Those who breed with colour as the primary goal don't benefit any breed.

Couple Using Halti's On Thier 2 Malamutes
poodlefan replied to skip's topic in General Dog Discussion
You can get through quite a few months of training sometimes before someone tells you that. I've seen people at my club make it all the way into a trialling class before they learned that halti's aren't permitted in the trialling ring. -
Kind of hard to say Jed. Is a Coolie a breed or is it a type that's still being developed into a breed? Given the prevalence of working dogs in pounds, I'd say its possible to find foundation stock for a developing breed there. It sure worked for Herr Dobermann. However questions about health checks and whether the dog is being passed off as something it isn't (of known pedigree) would need to be answered.

I haven't checked it out carefully but I think the dog roll is more cost effective. Howard stole some of Diva's dogs' 4Legs roll on the weekend - he seemed to like it!

Tumbarumba/ Bethungra Shows 20&21/3/2010
poodlefan replied to ertaecavs's topic in General Dog Discussion
I Think that the Sydney royal is early next year?? so if it is we will have our shows the 2nd weekend of March next year...but I will confirm soon..but your booking will be safe Thanks. Hopefully they'll just transfer them to the appropriate dates. -
I use it when travelling. My dogs really like it and as a softer food, it keeps them 'regular' when they're not going to get a lot of exercise.

Tumbarumba/ Bethungra Shows 20&21/3/2010
poodlefan replied to ertaecavs's topic in General Dog Discussion
Great shows! In anticpation of another double show, I've already booked at the caravan park for next year! :D My special thanks go to: *Tumbarumba council for the trailer loos - an absolute blessing. :D I'm thinking there's money to be made having one of these at dog shows..it would sure raise some eyebrows bringing one of those instead of a dog trailer! * Tumbarumba Creek Caravan Park for being truly dog friendly The noisy dog on Friday night was actually over the road from the caravan park. * Tumbarumba Rotary for turning up to feed us on the Sunday - that was great! Quite a few folk hadn't pinged it was a double so now that the word is getting out, I'd expect bigger numbers next year. The local cafe does a great pizza by the way. ;) Melinda are you in a position to confirm the show will be the third weeknd in March next year? -
I'm in - it was such a great location and event. But how do we know when next years shows will be? Tumba is always third weekend in March apparently. :D

He did a great job MHL. I think (not surprisingly) he was a teeny bit disappointed with the breed results but his pup is still just a big baby. Its always going to be a big ask to knock off mature dogs. I was in the ring with him with the white Borzoi bitch when the judge had a chat to him on Sunday, told him his pup just needed time to grow up a bit and gave him some handling tips. What really pleased those in my camp (Borzoi, Whippet and Rhodesian Ridgebacks) and was commented on was how often we saw him out and about with his pup, showing it the sights and sounds of the show. He's a very serious young man in the ring isn't he? :D In Hound group, it pays to be nice to youngsters.. we'll need them as adults for handling when we're too old to run our own dogs round the ring anymore.

A focus exercise isn't difficult. You can simply hold a treat in front of your face, use the dog's name and reward the dog for looking in your eyes. Prolong the time and phase out the lure and bingo.. dog looks to you on cue. Some serious obedience folk put the food in their mouths and spit it out for the dog during a heel work pattern. Sounds gross but gee it works. Their dogs eyes never leave their faces.

Getting weight off a dog isn't rocket science.. feed less and exercise more. Jodilass if you're considering becoming a Labrador breeder then I suggest you start doing your homework on canine nutrition. One of the things you'll pick up along the way is that the best diets for dogs don't tend to be found in the petfood aisle of supermarkets. There are better sources of dog food out there, especially for in whelp bitches and pups. You can either do your homework on a raw diet or feed the best quality kibble you can afford supplemented with raw meaty bones like chicken frames. If you want your dog thinner, cut the quantity of food down.

Not sure I'd be teaching my dog to focus on my face by yelling at it. I'd certainly not be initiating the behaviour by reprimanding the dog then confusing it by rewarding it straight after.

Couple Using Halti's On Thier 2 Malamutes
poodlefan replied to skip's topic in General Dog Discussion
All tools have their places. What I don't like about haltis for general use is this: * A lot of people seem to think they're "kinder" than a flat collar. They aren't. Many dogs find them uncomfortable and many halti's are poorly fitted and irritate the dog's face. If chiropractic vets are warning against their use due to emerging issues for the heads and necks of halti wearing dogs then I think we should be listening to that. * The negative impact that a halti creates on many dogs is present whether the dog is pulling or not. Not even the most aversive trainer would suggest that the aversive should be used when the dog is complying with the behaviour asked for. * All the blurb says that haltis should not be pulled, jerked or used with tension. I see all those behaviours applied to dogs wearing haltis (including very small dogs) all the time. I even see them attached to flexi leads that only work when the dog puts tension on them. * Dogs, kids and haltis? Nope, should not be allowed to happen without parental supervision. I cringe to see dogs hauled around on them. On one occasion I saw a dog hauled over jumps and checked hard by kids teaching Fido to jump. Would I ever recommend a halti? Yes. For someone who needed a degree of physical control over a large dog due to frailty or incapacity but only if taught to use it by someone who knew what they were doing. The ultimate expression of an ignorant dog owner to me is one with a small designer dog fitted with a halti and a flexilead. I see them all the time. -
Ask her what sort of pups will be the result of breeding a tolerant but very mouthy breed with high bite inhibiton to a breed that has low tolerance to other dogs and that's got extremely powerful jaws. At worst, those pups could have very low triggers to bite AND very powerful bites AND be very reactive to other dogs... just bloody wonderful. People who crossbreed dogs willy nilly really have no bloody idea what they're playing with when they mix breeds selectively bred for very different characteristics. Mixing a gundog with a terrier sees two completely different temperaments, bite thresholds and bite inhibitions mixed with completely unknown results.

Where's ScrappynSuzie - she's got a brag too!!

Bummer. Watching Howie have a great time on the Sat, I'm not sure he cared though . I am still going 'awwwww' at Magic and Howie's 'reunion'. It was the most affectionate Magic has been to another dog in such a short space of time. That evening at your place when Magic learned how to avoid the Whippet Shoulder Roll, lost half his headfall, and discovered that if he is on the sofa he is as tall as Howie, must be one of his bestest puppyhood memories You mean another male dog don't you? Yeah, Howie isn't to every judge's taste but the dogs that went up were very very nice. You can't complain too much about losing to good dogs. The Whippety folk said he still looks like big gawky baby - he needs time to develop. He had his standard show weekend: * Make eyes at the ladees.. check * Play with puppies ... check * Have his own icecream and more than a bit of my show snacks.. check * Avoid Jas's Borzoi Paws of Death.. check * Scream like a girl when Mum shows other dogs... check * Get a heap of pats.. check * Roll around on the grass at the end of the show.. check * Pee on legs at inoppotune times.. twice * Drop shoulder on Havanese.. fail. Howie had his very own baby Ridgeback to play with.. not sure Zeus's owner will be thrilled with some of the games Howie taught him though It was Howie who had to seek refuge on the sofa to play with a baby Ridgeback!
-
Yes but I'd not be putting it on a dog for a show. The judge will end up with it all over their hands. Some folk use it sparingly to highlight dog's features but you'd need to have a very steady hand.

Just back home from Day 2. Howie had no luck either day.. that's showing. ;) I got to cheer for lots of folks though. Diva has ANOTHER big brag. And if you want cabins people, book them NOW!!! Fantastic weekend. Great showground, couldn't get much closer to the accommodation unless I went through the creek rather than over the bridge. Met some DOLers for the first time and had renewed acquaintances with others. I was robbed for BOB in Pulis though. Tumbarumba Rotary stepped up (bless them) and provided some catering to hungry showies today. Highly recommend the pizzas in town and will be back next year with bells on. If they keep the double, I think they're onto a good thing. Its a really pleasant social weekend.

Luki - Parvo Survivor
poodlefan replied to k9angel's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Chicken and rice is very bland. Hills I/D cans are often recommended and that's just chicken and rice. Yep, feed little and often. Bear in mind there is a risk that he is still going to shed parvovirus in his poo. They can do that for up to 3 weeks after infection. -
When I see ads for "gold"or "golden" Lab pups I just think "FAIL".

The Puppy Who Loves To Chew On Toes And Fingers.
poodlefan replied to Oscar123's topic in Puppy Chat
Search for "mouthing" in this forum and read the information on puppy biting and teaching bite inhibition here He needs to be taught by you that its not acceptable to put his mouth or teeth on people. It will not go away on its own. Is he going to puppy pre-school? -

Yeech. Don't you people know anything? A Labrador Retriever is a cross between a Labrador and a Golden Retriever. [snap Bully! ]
