  1. Your attention will be something your dogs value and will potentially rival each other for. If you're not very clear about disavowing them of the notion that you can be controlled and guarded (like a bone) then you may become a source of conflict for them. It means you need to be very clear that you, and not they, call the shots in interactions. Watch for things like one dog pushing between you and the other when interacting or one dog demanding attention when you do something with the other. Or one dog taking the closer position to you and growling or warning the other dog away with body language. Personally, I think every dog benefits from one on one time with its owner away from the presence of any other resident dog.
  2. Howie loves oxtail Kirislin. The poodles handle it fine too.
  3. Two large dogs, same gender, same age. It was always going to be a recipe for potential conflict and one folk here would have advised against. The short answer is that they may never "sort it out" permanently. That leaves you to manage all possible triggers for inter-dog aggression with food (as you've just found out) being an obvious one. Good idea to get professional help but it may never resolve the situation permanently. They may be rivals for resources for the rest of their lives. If things start to escalate now that they are maturing, you may have to consider rehoming one of them. Hopefully it won't come to that. All dogs, regardless of pack status may defend resources. Best to bear that in mind. The advice about keeping them separated with food, bones etc is very wise. I would be taking all steps to ensure that you are not considered a 'resource' by either of them.
  4. Dead simple. Not a whole lot more complicated than unpicking stitches from fabric.
  5. Glad the immediate situation is resolved. You may want to rethink leaving him home alone all night if you have to go away though. That seems to have been the trigger event for all this. From your description of the track he wore, he seems to have managed to work himself up during that time.
  6. No advice, just wanted to say what shite luck. Hope all goes well with her.
  7. There is some suggestion that the fumes given off by artificial turf may be noxious.
  8. I don't give a damn if they ARE sooky family pets. They shouldn't be on the street. What part of that doesn't their owner get. HE is putting their lives in danger.
  9. My guys get: Ox tail (they're eating those now) Lamb flaps Lamb neck Beef bones
  10. Rescues deal in real live dogs. The statistics may be interesting but I don't support the idea of a dog receiving an automatic death sentence because its been irresponsibly bred, impulsively purchased and/or poorly raised. That would appear to be the consequence of any course of action OTHER than rescue. People dump dogs without guilt regardless of what happens to them anyway. Out of sight, out of mind.
  11. I was wondering how your boy was doing. If he's happy, that's what matters. Many a dog has had a better quality of life than its x-rays suggest it should have. I hope he continues to enjoy himself.
  12. Perhaps now might be a good time to link to this thread I agree about playing the ball, not the person. But hand in hand with that goes the idea that criticism doesn't necessarily imply you are stupid and that sometimes the advice you don't want to hear is far more helpful than any number of expressions of support. There's a lot to learn here. It troubles me that people fear asking for advice in case they get flamed. In my experience those who genuinely need help get it.
  13. She's probably not going to lie down until she's comfortable in the back. She may be feeling nauseous. I have one dog that has never coped with riding behind the rear wheels in my wagon. Slow RIGHT down.. crawl around corners and watch your braking too. She needs time to accustom herself to the rougher ride.
  14. Your dog is now travelling behind the rear wheels of a car with a harder ride - makes for a rougher ride and a lot of dogs don't like it. 1. Make sure there's a good grippy (and preferably soft) surface for her to stand and ride on 2. SLOW DOWN... especially around corners until she gets her car legs.
  15. Seriously, what is WRONG with some people????? What a tragedy for that poor child.
  16. I take no credit. Macka found it. The one I'll never forget (and apologies to the DOLer if this brings back bad memories) was the young Springer Spaniel found hanging by his collar from a pot plant hook.
  17. Sadly, it's not the only thread of its kind. It was this thread and others like it that convinced me to take the dogs' collars off.
  18. Recovery time from surgery is also affected by weight.
  19. DOL breed specific web pages breed specific magazines catalogues for specialty shows your own website All in all a dog has to prove itself to others to be worthy of being used, no matter how much advertising one does if the dog is sh*t it most likely wont get used. Breeders know what they want most of the time, and know what they dont want all the time Wanted to add .. and if people only want to use your dog because of his colour, ask yourself if their bitches are likely to produce the kind of pups you want acknowledged as having been sired by him. I'd not let my dog be used on any bitch if her quality wasn't up to scratch.. ditto her health checks.
  20. What? I thought you'd be coming to meet me! I wonder if Mr Barwick will make the trip - Team Windyle did last year. I'll ask. Oh I am, I am I'd say so, they usually go, I think he was going to check with some Whippet friends if they could recommend a motel but I thought in the meantime I'd see what I could find. Email sent. I need new pics of the bub anyway.

  22. I thought the prices were reasonable. Worth it for a secure yard. But I am staying home for my local shows, can't miss 5 minutes across town Does this mean I get to run another Greyhound??? ETA: :slaps head: this means you ain't coming!
  23. The one I stayed at banned dogs after some showies abused the rules. Can't help there I'm afraid. Hopefully someone else will know of one. not surprising, always a small few to ruin it for the majority. If I can't find a decent motel I'll look into the houses, thanks so much Don't tarry too long Aziah.. they book out pretty fast. Not as cheap as a motel though.
  24. And while he gets the hang of it, put him on lead for when visitors arrive. He can't jump on someone he can't reach.
