Purebred Vs Designer Mutts Channel 9 Morning Show
poodlefan replied to Shmurps's topic in In The News
You really have no idea at all do you? PP and puppy farmers sell crossbreds with no health testing done for MORE than most purebred dog breeders sell their pups. $3,000 is what it will set you back from some pups bought from websites that breed designer dogs. There's more to breeding dogs responsibly than owning a male and a female, making puppies and selling them 6 week later. It's DOGS that suffer when not bred responsibly. Ideas about social status based on the dog you own or breed are about as accurate as ideas of masculinity based on the size of your wedding tackle. Playing the 'snob' card on either side of the purebred v designer dog debate just tells me the person doing it knows SFA what they're talking about. If you truly loved dogs, you'd only buy one from someone who gave a damn about the welfare of the parents and the future life of the pup. Only one group of breeders do that. My last purebred show dog cost less than $1,000. I could have paid three times what I did for an oodle that went on to develop HD.. someone here did. -
Before you leap onto that charger to defend Muggles TM, best you review the his/her initial posts. They said no such thing. He/shehas changed his/her tune. Initially the view was: and and No Muggles, I don't think you get the point at all. Responsible rescues do not rehome unwell, potentially prengant pups under any circumstances. You bagged out the rescue who refused to rehome a potentially pregnant dog. Seems to me you need to grasp that for responsible rescues there are no shades of grey when it comes to rehoming undesexed. It simply doesn't happen. No point in throwing your bike in the bushes and leaving simply because people wouldn't agree with you. Based on this track record, your rescue career will be short lived. If you think DOLers are a handful, God help you dealing with surrendering idiots, pound staff and wacko potential adopters.

And left on a bitch for hours, how is the poor thing supposed to urinate without ending up wearing something soaked in her own urine. The discomfort and hygiene issues don't bear thinking about. Secure or desex.. it's not that hard for pity's sake.

Cavalier Sold To Pets Paradise By A Registered Breeder

Yes they are. At least, some of them are. I'm pretty sure they are all franchised so it would be up to the individual store owners to apply for PIAA accreditation. Not that it means much anyway, plenty of pet shops are members. There are a couple of members in NSW, NONE IN VIC and NONE are ACCREDITED as a past State Coordinator and the fact I just rung PIAA I know that to be true. I believe NSW breeders can sell to ACCREDITED pet shops, not just members but I didn't think Victorian ones could At the risk of being boring I'll repeat myself: Around here, you can figure out where some of those pups come from. "Registered" and "ethical" aren't similes and unethical ANKC registered breeders tarnish all of their number with such practices. The sooner all sales of pups to petshops by ANKC registered breeders is stopped, the better. Anyone breaching the code of conduct should have their membership cancelled for life. Until the ANKC gets serious about such practices, the reputation of its breeders will continue to be at threat. Same goes for compulsory health testing for heritable conditions. They need to stop pussy footing around and make it mandatory. -
The microchip needle isn't huge at all. The Toy Poodle in my avatar didn't even flinch when she was done. Stay with your dog and remain calm for her sake unless you think you'll faint. You don't have to watch it go in but it's over in a flash anyway. Thanks! Your right! Have to be brave now I'm a fur Mummy! Do you know about how much I will be looking at for micro-chipping? Might get it done with her next needle? Or is that not a good idea? No idea on price I'm afraid. It's been years since I had my dogs done. No reason why it can't be done at vaccination time though. Have you booked her in for puppy school? Given that she's probably missed out on some important early experiences, you'll need to do that AND get her out and about plenty once she's fully vaccinated. Make sure she meets lots of people. What sort of coat has she got? If she's going to need professional grooming you'll need to schedule her first visit soon.

Get yourself a light long line. Gives puppy more space but keeps you in control.

Sadly PoppyDog, as she is an "oodle", I'd be prepared to put money on the fact that you have a puppy farm pup. How did you find her? You can only ask..but expect disappointment. Personally, I think you'd be better off not bothering.
-
What breed or crossbreed is your pup Poppy? If you bought from an intermediary, there's every chance you've got a puppy farm pup. It's not where you live that governs this but where the pup was bred and sold. I think you've got a snowballs chance in hell of getting any money out of the "breeder".

To the best of my knowledge, microchipping isn't compulsory in Victoria yet. That said, my Whippet was bred in Victoria and was microchipped before he left his breeder.

What Is Really In Those Dog Chews ?
poodlefan replied to brightonrock's topic in General Dog Discussion
Buy your treats cheaper online from an Australian source and don't buy rawhide. I highly recommend the Australian Pet Treat Company. My dog's favourites are the roo tendons and the chicken and tuna jerky. And no, I'm not on commission for them. -

This whole thing reeks to me of a PR effort by a franchise under threat of losing a primary source of income. -
Yep. More's the pity.

Depends on which council area the pup was bred and sold in. This link will tell you which councils introduced the law last year and which ones will do it this year. Personally I recommend pups be obtained from a registered breeder. If you can't meet mum and dad, you have no idea what health or behavioural traits your pup had inherited. A young adult dog from a rescue that temperament tests is a more known quantity and few baby pups end up in rescue anyway.

I'm fairly certain that a pup must be microchipped and atleast 8weeks of age before being sold or placed in most places of Australia. Really? They have to be microchipped before sale? I have to admit I was clueless about a lot of things when I bought by puppy 2 weeks ago... She isn't microchipped and I was told its best to wait until they are older as the needle is HUGE!? (Please don't tell me how stupid I am...I had A LOT of that from another forum I joined and it ruined my first 2 days with my pup! I was convinced I had bought a sickly pup who was going to die and that I was a bad person from everything that was hurled at me!) It's the law in quite a few states that a pup must be microchipped before sale. Which state are you in? There is no law that says a pup must be 8 weeks old before its sold. However all ANKC registered breeders are bound by their code of conduct not to sell pups before that age (allows first vacc to kick in and for ongoing socialisation with littermates). Its what the RSPCA recommend too. The only stupid mistakes are ones people repeat. No point in beating yourself up for getting a pup from a less than ideal source. Thousands of people do it every year. Just don't do it again and you'll get on fine here.

They've given their $$$ to breeders who aren't doing right by the pups. How is that not wrong? I don't condemn them for not doing their homework but the reason people BYB is because other people keep buying their pups.

Don't kid yourselves for a minute that ANKC registered breeders don't sell puppies to pet stores - they do. That said, I"m not taking this on face value. PP pay bugger all for pups and sell them for $$$$. Why any CKCS breeder would need to offload to a pet store beats me. -
Good for you!

40.. crikey!

Did you tell her why buying any dog before the age of 8 weeks is a bad idea?

What Breeds Actually Fall Under Bsl?
poodlefan replied to PrincessCharming's topic in General Dog Discussion
Not here GABBA, or at least not openly. They've been banned from import for many years. Personally I can live with the import bans on Tosa, Presas and Dogos. I've got nothing against these dogs in responsible hands. Its the fact they find their way out of such hands that worries me. Definitely a dog that an owner should have to be licensed to own after meeting suitability criteria. If that were done, I'd have no problems with them being here. -
With whippets, it's perfectly acceptable to be able to see 3 vertebrae over the loin.. my vet told me.
-
A few years ago I failed a person's Golden Retriever for an agility intake due to its weight. To say the person was offended was an understatement. I got the standard line I usually hear in that situation: "My vet says my dog's weight is fine". I gave the standard response I give when told that: "And no doubt it is, for lying around a back yard. However, we're training athletes for agility" Anyway, to his credit he took the advice on, increased his dog's exercise and cut back its food. 2 months later he returned and I passed him. He told me his vet had complimented him on his dog's leaner condition. Its tough for vets. Tell your client their dog is too fat and you may never see them again. I've no doubt many try to drop the hint but it falls on deaf ears.

If he won't eat kibble, what's he like on raw chicken wings? They're the ideal balance of calcium and phosphorus for a growing pup. My concern about canned food is that it won't clean his teeth or exercise jaw muscles (important in a growing pup). See what he thinks of a raw chicken wing.. make sure he's good and hungry when you offer it. Warm it up a bit under some hot water. I'm glad he found a committed owner but I hope he's the last dog you obtain from a pet shop.
