  1. I know a couple of very nice Maltese/poodle crosses. It's not the dogs' fault they're bred by people who remind me of something you'd scrape off the bottom of your boot. If the dog's got no manners, blame the owner.
  2. I think the answer to this question is easier than you think LOLAFOLATA If the closeness of the mating makes you uncomfortable, look elsewhere.
  3. The pink staining will be from licking.. the wetness encourages bacterial growth. I'd try drying them and adding some Illium Neocort (anti bacterial wound cream) or similar over the spots. If they persist, see a vet.
  4. Never ceases to amaze me how some males of the species think the size of their dog's wedding tackle somehow enhances their own.
  5. Not sure about wolves - I would suppose the dominant male wolf would sire pups to his daughters. I'm pretty sure there's only one mating pair in a wolf pack - the alpha male and the bitch he picks as his mate. In African Painted or Hunting Dogs, the bitches leave the pack at maturity and find another pack without sexually mature females. Neither of those means that the breeding animals might not be closely related.
  6. In the end, no one can really tell about a dog's weight unless you put your hands on the dog. The scales aren't as helpful. Coat and conformation can be deceiving but your hands never lie. If you cannot feel rib without pressure using the flat of your hand, the dog is overweight. A few thousand years of selective breeding hasn't changed that.
  7. I've been challenged to see if I can register Deshonko as an ANKC approved breeder prefix. Ah.... no.
  8. I'll consider them as foundation stock for my Silken Windhound breeding program
  9. If I do I'll be thrilled. I changed my mind after asking for a pink camo and wished I'd ordered the Lyla. God does love a Whippet owner..
  10. Next year the World Show is in Paris pf. I'm thinking of going again, come along! Let's talk. Not sure if I can do next year but I think its in Salzburg the year after.
  11. I still don't have mine.. happy to swap if I get a red dotty.
  12. Keep pup onlead or in a carry box and don't allow her to greet other dogs at the vets. She only has partial immunity and other dogs may not appreciate attention. It's no big deal. Acting calm and confident will convey that to Poppy.
  13. That RSPCA pamphlet is currently under revision. My CC has been asked to provide input on that process. The fact that you can supply references of happy puppy buyers doesn't make you a responsible breeder. You might have sold to people oblivious to ethical breeding practices (I've heard the virtues of various puppy farmers extolled over the years) or you might just breed healthy dogs through dumb luck.
  14. The other real concern about punishing growling is that you'll extinguish that behaviour. A dog that doesn't give any warnings before reacting aggressively is a lot more of a handful to manage than a resource guarder that growls. It's not necessarily an indication that you're a wonderful leader and dog owner if your dog doesn't defend its food. Sometimes you're just lucky with the dog you got. It's certainly no reason to feel superior to others dealing with this issue. Some times the fact that you've conditioned the dog not to offer resistance to you taking its food won't apply to others - especially children. Many trainers believe that resource guarding, being a natural behaviour, can only be managed, not extinguished. It will certainly not be managed safely by responding aggressively to threat displays from the dog. Oh, and Nick I know someone who followed the "use the squirt bottle" advice. Her dog gave her 20 stitches when she grabbed a chop bone from him. These situations call for cool heads, not conflict.
  15. Just one thing BC.. .resource guarding is a perfectly normal canine behaviour. It may be an unwanted one, but your dog is not neurotic or "bad". I agree it would be stupid to challenge him. Growling is a warning and conflict will not help this situation and may harm you.
  16. Another incident tonight.. Large breed I've had close encounters of the worst kind with before.. approaches in stalking manner with hard stare.. owner oblivious some distance behind. I stop and gather my dogs up (all are onlead) and dog comes on. It draws itself up and postures at Howard. "You can call your dog anytime now" I sing out sweetly to the owner.. and the dog lunges at Howard who spins around on his lead to get away. "OI - BUGGER OFF" I yell rushing the the dog who bolts off to be grabbed, pinned to the ground and yelled at. I walk off and a few seconds later there's another bout of yelling and pinning from the owner.. Cesar Milan would be so proud.
  17. Wash them in the machine and paint them with rug resealer. That's what I did with Weatherbeeta horse rugs.
  18. FHRP got Herbie her Whippet a cheap Barbie knock off for Christmas once. He was thrilled.. grabbed it and took off with it.
  19. That's utter rubbish. Howard can definitely spot the new shoes.. its all he seemed to munch on when I was stupid enough to leave them out. That dog should be awarded for his contribution to the Australian footwear industry. :D The really advanced ones can not only detect the new shoes but also the most expensive You know the more I look at that pic of Asha, the more I see Whippet blood in her. :D
  20. Spikes: Of course if you don't breed for profit, you genuinely give a damn about the welfare of the bitch and pups and you sweat over giving the nod to each and every home you place pups in, your motivation for doing it unless when you want a retain a pup is a lot lower. Add in the increasing restrictions breeders in urban areas face and its a tough ask. Of course if you live in the sticks, out of range of neighbours and pesky RSPCA inspectors and treat your breeding dogs as means to an end, it's a lot easier.

  22. You can't. All you can do is remove the temptation.
  23. They look to be in great shape. Hope the unwell one picks up. Did they come down the National Equestrian Trail?
