzle, Tysons muzzle and then read the breed standard. Staffies are meant to have tight lips. Tyson did. Your dog has quite a bit of flew. If you're wondering why people are saying possible Boxer or Bullmastiff, along with being larger dogs, compare your pups muzzle to those two breeds. Same shape there. If mum was a purebred SBT, there's some other bull breed or cross in the mix IMO.. possibly American or Aussie Bulldog ?? (not that these are recognised breeds). Just out of interest, was he teething when those photos were taken? What do you feed him? -
I would fast the dog for 24 hours and if the problem continues, take her to the vet. Adding food to a upset gut doesnt' help. If this is a pup we're talking about, I'd be going to the vet today. Dehydration can really knock them around.
-
My thoughts also.. that's definitely one to check with the vet about.

Agree with the other posters. You need professional help and now. Don't call Bark Busters.. go with someone recommended here. Dachshunds are terriers... quick to react, quick to chase and not renowned for their tolerance of children. In addition to getting profesisonal help you need to ensure that Justin is never put in a position where he needs to defend himself from your grandson. He should be supervised or separated from him.. always.

Is there always newspaper in her crate? Was she toilet trained on newspaper by her breeder? I'd remove all bedding from the crate while its in the car. 2 weeks isn't really long enough to establish toilet training. When you say she won't take herself out, how does she do that - through a dog door?
-
Sounds like Pete didn't want to go outside. He growled.. he didn't bite. However Persephone's ideas about walking him out and giving him a treat in his kennel are good ones. Personally, unless your boyfriend lives with you and Pete views him as part of the family, I'd suggest you take him out. Your boyfriend was not only taking him outside, but away from you.

Opinions are divided on plucking and the use of ear washes. I do pluck the poodles ears.. and they don't get ear infections. I don't use ear washes regularly.

Can We Please Use Your Hydrobath?!
poodlefan replied to Elfin's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
It didn't break the skin and I was on 'their' premises (albeit a shop). Would I still be able to report it? Do I just ring the council? What is involved? Can I use your hydrobath?! Damn right you can.. your pup was attacked! Get the number for the rangers and give them a call. A visit from a ranger might make her contain the dog for its safety and the safety of customers dogs. I don't have a hydrobath and frankly, i'd not use a public one. You don't know how often the water is changed and at least one DOLers dog got a nasty bacterial skin infection from one. A handshower fitted on a two way bath tap will do the job. -

Wipe the smug expression off the owners face and report her dog to council. Simply unforgiveable.. both the behaviour and the attitude. -
or running about in circles trying to lick it off ... or is that just my lot It will have to be especially talented to lick its own forehead though.

Oh, put medicinal grade Manuka honey on the puncture.. heals them beautifully. You pup might be a bit sticky for a while but it works.
