  1. None the less, thyroid issues are noted to occur in the breed.
  2. I think there a lot of heads firmly planted in the sand on many breed health issues. While that continues to occur, shows like the BBC doco will continue to find fuel to flan their flames.
  3. OK I will ask a question if a problem is not genetic then why are breeds 'known' to suffer from certain allergies and immune/skin problems. Of course it's genetic. If a breed is prone to an issue and it occurs at a higher rate than the dog population overall, there is a genetic component whether or not the mode of inheritance has been established. No way would I be keen to breed white dogs to white dogs where there are thyroid issues in an breed. Maybe they should roll the West Highland White back into the Cairn Terriers
  4. White dogs > skin issues > thyroid issues.. a well established link. And no, I'd not breed from a dog with a thyroid issue.
  5. Before jumping to any conclusions, get a full blood panel on your girl. I'd be very interested in her thyroid levels for a start.
  6. Maybe he needs a special lycra pouch for them. Yeah like a little sunsuit that goes over and straps over his rump or something! You are onto something here poodlefan I think we should go into business together ;) Not sure I want to go on "The Inventors" to promote the Protector Pouch. You and Atlas can do that.
  7. Thanks! I should have done a search first, sorry :p Maybe they are out of date - we are regional Central QLD after all! ;) Thanks poodlefan (I am also a poodle fan - recently sent the poodle my mum bought when my parents divorced to the rainbow bridge after 12 years ). Ted my oldest Mini Poodle boy turns 12 today A friend of mine has her boy on Suprelorin. It definitely does seem to take the edge of the "bulletproof teenage boy" behaviour but does shrink the testicles considerably.
  8. I think the trainer may have been talking about Suprelorin. The implant lasts 6 months or 12 months, not 2 years. There are a number of discussions here on DOL about it if you do a search. Here is one. Sounds like your vets are a bit out of date.
  9. His coat's getting longer now. He might need the area around his anus trimmed for hygiene purposes. If the straining continues, I'd be off to the vet. Walking 3 times a day is a lot for a baby puppy - how long do you walk him for?
  10. At large my @rse. My guess is the dog hasn't "run away".. but been spirited away to a safe place. Ozziesnakes I hope Aleaha makes a full recovery.. but her mum should direct her anger at the dog's owner, not the dog. Dogs are what owners make of them.
  11. Then talk to your boyfriend. Sounds like you'd be better off if the housemates are gone.
  12. Whitka I would not share a house with someone who treats their dog this way. The risk that they will treat YOUR dog this way is too great. If you have the lease, give them their marching orders. If you don't, I strongly recommend you move. I'd be telling them why too.
  13. Constant flogging of a dog is a great way to engender fear and not much else.. as Anita says, maybe this person enjoys that. You could try asking them what a child would turn out like if everytime a parent saw it, they punched it in the head.. it's the same basic effect.
  14. Clare exactly what do you wish to accomplish using agility equipment. I'm having some difficulty understanding how you expect your dog to do obstacles on cue offlead when you say that you have no control when he is offlead?
  15. Save your breath and call the RSPCA. A dog that is being regularly flogged is a dog that is being abused. A visit from an Inspector (if they bother) would probably achieve far more than any other method.
  16. Our club does not require a formal level of obedience but you do have to pass a control test. That would require a solid wait and recall and for your dog to recall away from distractions. Essentially we seek a dog that can display focus on the hander and that can be controlled offlead.
  17. Yep, what Vickie said. No obstacles should be done on lead.
  18. Why not do some obedience training and then do agility training for real?? A dog that doesn't listen and focus on you is going to be virtually impossible to train on obstacles, even in your back yard.
  19. Nope, he is not desexed yet. Planning to, but not yet. It could be pus or it could be smegma which is perfectly normal for male dogs. Only a vet can tell you which is which.
  20. Yes, i am a smoker.. didn't know that could put my puppy off! maybe I should wash hands everytime after smoking! Good point Sttrlvr.. Washing your hands won't help, your breath and clothes would reek of it too. This could be the best reason you've ever had to quit.
  21. Feed him separately in a crate. His anxiety about getting enough to eat may be eased by not having to defend it. Or it may not Trish.. but you can try.
  22. Sandy, I'd be really interested to see what happened if Momo had to come to you for affection rather than you going to her. As an experiment, why don't you go home tonight and ignore her.. don't initiate any contact all night - make her do the work. Ask her to sit or do something you ask for before she's patted. Perhaps she doesn't like as much attention as she's getting. But it would be interesting to find out what she does when you make her do the work to get your attention.
  23. What breed is Momo? Yes, get an Elizabethan collar on her ASAP. Licking stitches wicks bacteria into the wound. You don't want her to do that.
  24. With a less than confident dog Conway, it can take a while for the dog to build the confidence to use the door. I just changed the flap on mine and had to spend some time getting one of my dogs to use the door because the flap fitted more tightly. One more thing I'd add is make her use it.. every time she comes and goes, make her use the dog door (or hole at first) and don't open the door for her. You can open it for yourself and then call her through if you need both she and you on one side of the door.
