What To Feed An Overweight Dog?

The short answer is LESS If you want to bulk out a meal, veggies are the way to go. Mashed or baked pumpkin (just plain) is a good filler. -
Sick Of Big Dogs Stalking My Swf What Can I Do?

You have a kinder view of irresponsible dog park users that I do. In my experience, those with out of control dogs that aren't adversely affected by others don't tend to give a damn what their dogs do. If your dog is rushed, squashed or bailed up you get a shrug, a roll of eyes if you react or you are told to harden up and deal with it. Issues of size or age inequality rarely seem to rate a thought. -

It would be nice to take your SWF and CASD to a dog park and watch the out of control dogs be collected up by their worried owners. -

Hmm just don't get dobbed in by someone who mistakes you for a terrorist! lawl. I'll be sure it's a nice neon coloured one Maybe I should get a shirt that says "if your dog goes for mine expect it to get super soaked!" Sadly, if a dog really means business, the super soaker won't work. My alternate suggestion is to buy a Bullmastiff, bond it strongly to Luna, train it well and let it do its job. A acquaintance of mine's Rottie has taken out two dogs hell bent on attacking the family Shih Tzu. -
I practically do what JulesP does. Just that I use Artemis instead of EaglePack. x 2 I chose Artemis because it is gluten free.. and dogs prone to ear/yeast issues do better without gluten IMO.

I often wonder how those folk who talk about "small dog syndrome" have contemplated how their dogs would react to an approach by a dog 10 times larger than theirs either at speed or displaying signs of aggression. Bad manners aren't confined to size - or dogs for that owner. I blame owners for their failure to control and train their dogs.. not the dogs. -
Same here. I hope he's feeling better.

He won't if you don't set the boundaries and enforce them. Laundries are heat sinks.. the coldest room in the house. Have you considered crating him in a warmer part of the house or in your bedroom? If the laundry is where you want him, make sure he;s got a warm bed, CLOSE THE DOOR, and ignore him. If his cries arent' rewarded with attention (and only if), he will eventually settle faster.

Sure beats having it attacked or flattened. That's why I said avoid rather than don't. Sometimes if you pick up a small dog that is being harrangued by a larger, excitable dog the big dog goes nuts and starts jumping up trying to grab your dog. It can turn a bad situation worse. I've seen it happen, had it happen to me, and saw the bruises on someone's arm when the bigger dog bit them trying to grab the smaller dog. Sometimes it's far better for everyone to leave the dog on the ground and body block instead. I think it's a good rule of thumb because IME it's more likely to cause trouble than avert it, but there are always exceptions. If you think your dog is going to get attacked or flattened I doubt you'd be in the dog park in the first place. Unless you're clairvoyant, you won't know that trouble is coming until it happens. 364 days of the year, the dog park might be a fine place for your small dog. On one bad day, all you can do is act to protect them. I'd take a bite for one of mine.. happily.

The irony of offlead parks is that many people use the fenced ones because they have no effective control over their dogs.

I was just going to add how for me it's always the SWFs with small dog syndrome which used to annoy my dog. I read somewhere that picking them up in situation like this may reinforce small dog sydrome? I used to do it out of instinct, just in case the other dog tried something funny, but someone once told me not to. I think the same person may have told me that when an SWF starts barking at another dog and the other dog comes running up, to not pick them up as well because it reinforces that too? Not quite sure how true this is, but thought I'd ask anyway! I'd rather have a dog with "small dog syndrome" than a dead dog. I will continue to pick up my small dogs if I can. A dog displaying fear aggression requires protection, not tough love IMO. -
I favour reasonably frequent baths for pups - not just to clean them but to teach them to accept bathing when they are of size that's reasonably easy to control. I have never been a fan of Aloveen (makes me fairly unique here ) I think its of dubious efficacy and overpriced. I like Plush Puppy and Fidos products but use Groomers EPO shampoo on my dogs these days.

What Can I Feed Our Dogs Tonight?
poodlefan replied to haylz27's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
A few basic meals won't hurt. Rice with tuna, veggies and a stock cube? Vegemite on toast? (my dogs would line up for that) Cereal and milk Or leftovers from your meal and some rice or pasta. -
What Snoopy said.

I would strongly recommend against feeding powdered calcium. A decent quality puppy kibble would be a much better bet. Thanks , what about honey and eggs?? no need again with a good kibble? Won't hurt in moderation as long as you feed whole eggs or just yolks. They can be useful to spice up the diet occasionally. My dogs enjoy both.

They are definitely a godsend for sighthound people with dogs with fine necks and heads. Mind you, I've seen a lot of different breeds in Blackdog sighthound collars. :D -
No one knows how they're going to react until something like this happens IHM.. don't beat yourself up. In my experience, most novice owners freeze. At our club you see instructors run a long way to pull dogs apart while the owners stand there stunned. As you unfortunately now know.. its terrifying to see your dog attacked. :D He's at the vet. He's alive. It's a start. Reporting it to council and coming up with a 'protection plan' for Morrison is about all you can do now. It's a horrible horrible thing to go through. Its happened to one of mine too. Educating yourself about the signals to watch for in other dogs and figuring out what you can do to protect him may help if you are unfortunate enough to experience another aggression incident.

No, I'm not necessarily in fear of Sasha's life exactly... but what I am afraid of is that she has a tendency to try and pull out of her lead if she's frightened. So, if a SWF is taunting her, depending how bad it is (and we have some really mean ones around), IF she was to pull out and run... she may get hit by a car, I might lose her (which would kill me), a number of any scenarios. So whilst the obvious danger may not be there, there are other just as dangerous scenarios. Do you walk her on a martingale collar? -
Start thinking about what you might do if it happens again.. I'd be picking up my dog and taking my chances .. few dog aggressive dogs are human aggressive and a good boot to the ribs is a deterrant to many. You need to get Morrison back with a few reliable dogs as soon as possible. Did this happen in an offleash area?
