What obedience training have you done with him? A solid recall would solve a lot of these issues. Active young working dogs need a job. You can choose one for him or he'll find one for himself Have you considered doing agility or herding with him?

Hitting The Ring For The First Time
poodlefan replied to angelsophie's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'll see what I can do. Hillsborough has some good show series and my good friend JAG shows there too. You won't be able to touch Howie's headfall until after judging though! -
It might be about to be relisted. Keep an eye out. Do you know something we don't Nope! But if the seller has any more left and the sale has expired, they'll relist. Happens all the time on Ebay.

Yup, although some of the differences can be subtle. For example with Afghans you usually hold the tail, whereas for Saluki you don't. Best way to learn how to stack your particular breed is to either talk to your breeder and get them to show you, go to show classes, or go to shows and watch. Bear. Is that to stop the Affies from jumping all over the judge and other exhibitors?

You can't tell that from the story. There could have been a shed or kennel in a run.

Usual mode of transmission is airborne. This is one of the reasons I don't let my dogs drink from water bowls in public places.

Ooh I think there's one for sale on the classies! ETA: It's the old version. I think I'll hold out for the 2009 revised edition. Check out Amazon.com for the new edition. I purchased one just before Christmas and it cost (including postage and x-rate) $40AUD. AND it took only 5 days to get here from the USA. Thanks Ellz! Check out www.dogwise.com They can be cheaper than Amazon. I find the Book Depository the cheapest of all due to free shipping. They dont' have it in stock right now though.

If you're talking about the show ring Sas, I think some of them are. Fat is not a substitute for muscle and a Lab shown in "hard working condition" does not lack a tuck or a waist. A Lab should be fit and lean enough to do this:

I loved the way in that books she noted that as an English breeder, she always had the option of exporting her second string dogs to breeders in other countries..

Thanks! If that's the one that was republished as "Reach for the Stars" I've read it and it was excellent. Being able to objectively look at your dogs and move on those who will not improve your next generation is one of the sticking points for me. That, and vetting puppy buyers. I"m not committing to the idea of breeding yet and have a long way to go in my new breed but it is something I'm thinking about.

Hitting The Ring For The First Time

She can do Sweeps and Baby Puppy. The classes for each age are listed on the back of the entry forms. It would be great to see more Bloodhounds at shows. I rarely see any around here. -
Most pet GR's are overweight. Unless you can feel her spine easily, she's probably fine. They were meant to work all day in the field.. imagine some of the Oompa Loompa ones you see trying that!!

I hope Lindal doesn't mind me jumping in here but I'm toying with the idea of registering a prefix and getting a bitch (hopefully my foundation bitch) next time out.. won't be for a few years though. Are there any books breeders recommend a prospective breeder read? I like the sound of the MDBA course too!
-
Greytmate: There is one more issue to consider. Any bitch kept by a rescue for only a couple of weeks and rehomed undesexed may be pregnant. No adoptive family should ever have to whelp and raise pups from a rescue bitch. And it happens. All it does is deter others from adopting - word travels.

CW, you might want to have a talk with your vet about adding some whey powder to Charles' diet. I feed it to my Whippet and noted this about it:

Pink camo ordered here. Thanks for the heads up - it's a great saving!

No, not stupid at all. If you've never been to one, how would you know? Yes, they can! Henty is an agricultural show (I think) so there may be an entry fee but for most dog shows entry is free. Are you thinking of going to Henty?

How Hot Is Too Hot To Walk Your Dogs?
poodlefan replied to chichihuahua's topic in General Dog Discussion
If you drench your dog with water and don't slick off the excess, you're making him retain heat, not lose it. The water retains body heat. The smaller the dog, the harder it is for it to maintain its body temperature in extremes of heat or cold. I don't walk my dogs on really hot days unless the temp has dropped or its first thing after dawn. -
Peta Planning To Open An Office In Australia
poodlefan replied to gundoglover's topic in In The News
WnH: Interesting isn't it? While animal conservation organisations the world over are encouraging local people to learn to understand and view live wild animals as valuable resources (eco tourism assists here) PETA's solution to the human/animal issue is total disengagement. Intensive animal farming disengages the farmer from the stock in a way no other system of animal raising ever has. What we don't know we can't value. What we don't value we don't care for. What we don't care for, we don't preserve. The animal welfare issue as I see it will only be resolved by people learning about and understanding animals, not ignoring and isolating them. That goes as much for dogs as it does for orangutans. There is a small proportion of damaged people who cannot care but for many others it is ignorance of the value that animals can have that stops them from caring. Anyway I look at PETA I think they are deluded. I honestly wonder how many of their leadership even LIKE animals. Working on the "familiarity breeds contempt" adage, maybe its not a bad thing PETA are coming here. People can see their lunacy up close and personal. -
One and the same thing GABBA. All dogs are registered with the ANKC .. the CCCQ does it in Qld.
