Only because Pointeeblab said he needs meat now I am even more confuzzled I can't give him raw meat and if he doesn't need cooked meat, I will just keep doing what I am doing minus the rice and pasta and just give him a handful of kibble everyday mixed with vegies to fill him up. There is meat in kibble. He needs protein, calcium, vitamins and minerals etc. I suggest you research and feed a balanced raw diet (which you say your dog vomits) or the best quality kibble you can afford. Several of the super premium kibbles do a "light" or "diet" version. Artemis is one. Then when the weight is off, don't feed too much. If you see him putting it on again you need to reduce the quantity fed. As dogs mature, like us their metabolisms drop. A mature dog doesn't need as much food as a growing pup. Watch what he gets outside of meals too - treats and snacks can be a big source of weight gain for dogs. A pug has a small stomach.. probably no more than half cup of anything in an entire day is enough.. the fact that they will gorge doesn't mean they need to eat more.

I wouldn't feed cooked meat.. Any reason he can't have just kibble?
-
I would suggest you try a light (diet) kibble for at least some meals. Lose the pasta and rice - it has little nutritional value for dogs - its just carbs. Even if overweight, he still needs correct nutrition. The veggies usually just serve to fill them up.

SSM, I have 3 friends on properties with them. General consensus is that they don't seem to repell snakes all that well but they do slow them down, making them easier to deal with when you spot them.

Ooh look - translucent Whippet legs.

Going For A Walk Vs Exercising In A Yard
poodlefan replied to Baby Dragon's topic in General Dog Discussion
Mental stimulation and physical conditioning. It's pretty difficult to keep a dog fit and lean (and sound) with just yard exercise. -

Inside Dogs And Visiting Kids
poodlefan replied to poodle proud's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
x 2 I would definitely be introducing crate training. If you are interested in agility, you will need to crate your dogs at trials anyway. Toss a tasty chew in their crates and they'll be in there like a shot. I feed my Whippet in his crate for every meal. -
Make sure you can feel them without pressure.
-
I was going to suggest this too!

Use your hands to check his weight, not the scales..
-
He still looks to be carrying too much weight to me. [hides from Fliss] Can you feel his ribs with the flat of your hand? If you can't, he needs to loose more. He should also have an obvious waist when viewed from above. Keep dieting him.

I think the outside option as described by natamalie is fine. No way would I leave an 8 month old pup in one room all day.. -
IR: I don't see how this would be possible if the bait had been ingested.

Lameness/limp Left Leg With Worn Pads - 7month Old Lab
poodlefan replied to Misha09's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Misha: Yet another really good use for crate training. How much ball playing and retrieving does she normally do? Hard stops to get a ball can be very wearing on pads and joints. What's her weight like? -
You live in the same situation as every household in the ACT, including mine. No front fences here. If front door is the issue, you can teach them to go to a crate or basket when there is someone at the door OR teach them a sit stay for when you open it. If access to the garage is an issue then block it off and secure any doors with additional fasteners. And above all else, train a recall.

Training And Other "newbie" Questions
poodlefan replied to Prydenjoy's topic in General Dog Discussion
Paps are a table breed. You should be practising stacking her for examination on a table and having her follow you on her lead. Treats are OK but don't overdo it. Your dog should be clean and groomed iaw the Standard. I don't know what that is for Paps. You should be regularly tipping the nails.. good practice for tolerance of the practice in case hers are longer than your other dogs and don't wear the same way. -
I'd be asking her how she trained her dog so well.
-
Putting up some pics and description here might help. So might putting them in the relevant breed threads in the breeds sub-forum.

Welcome back Ambervale and Leo!

That's the thing, poodles have never been associated with the short clip in media, dog shows or dog breed books, the poodles in the show clip are the ones people identify as poodles because there has never been a concentrated effort to change the image, they only have to see it once or twice in a this context to cement the 'image' of the poodle, similar to the 'handbag' association that chis have. I think so much could be done to show how versatile these dogs can be and how versatile their look can be. What small breed won the agility at the Purina World Dog Games.. a poodle. What breed will you see at many agility and obedience trials - the poodle. What sort of clip does the average poodle walking around the burbs and at the dog park wear - not the show one, that's for sure. They've been army mascots, circus dogs, truffle dogs, guide dogs, assistance dogs and treasured family pets for a long time. Many images of poodles are of those in lamb clip. But folk get hung up on the show clip. And now one of the most people focussed, affectionate breeds suffers in those nightmares of puppy farms to produce cute fluffy pups for people who "don't want a foofy dog". :D:

Why Exactly Is Commercial Dog Food
poodlefan replied to ~Shepherd~'s topic in General Dog Discussion
Erny I can recall different flavoured bone shaped dog biscuits that were called something like K9 Fives?? My friend was a big fan of the cheese? ones. -
Yep!!! And I'll fill 'em again next year when people want "new" dogs A bit of Decore and a stencil will turn out some nice painted dogs I reckon. Benshiva, you've clearly never met a "Boodle". I'll get to work on some Grainpugs for you RP. Are you sure you don't want a blue one. Blue is in right now.

9 week old purebred poodle pup - untrimmed. What most people who love the "fluffy teddy bear" looking pups don't tend to know is that you trim the faces, feet and around the anus of non-shedding dogs for a reason (hygiene) and that that the longer the coat is left, the more you're going to be grooming it to keep it free of dirt and tangles. Long coat takes longer to dry.. its high maintenence stuff that many potential pet owners are unprepared for. That 'show' clip that sends most people into a flat spin has a practical basis for a dog bred to work in freezing water.. that fluffy jacket, the poms on joints and kidneys and the shorter hair on the back end aided keeping the dog warm while swimming.
