Is it made of amplimesh or similar? It could be quite heavy for her to push. You can work up to a heavier door by starting light. Tie the flap up out of the way for a few days and then when she's going through confidently, add a teatowel or something light she has to push out of the way. Once she's confident with that, swap the teatowel for a piece of cardboard and so on. Has she been clobbered by the door? A lot of dogs get a fright when the follow another dog through and cop the swinging flap in the face.

Agility Equipment Looking Different To Dogs
poodlefan replied to helen's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Lily refused to jump multi coloured (each piece a different colour) broad jumps. In fact any colour but white saw her hit the brakes. She didn't get past it but I have to say the broad jump was never one of her favourite obstacles. She loved tunnels but refused point blank to enter the clear ones set up at the Vic Nationals some years back. She was never the world's most confident dog on equipment. -
It's congenital in at least some beeds MM. Location of the shunt affects operability. What breed do they have?
-
I would like to add that since I don't really have a yard, it isn't really convenient for him to run outdoors as well. Do intend to walk him daily once vaccination is completed though. No yard means your house is now his playground.. and this is an active working breed. He's too young to do any real distance walking so I'd strongly recommend you start training him and teaching him tricks ASAP. You're going to need to tire out his mind. Where did you get him from?

Agree with Missmoo. You'd probably have more luck testing a strange dog with a ball or toy rather than a tug. You also need to test nerve and conformation. The best drive in the world won't help you if the dog is unsound or not built for the task.

If she's no longer wearing it Staffords, you are one of the few. Well done. My pet peeve is seeing people walk their dogs on a halti and flexi lead.. WTF?? is that like a bungee type cable? That would kind of defeat the purpose silly people. She is almost off the halti I have it loosened quite alot now. Sometimes she is good without it sometimes not when I get into a area with lots of people the stafford friend to everyone comes out and she wants to say hello to everyone and she pulls abit :p Retractable/extendable lead.

Or you could train him NOT to pull - better for him, better for you :D Any dog can be taught that. yep agree I meant the halti as a training tool not to use forever should have been clearer oops Staffords, in over 10 years of time with my local dog club, I can think of a handful of dogs whose owners have weaned them off a halti. For most dogs, once it goes on, it's on for life. Dogs do learn to pull on them too. With a young dog, and training, there is no reason why a flat or at worst a martingale collar can't do the job.

Does Your Dog Really Need To Go Under The Knife?
poodlefan replied to Esty79's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My girl isn't that small so she would need six months to recover fully from having one leg done. No, she wouldn't. I don't know where you are getting this from. I have previously nursed for a veterinary orthopedic surgeon, six months crating is unheard of. It's fine that you have found something that has worked for you, however a lot of people come to these boards to research options for their own dogs so it's best not to exaggerate the facts. My friends dog had two weeks crate rest and 6 weeks on lead walking. -

They never die in our memories Dyzney. She's at peace now, young again in a place where bones grow on trees and all cats are fat and slow.
-
No worries. I'd not be doing too much more until he hits about 6 months. Great way to socialise him with people.
-
How much onlead walking is he doing Jaxxie - it's easy to overdo it with the youngsters.

Does Your Dog Really Need To Go Under The Knife?
poodlefan replied to Esty79's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I would pay $$$$ to avoid 6 months of crate rest. Not much of a life for a dog and not something I could accomplish with a full time job. But to each their own. I'd also be questioning what will happen as the dog ages and loses muscle condition. -
If you don't insist on no pressure on it, he will be soon enough.. it's probably still creating a bit of discomfort so he won't pull. Stand by for a change of attitude once he gets used to it. They use harnesses on sled dogs for a reason.

Probably all happened in slow motion and your heart rate went through the roof.

I hope you've taken steps to stop that happening again.. all it takes is a split second and I shudder to think what might happen if your daughter gave chase. :D

Grooming Question Regarding Dyes And Rinses For Dogs?
poodlefan replied to Partipaws's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Not sure about NZ but the application of any sort of dye to a dog is a breach of CC rules here. It is a breach of rules if: The natural colour or shade of natural colour or the natural markings of the dog have been altered or changed by the use of any substance whatsoever; I'm not saying it doesn't happen but I'd be surprised if anyone wanted to advertise the fact. :D -
Import Ban On E-collar Lifted
poodlefan replied to olegna17's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
They are legal in Qld. -
I don't like retractable leads either, but if you've ever had a strong dog take off while you're holding a rope you'll never use a rope again. A good quality tracking leash is much safer (and you can use it for tracking too). Cotton lunge lines are good too.

Quite a few vets don't do 3 vaccs anymore tdierikx. My youngest boy got two only.

Find out what is involved in the first class. Our club's first class is dog free. Handlers go and get an hour of general instruction and start with their pups the next week. If the classes are held on the same grounds as adult dogs or in a public place, I'd probably leave her at home for the first week and go without her. You'll still learn heaps.

What Aidan said. He's a puppy. And a very young one at that. He doesn't have "issues", he has the attention span of a gnat. I'd strongly recommend you book in for some training with him. In addition to getting some skills for yourself, you'll probably get a lot of reassurance that what you are seeing is perfectly normal puppy behaviour, not "issues".

I hope the sponsors of that team get some backlash. :D -
Puppy pen in backyard? How long will you be out for?
