If they did give a heads up, they might be looking at charges themselves.. And if someone's been following breeding practices like playing roulette with PRA Carrier to Carrier matings and selling pups without DNA testing them then they SHOULD be charged. Not every breeder deserves our sympathy or support. I'll wait and see where the axe falls before I condemn the RSPCA for enforcing the law.

Probably looking at someone for knowingly breeding dogs with inheritable conditions.

Thanks Poodlefan for the info, i will look at some results. I have been keeping an eye on the dog sports mag and results through our canine association too. In reference to the above quote - see my reply page 2! I would never get a dog just for the sake of doing sports, like i said on page 2, it is a pet and family member first and foremost, of course i would get a breed that i love, rather than getting a breed just because it may excel at sports. I have tried agility with the whippets without a lot of success. But my guys, like most whippets i think, have short energy bursts then sleep for 4 hours afterwards, lazy beggars!! Well done with your Afghan keshwar :p I realise that any dog can do sports, but my original question was what dogs were particularly suited to agility and obedience, if any. Pity we don't have Lurchers in this country Whipit.. apparently they are one of the few breeds/types that give the BCs a run for their money in the UK.

How many of these supposed crosses are F1's and not line bred Chris? I can speak from an agility perspective and say that serious agility handlers looking for their next sport dog generally aren't buying crossbreds. Every serious protection trainer or police trainer I've ever heard of buys purebreds.. as do guide dogs. And predictability of characteristics in the adult dog is the reason why. Of course if you're starting with an adult then its a known result. But few folk I know start with adult dogs to work them in anything. There are some mine detectors and post office dogs but for most scent detection work, trainers choose purebreds from known working lines.

When A Judge Does Not Examine Your Exhibit
poodlefan replied to Jumabaar's topic in General Dog Discussion
If a judge didn't go over my dog once, I'd not be spending money on another entry under him/her. I'd not make a fuss but I'd never give them another one. -
There's a threshold question to be asked about intentional crossbreeding.. WHY? No F1 crossbreeder can guarantee the results of any mating in terms of pup characteristics. Those going beyond F1 to develop new breeds have my blessing if they're responsible and treat the dogs well. But the myth that crossing two breeds gives you the best of both is just that.. a myth. And few crossbreeders do anything more than F1 matings.

One of mine doesn't.. Howard chewed through it.

Hi angelsun. From everything I read I'm definitely keen on crate training. Thanks for that document I will add it to my growing list of helpful literature! When I said I wasn't keen on crating for 4-5 hours at 12 weeks it wasn't because I'm concerned about imprisoning him, I was more concerned about whether that would be too long for him to hold it in thus forcing him to go in his den and possibility causing him distress. Yes, too long. He'd be likely to soil the crate and undo the training. I would put the crate in the laundry or similar (where he has access to the dog door) and let him use it to sleep in. I'd not suggest confining him for this long at any stage if you aren't there.

Akc Compatability With Australian Register
poodlefan replied to tunagirll's topic in General Dog Discussion
No idea why they weren't included in the original standards. Quite a few poodle folk are concerned that if allowed in, the quest for flashy markings will see the overall quality of dogs plummet. I can see their point. -
If she won't walk on grass, good luck getting her to walk at all in boots! Ruffwear make some good ones but I suggest you persevere with getting her to walk on grass.

I would NOT use a cotton bud.. just squirt some in. You don't want anything but ointment to touch the eye.

Eye Ointment Application

If you have no idea about how to apply it into the eye, get the vet to show you. It's generally not difficult. -
Eye Ointment Application
poodlefan replied to Mad about Oscar's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Be matter of fact about it. If the ointment's in the fridge, take it out a few minutes before application. Stick it in and give him a treat or his dinner afterwards. -

Hi DOLers, Troy has given me permission to start a thread to gather information about research and studies about dogs. He will pin this one. If you've located or read a study about some aspect of our canine friends could you please place the following information here. * Research/study title * Brief summary of research topic/findings * Link to research or institution that holds it * Brief comment on the study If people want to discuss a particular study, can they please start another thread? That way this one can simply be a source for those looking for particular research. ;)

Things You Never Thought You Would Do Before
poodlefan replied to Bubitty's topic in General Dog Discussion
Ok you got me there! ;) I worry about the really hard crumbly poos! So I squeeze them and rate them from 1-5 with 5 being the hardest and if he poos a 4-5, its more pureed veg for dinner! Dog poo is meant to be hard and crumbly Bub.. it shows a good quantity of bone in it. -
If you want to know what does well in these sports, look at the results. In agility, the sport is dominated by 500 dogs.. BCs, the odd Kelpie or Coolie. But to handle a high drive working dog WELL, is not easy. There are a lot of barking, spinning frustrated working dogs around, handled by people who thought that simply getting the right breed would put them in the winners circle. In height trials, the utility gundogs, poodles, Papillons and fast shelties hold their own. But they can't compete against a fast 500 dog if it keeps the bars up. Obedience.. I think its easier with a larger dog. I'd go Golden Retriever, Labrador, working dog or Utility Gundog. There will always be exceptional breed individuals trained by great trainers but that doesn't make a whole breed a good sports dog prospect. Look to where the numbers are. Then it comes down to selection of the right pup, the right training and the right handling. However, if you wouldn't want to own one of these dogs and not compete with it then don't buy a dog for the job. What happens when that dog becomes unsound or can't compete - do you still want to live with it? If the answer is no then buy the breed you love and do whatever is possible with that. Daisy there are a few local RRs that do agility. Personally I'd rate a Whippet as a better dog sports prospect than a RR.

If your dog is pooing Bub, he isn't constipated. ;) -
At our club if your dog barks whilst tied up in the agility classes you'll be asked to put it in a covered crate or remove it from the ring. Instructors shouldn't have to yell over barking to be heard. Flyballers seem to be more tolerant of it - at least at our club. ;) The barking at flyball is one reason I'd not do it.

Looks like I'm crazy. Oh dear. I'll be forced to stay in my usual haunt when next I'm down Mexico way.. that's the place with the hot and cold dog shower. :p
