  1. Some of the paler coloured poodles have softer, less curly coats than the darker ones. If you want that dense, crisp, curly coat that water runs off, chances are it's a black poodle that will have it. My white toy's coat is as you describe. It gets pin knots very easily. I use a 5# blade on her body in summer and a 4# in winter. If she needs to, she wears a coat. I prefer coating to trying to keep long body hair knot free. ETA: I clip with same frequency summer and winter - every 3-4 weeks.
  2. When was the last time she had her eyes checked by a vet? It's possible she doesn't have the low light vision she used to.
  3. They have quite a few different types Rysup. My young Whippet gets the Power. The older poodles are on Seniors. I got about half a dozen sample packs so be sure to ask for all the stuff you are interested in trying.
  4. Whether or not you train at a club, I think all active obedience triallers should be members of one. It's the clubs that conduct trials and club members that do all the donkey work. They deserve support, both financial and practical. Anyone who sets foot in a trialling ring without having stewarded at that particular level does themselves no favours IMO. You won't get a better opportunity to see what's required in the ring.
  5. Where are you? Morgan Spector's book Clicker Training for Obedience is very good.
  6. Contact the distributor Rysup - they sent me some sample packs. Their website is here I get mine from Pookinuk though.. very good suppliers!
  7. So because no one else could answer, i answered myself! I called the secretary today who says that my entry is in, and my envelope should have absoloutely arrived by now, so it must have gotten lost in the mail... Boo! anyway so i have to collect it on the day. So for newbies - yes, your number should have arrived by a week before the show. Mine usually arrive on the Monday or Tuesday before a show. I've not had any a full week prior.
  8. Artemis products are gluten free. There is also a grain free (Maximal) but the very high protein is a bit of a worry for me. After years of totally raw feeding my dogs are now getting some Artemis kibble. I'm very happy with it.
  9. Have you moved the kennel to a place where he can't see the back door from it? If you have, move it back. Chances are if he cannot see where you come and go from, he wont' be using the kennel. If you live in a colder area of NSW, its highly likely he's cold.
  10. Thanks and they can eat spaghetti without any stains! Gotta love wholecolours! Only tomato based sauces though. I love the whole colours - Rubys in particular.
  11. I think its about results. How successfully a trainer can train people to train their dogs or help people overcome difficulties with them. I know folk from a range of different backgrounds - some are great and some ... aren't. Years of experience or formal learning don't guarantee a result either way IMO. You can be the best dog trainer in the world but if you want to train people, then that's a different ballgame. Sadly, that fact is not recognised by all trainers.
  12. What you view as "protection" may be no more noble than the behaviour both dogs would display over a bone. It may be resource guarding. I'd not be giving any short term foster dog the same privileges as my own. No couch privileges for the new girl.
  13. How often does your dog eat spaghetti? If it's not often, are you sure that's the culprit. It's not tear stains by chance? Posting a photo of the stain would help. Sunlight soap followed by a good whitening shampoo is usually good for stains. What club are you a member of - is it a dog training club?
  14. Absolutely restrict his access to other dogs. The virus is transmitted through airborne droplets and he should not have access to other dogs for 21 days after symptoms abate. I'd not worry about washing bedding. He's unlikey to reinfect himself and I gather the virus doesn't last long outside the body.
  15. I wonder how DCR and Justin got on?
  16. If you are entering multi-day shows, and want a catalogue for every day, you will need to order and pay for one for each day of the show. (I learned that one the hard way )
  17. He's in beautiful condition. I hope you get to the bottom of this issue soon.
  18. How old is he Kirislin? There are other causes of fitting.
  19. She's not just an idiot. She's a callous idiot.
  20. szandor: szandor, one of the best pieces of advice I can give you as a new owner of what will grow into a powerful dog is to banish the "he's only a puppy" thought from your head. Don't allow him to do anything you'd not be happy seeing in him as a full grown adult. That means no teeth on anyone ever, no pulling on the lead ever, no jumping on you or anyone else, ever. He won't simply grow out of any of these behaviours and you'll find them easier to deal with while he's small and hasn't become accustomed to getting away with them. I'd strongly recommend you do some formal training with him, starting as soon as possible and continuing right through his adolescence. Getting good manners instilled now may make the difference between you owning a dog that's a pleasure to walk and live with, or a dog that will pull like a train and be hard to handle. Don't teach him to play rough. Reward calm gentle behaviour. Let him trash his toys, not you. Now's the time to start as you mean to go on. By the way, a wagging tail doesn't necessarily mean he's happy. It can simply mean he's focussed on the game.
  21. Probably it's also due partly to the fact that they are awake for most of the day when they would normally be dozing.
  22. Jesus, they are a mess. I can see clear mats on the topline of the dog in the foreground. His coat is felted and cording. That's a clip off to the skin job, not a "groom". :D I shudder to think of what their other ends look like. What are their ears like?
  23. For a five day stay, I'd not be getting them groomed. What I would be doing is commenting to your brother and SIL on the condition/smell of their coats and telling them that you won't be volunteering to petsit them again unless they are delivered freshly washed and groomed. It's entirely possible they are unaware that their dogs need regular brushing and grooming. These crosses don't usually come with a detailed care guide. What appears to be neglect may be simple ignorance.
  24. Don't weigh my dogs or their food. I go by how they look/feel.
