The source of the information was the Petcare Advisory Service..usually pretty good. My guess is that these breed descriptors are those applied by owners.. and include crossbreds.

Thanks PF. I'm thinking it is an uptake issue rather than a diet/balance issue. They get chicken frames 2 to 4 days a week depending on what is in the freezer and where we are at in the feeding cycle. Will add Whey powder to the list. Kidney function all normal AD?

How To Complain To Other Owner Nicely
poodlefan replied to sallyandtex's topic in General Dog Discussion
S&T, when it cools down a bit more, I'd suggest you take the pups in individually.. leave one in the car and give them some time on their own. -
Whey powder has been linked to increased Vitamin D and calcium absorbtion. I'd be feeding plenty of chicken wings etc.. Great calcium/phosphorus ratio.

Garlic To Keep Fleas At Bay?
poodlefan replied to all that glitters's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Garlic, like other members of the onion family, is linked to anaemia in dogs. In moderation its OK but I don't know how much is too much. It's certainly no substitute for chemical based worming treatments IMO. -
My dogs really love it too. Makes it hard to keep Manuka honey on any dings they get.

Help Please! Problems With Going On A Walk
poodlefan replied to Alison Ma's topic in General Dog Discussion
Alison, you know that Lola is very excited by other dogs. What do you anticipate her behaviour will be like at the Husky training day? My guess is she'll be beside herself. I'd be suggesting to your partner that seeing a trainer NOW will help you get more out of that day and give you more skills to cope with her excitement levels. -
Stunning dog Rocco and welcome to the show ring. I'm so happy to see you with another lovely boy. New dogs don't ever replace the ones we've lost but they help fill the void. I look forward to seeing Reddells and Ralph together.

Thats funny enough people on here do it all the time. And TOT is pinned who says that is good for this cavie x either. And every time they do they take risks with the safety of people they haven't met. TOT doesn't require you to put your face within range of a potentially aggressive dog Nekkie. If you're hanging on to one side of a chicken wing, it is.

Lovely showground, rings in great condition. I'll definitely add Adelong to my favourite show list. And they had the essential substance for show exhibitors - espresso coffee - two stalls! Oh and it didnt' hurt that they had poffertjes either. Yum!

Well done on the weight loss, that's an excellent achievement I can relate I've lost 54 kilos and feel fantastic. I had my first show on the weekend and never realised how physical it actually is running around the ring. I think concentrating on cardio will be the biggest plus. I hate running in the cold so winter will be a bit of a challenge I think. It's less physical for some breed exhibitors than others!! I showed a Standard Smooth Dachshund and a Whippet on Sunday. No guessing which ws the more strenuous. Not only do you run harder with a big dog but you use all the ring and judges seem to like to see more laps from you. Uneven rings are hard on you physically I find. I broke an ankle a couple of years ago and running hard on uneven ground can still make it sore. Adelong rings were wonderful - the recent rain has softened the ground a lot too. :D

There are many differences as I see it. You're saving a dogs life but not lining the pockets of an irresponsible or unethical breeder. Mature rescue dogs are known quantities, not lotteries. It's not the dogs' fault where they come from.

How To Complain To Other Owner Nicely
poodlefan replied to sallyandtex's topic in General Dog Discussion
What's fair and what you'll achieve are different things. You could ask them to keep their dogs away from yours but there's no guarantee they'll comply. Or, you could simply try to avoid using the park at times they are there. It's unlikely to be the last negative experience you have at a dog park. Personally I think your pups are a bit young to be there at a busy time. I'd be switching to a quieter time if possible. -
Dogs Barking At Other Dogs At The Dog Park
poodlefan replied to Simply Grand's topic in General Dog Discussion
Without seeing the interaction, I'd not offer comment. Dogs bark at each other for reasons ranging from inviting play to warning them off. -
That would be a highly recommended behaviourist who had seen your dog, diagnosed the issue and advised you personally on the way ahead? Sorry for disagreeing with you but the first thing ANY professional will tell you about aggression is that it is potentially dangerous to provide advice on the issue for a dog you've never seen. Don't believe me - check with the person you saw. Ask the professionals here. You've just done something they'd never do because they know that seemingly identical situations don't necessarily equate to identical dogs. You could be bang on the money with your advice - but the fact is that you've no way of knowing that and what you've suggested could cause harm. I have a friend with a small dog who got 20 stitches from being bitten by hers from taking a treat off him.. and she'd also been advised to punish growling. Despite what you may think adverse consequences can flow from dispensing advice over the internet. How long you've been a member here is of zero interest to me. I criticised your advice, not you because I thought it was potentially dangerous. Have a little think about my motives next time before adding eye rolls to your accusations of bullying. I like people here to be safe.

I completely understand this. When my Chloe went in for her leg operations, I missed her so much I went in to visit her. I have to say, I'd never do it again. It was extremely upsetting for both of us, she SO wanted to come home or for us to stay, she became very anxious and cried a cry that tore through my heart. Never again. I now trust that if she has to stay in at the vet, she is getting the best care she can and doesn't need me coming and going to upset her. With a frail dog, I'd advise against it even more. I agree. It stresses them when you arrive and even more when you leave them behind.

I'm not certain but she certainly will get appalling bad breath!
-
I suspect that her first reaction would be to scream the house down, and then there is always the chance that i may not hear her when she needs to go to the toilet. We've already had a few relapses of her using the house as a public toilet! At 5 months, she still wouldn't have 100% control of her bladder and i don't want to distress her by inadvertently causing her to soil her sleeping area. This would be if you had a dog door Tugg.

Think I might have accidentally dropped my lead in shock..
-
I think that's preferable to her screaming the neighbourhood down. Have you thought about putting a dog door from the laundry outside and giving her access to the laundry during the day? That way you don't have to get up when she needs to go out. I wanted to do that, however, we have a white cat who isn't allowed outside during the day. His pink nose and ears put him at a high risk of contracting skin cancer and so a doggy door would also double as a kitty escape hatch! So what would happen if you kept the door to the laundry closed?

Help Please! Problems With Going On A Walk
poodlefan replied to Alison Ma's topic in General Dog Discussion
Did you see SaS's post. Everyone would have been looking at you because your dog was behaving like a pork chop, not because you weren't welcome. That's why you go to training - to get help getting past it. However, I agree that a private trainer is going to get you a lot further than group classes. -
Happypaws84: Of course, there's always the possiblity that removing the food when puppy growls will extinguish growling and escalate the pup to biting. Its most unwise to ignore warnings from a dog.. and downright dangerous to provoke a potentially aggressive response. Resource guarding (of any resource) is a form of aggression. Dealing with aggression is not something you do on advice from folk who've never seen the behaviour in your dog and have no qualifications in dealing with it. If you're that concerned about the growling, engage the services of a decent behaviourist. In the meantime, feed your dog in a crate. Those who've not had to deal with a resource guarder should count their blessings and put it down to luck. There's evidence that this is hardwired behaviour and it can be damn difficult to manage. Quite a few behaviorists believe that management is all you CAN do and that extinguishing it is extremely difficult.

Pepi, kidney failure usually means that a dog doesn't have long to live. I think you'd better prepare yourself to say goodbye. I suggest you have a good talk to the vet about Pepi's prognosis and whether it is time to give him his wings. The kindest thing we can do for a dog we love is to ease their path out of this world when their time has come. I think Pepi's may be close.
