All you need for titering is a vet than can draw blood and knows where to send it.
-
RIP little Sheltie. Until you titer you can only assume the vaccs have worked.
-
Maybe the obvious method of educating junior vets on dog related issues to to ensure they get regular access to decent specialist canine vets during their undergraduate years. After that, minimum professional training annually should include some specialist canine seminars. I'm pretty sure this occurs but perhaps the quality of those seminars needs to be ramped up.

Titer. However if you aren't prepared to re-vaccinate if the titer results are too low then just get him the jab.

One of my poodles has had IVDD too disorder.. it's horrible to watch them suffer. Darcy came good with medication and crate rest. Reoccurences are likely though. I'm glad to hear that the surgery was successful for Snot. It's something I may face down the track.

Where the hell does she think most dogs are bred? Perhaps before vets get too carried away telling responsible breeders what they need to be doing in the interests of dog welfare, they should clean up their own back yards first. They can start with the puppy farmers in their ranks.

x 2 If it was sudden onset and not veterinary diagnosed, my first reaction would be a grass seed in the ear.

Its 13 Feb and I'm entered. There will be a few Canberrans making the trek.

Question About Bonding And Training
poodlefan replied to Bubitty's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Little tearies. Have you seen The Godfather, Bub? You might jump into bed one night only to discover a strange dismembered bedfellow under the donna I found one carefully stored under a lounge cushion once - complete with maggots. I'm pleased to say other prizes have been left for me in the back yard. -

Just be prepared to be presented with their "prize" if they catch one Bub. -
What was interesting was that I drove 10 minutes from my suburb to a really nice shaded area that's bordered by a very quiet dead end road. Not the place to let an untrained dog offlead. I encountered three sets of dogs, all under effective voice control or onlead and interestingly all purebred. No owner allowed their dogs to approach mine. I think I'll keep going there.

Question About Bonding And Training
poodlefan replied to Bubitty's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
You have absolute control over your dog's movements Bub. I don't see this as an either/or decision. Why can't she do both? You've got a more people focused younger dog because you got her as a pup and raised her that way. Bub had a different start. Let them enjoy their hunting together - on your terms. You can still train her when you want to. You don't really want a dog with Stockholm Syndrome do you? I'm not in favour of training that sees the only enjoyment a dog gets coming from the handler. She's a pet, not a working dog. Unless you separate them they'll always have a bond for each other. Let them be dogs together and enjoy themselves. -
Last night I got: 2 x "gee you've got your hands full" 1 x "gee you're game walking that many" and 1 freak out. Howard assisted by barking excitedly.

'building Better Dogs' Seminar 11 Feb 2010
poodlefan replied to mlc's topic in General Dog Discussion
One of the first things I ask new handlers and dogs in beginners classes is what their breed (if purebred or known crosses) was developed to do. You'd be surprised how many people don't know. You won't be surprised where such folk got their dogs. Explaining to a very frustrated JRT handler why their dog is standing on two legs gazing at the offlead area while the BCs and Labradors are happily focussed on their handlers can be very illuminating. Explaining to the frustrated Beagle handler that they own a scent hound produces similar results. So your dog is sniffing.. well that's what he's hardwired to do! Buy a dog based on looks alone and you're almost bound to strike problems. Understanding the dog sure beats modifying them so that any person can deal with them. In order to "build a better dog" you have to find them wanting in the first place. As has already been pointed out, most problems with dogs lie at the other end of the lead. -
'building Better Dogs' Seminar 11 Feb 2010
poodlefan replied to mlc's topic in General Dog Discussion
Lets put health issues aside for a moment. The more I think about "modifying" purebred dogs to turn them into different shaped animals with one placid, biddable temperament, the more it gets up my nose. Thousands of years (in some cases) of selective breeding have got us to where we are. If you don't like the idea of a sighthound that chases things or a scent hound that sniffs things, a herding breed that herds things or a guarding breed that guards things then another breed might be better for you. What drives this push towards the notion of "ideal companion dog" is the notion that everyone wants the same sort of dog. FFS we can't even agree on one ideal flavour of icecream, why are people suggesting that everyone's needs will be met by something that's the equivalent of a vanilla canine? Sheer human ignorance, impulsiveness and irresponsiblity drives people to get the wrong dog for their home. Tackle that and you've got the problem licked. (please note pun ) We have the diversity of breeds we have because they were developed for diverse purposes. As humans aren't we meant to celebrate diversity, not eliminate it? The problem isn't with the dogs but with people's failure to understand their needs. Personally what I'm looking for a dog isn't in a dumbed down version of any breed. What's next.. breeding exotic cats with no predatory behaviours? -
CC = Canine Control.. your state ANKC member body The SACA is yours. Nope, too many breeds for my taste. I'd like someone who's been in the breed for some time and who produces the goods.. that I can see for myself. Why would a healthy pup need a humi crib?? You should factor heat tolerance into your breed selection. And as for breeder recommendations? I'd ask for PMs in the Breed thread in the breeds subforum or in Dog Breeds 101 Mjosa was a SA Frenchie breeder of long standing - is she still around?

'building Better Dogs' Seminar 11 Feb 2010
poodlefan replied to mlc's topic in General Dog Discussion
Some of the presenters are known, by their own writings and speech over a decade, to be anti purebred dogs. Whether the rest are is unknown to us. And as there is to be a presentation by an oodledoodle breeder who has used the technique of criticising purebred dogs to boost her own oodledoodles, you can hardly claim "it's not an anti pure bred day" and be believed. The facts are plain, there is no point in denying them. If you want to support people who don't support purebred dogs, that's ok, but you can hardly expect to come to a purebred dog forum and receive universal accolades and sunshine. Nothing personal, sometimes it necessary to shoot the messenger. I often contemplate the irony of a DD producer bagging out purebred dogs while exploiting the hell out of them for profit. -
For a pet, I'd go the French.. a bit more moderate. Big price tag though.

Title?? Please Link to The English Whippet. Great book. Best explanation of a breed standard I've ever read.

OR get insurance! What do you suppose should happen to every dog that is large breed and dumped? Shoudl no one adopt them? Mumsy - I would offer to pay for the bitch to get desexed as payment for the pup - but pay the vet direct Yes, pet insurance is a very good idea!

They are fantastic PF - I really cannot rave enough about them. I have easily bought at least 60 ( ) books from them and the most I ever waited for a book was two weeks but the norm is for it to be here in a week The guys at the Post Office roll their eyes at me now, but I've even got them onto the site They have the Whippet Bible at a really good price!!
