  1. Bluefairy: Not even to puppy school? Or to other people's houses? I understand why you'd keep her away from unknown dogs and public places but there are ways to socialise safely during the first critical socialisation period that ends before vaccinations are over. Uncontrolled socialisation means you cannot keep the experiences positive. However no socialisation isn't a good thing either.
  2. Chocolatelover you've bought the PETA proganda hook line and sinker. What Australia does not need is less dogs. Dogs don't die because there is a surplus. They die because the people who get rid of them didn't do right by them. The same person who dumps a dog will often replace it, and repeat the cycle again. Pups don't get trained, grow into unmanageable dogs and get disposed of. And the people doing this blame the dog and do it over. What Australia does need is more responsibly bred dogs sold by people who ensure that buyers expectations are realistic. And those breeders should refuse to sell to people who can't demonstrate that they know and care enough to care for dogs properly. Because we need most of all is more knowledgeable responsible owners. No amount of legislation alone can improve the situation. We also need decent education campaigns. DOGS ARE NOT THE PROBLEM. PEOPLE ARE. Any legislation that targets dogs is doomed to fail. BSL is a case in point. And as for 4 dogs being all a person can handle? Some people shouldn't be allowed to own a pet rock. Others can manage with many dogs because they have practices and motivation to do so. The number of dogs limit also fails to account for size, exercise requirements and temperament. Owning 4 Chis and 4 Neopolitan Mastiffs is not the same.
  3. ;) :D One for me, one for him, one for me, one for him, one for me . . . . . . . . . . . Brandy was for you. If the dog is anxious, some rescue remedy wouldn't hurt him though.
  4. Too late Leithy. At least one member has lost a dog like this. I've been luckier.. only a vet bill.
  5. Unless they're deaf. But you can always stamp your foot - they get vibrations.
  6. Everyone get that one? I sure hope the RSPCA notes it. From the mouths of bogans.. pure gold.
  7. What I don't get about the OP's post is why the DOG gets the blame for being offlead? What's the dog's breed got to do with the fact that its owner can't control it? BSL was never intended to prevent dog aggression and it is useless to prevent dogs hurting people. Effwit owners own all kinds of dogs and if anyone thinks only certain breeds of dogs would intend harm to a puppy, they'd better carefully reconsider that view. The irony of the OP's breed of choice being a target for BSL in some places wasn't lost on me.
  8. What trauma? A flight? Was he cowering in it when you picked him up? Are you sure you're not reading more into his behaviour than is there. Do you feed him and give him treats in there? Is the crate where you are? He's 9 weeks old.. a baby. Be careful not to over exercise him and but do give him toys he can use to amuse himself. Think good and hard about teaching him to chase you too - he's a herding breed. Try not to start on a path that makes him dependent on your for all sources of amusement Nic... the results may not be what you planned. Have you read the Dogstardaily website's training advice for pups?
  9. What Cosmolo says. He's just been separated from his littermates and it takes time to bond to his new family. Cosmolos's point about teaching him its OK to be alone is an important one. Why not give him a bone to chew on and let him spend sometime outside or in his crate (are you using one?) while you go about normal household activites. Work up to going away from the home and leaving him by himself. At 9 weeks he's old enough for puppy school. Have you booked him n yet?
  10. What makes you think he's unhappy? Be careful about trying to fill his every waking moment with play. Learning to chill out with you is as important as keeping him stimulated. At 9 weeks he is only partially vaccinated. Unless you are going to a place you know isn't frequented by unknown dogs, I'd be carrying him.
  11. Many dogs have a strong startle reflex when sleeping. The simple solution is to wake this one by sound, not touch. Some of the issues you describe could be managed with a crate or pen. Sounds like your Mum's dog isn't house trained. That's not his fault. If you really can't handle the idea of having him for seven weeks (and who can blame you) then be up front with your Mother and get her to board him. IF you do end up taking the dog on, you could do a fair bit in seven weeks to eliminate the behaviour that concerns you. Good luck either way - parents dont' always make our lives easy.
  12. You seem happy to send negative vibes at a breeder who's a member here BB. You've stuck it to her twice in this thread. You keep this thread to puppy joy and you won't see me for dust. Not quite. Posted by you in this only puppy joy no negativity thread in January this year. So this was total bullshit then? Ok. Noted.
  13. Tried the "straddle" (with him backed into a corner). Ended up looking like we were playing a game of 'twister'. Could be time for the masking tape. :D
  14. Thanks to Sway and Austin Powers .. much appreciated. RCC Dog would be good if it comes up though pleeeze.
  15. Congratulations to the winners. Go the Whippets :D Can anyone do classes?
  16. I put my dogs on the grooming table for these procedures. Mind you, they're a bit smaller than Mandella. :D
  17. Strange how a breeder doing it about a puppy placement gets a different reaction though isn't it?
  18. And the Whippet results are impatiently awaited.
  19. You're good Sway.. very very good. :D
  20. Bugger Staffords, what about Hound results. :D Sway needs to beat her minions more often.. they're tardy today. SwaY was at the post office, when results where called in I'm grateful you do this for us Sway so I won't ask you to beat yourself up over it.
  21. I like the way everyone is thinking... Thanks... Now I just have to convince the OH... I might sell my body :D A couple of runs will be a hell of a lot cheaper than the vet bill for a dog hit by a car. That should convince him.
