Leaked Urine After Big Run And Huge Drink Of Water
poodlefan replied to fainty_girl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Is she desexed FG and if so was she done young? This could be hormonal incontinence. A urinary tract infection is another possiblity. A quick trip to vet would tell you. -
Thanks Poodlefan. I think I will join up. The Belconnen and Tuggeranong parks are too far to go. I am right near Lake BG. And I can't take them off leash because they take off. I can't wait for the new inner area dog park to be opened. If you can't control them off leash Anastascia a public offleash park is not the place for them. CDC's fences won't contain a dog determined to escape - they are paddock fencing only. What happens if you allow one dog offleash and keep the other on? I'm told the RSPCA are running special "recall" classes - that might be something to investigate.

The message doesn't get out because if people knew how much work is involved in the coat they'd think twice before buying them. That wouldn't suit the kinds of people who sell these dogs. The sooner people realise "low allergy" coats = "high maintenance coats" the better. If you want poodle coat it should be treated like poodle coat and groomed no less often than every 8 weeks.

There are quite a few CDC members here, including me. Yes, the grounds are large. There are several fenced paddocks for offlead use. Standard ettiquette applies - don't enter an occupied paddock without asking first, clean up after your dog and your dog must be under effective voice control to be offlead. Canberra has several fenced offlead parks (more to come) and more designated offlead areas. Maps are online here

Yep, you can't expect toddlers or young children to have the consistency or skill to deal with a mouthy pup. Especially a big mouthy pup. Babies teaching babies really doesn't work. ;) If you don't extinguish it early, you'll be having problems down the track. The idea that pups "grow out of" mouthing is one of the biggest fallacies around about puppy raising.
-
The other variable that isn't factored in when teaching to mouth "gently" is that a pup's going to grow, it's jaw's going to grow and it's strength will too. "Gently" in a baby puppy ain't going to mean the same thing when puppy is a large adult dog. I agree Cosmolo - far better to teach no mouthing. Young children shouldn't be expected to have to deal with mouthy pups either - that'a parent's job.

In your opinion. My dogs receive both chiropracty and canine message from qualified practioners who cooperate to work as a team. I think both have their uses. Canine chiropractors have helped a lot of dogs. I've the improvements with my own eyes. They do solve problems. If you've never seen a dog assisted by a chiropractor, you need to get out more.

Yes, teach your puppy not to mouth you at at all. Simple rule - no mouth on any part of anyone's body. Far easier to teach the pup a simple prohibition rather than "sometimes its OK to mouth provided you don't do it too hard". Organise play dates with other pup owners. Let the pups teach each other bite inhibition. You teach no mouthing people at all.

Dogs Rib Cage Fusing Together?
poodlefan replied to 2foxies's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Good luck. I've been through the drama of spinal issues with my boy this year and its no picnic. I'd definitely recommend a specialist consult if they indicate any spinal issues. Don't rule out a chiropractic consult either. And if he's carrying any excess weight, time for a diet. -
I'd be suggesting a behavioural consult and no more dog fostering until you figure out what you're dealing with.

Dogs Rib Cage Fusing Together?
poodlefan replied to 2foxies's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Is it actually occuring now or has it been present since birth? My youngest poodle has some fused ribs.. in and of themselves they don't necessarily create problems but if they put pressure on the spine its another matter. Has the vet indicated why the ribs are causing pain? -

Keep the other dog on lead or a long line at all times. Let Obi set the pace. If he gets to the point of play bowing or actually making contact with her then (and only then) would I think about free play.

I feed Artemis Power to my Whippet boy also. The poods are on Artemis Seniors - they'd look like fluffy eggs if they got Power.

Take a chair outside.. stay out there.. reward like crazy for the right result. Sounds like you're not waiting long enough.

Overly friendly dogs are not what you need to get Oberon started on his socialisation path. You need smaller, disinterested dogs that won't react inappropriately to a pup but that will set boundaries. The last thing he needs is to be bounced on or squashed by an exhuberant adult dog. Wait for puppy school if you can't find a calm dog to socialise him with.

That's a nice black teacup Amstaff Pumba has grown some since I saw him at Cowra! -
It was always my understanding that any animal of two identifiable purebred parents was a "crossbred". I think Maltese//Shih Tzu has become the label a lot of people use for any small long haired dog these days. Unless you know the breeder/parents of the dog it could be anything. Ask BMP and the other Havanese people.

We've changed the shape and size of a lot of breeds. We feed pups a diet over rich in nutrients and often put far more weight on them than they should carry. We ask things of pups that they don't naturally do. Keep them from excessive on lead exercise and away of playing with strange adult dogs far larger than they are most breeds do just fine as pups. If you want to ask unnatural things of kids, you can ruin joints etc - ask any elite level child athlete.

Sounds like its the OH that needs the training! Every time pup is allowed to poo inside (due to lack of human supervision) it's conveying the message that's OK. Increased accidents inside create more of the same.. this may be the reason puppy is no longer telling you it needs to go out. If you can impress on OH that its HIS fault, not the pups if there's an accident inside that might help. If he'd not blame a baby for pooing it's nappy why blame a baby pup? On the puppy front, I'd be staying outside longer and possibly dropping the frequency of the trips. If he's taken out on waking, after eating, after play and if he gets sniffy, that's probably enough. If OH will not supervise the pup, it needs to be on a surface that it can poo on OR outside. But any accident inside will set you back.

Impulse Control/self Control
poodlefan replied to corvus's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Personally I think crate training and crate games can really help with this.' If Eric is offering the down and being rewarded for it, how is that teaching him self control? Try teaching a 'wait' in the down position.. extend the duration of the down before reward is offered. -
