I could add one to my hund collection. That's a breed that BADLY needs some careful out-crossing. I know it's controversial, but they are so rare they have their own special disease and they all have it to varying degrees from what I can make out. Who wants a dog that's almost certainly going to have gastrointestinal problems that can't be cured? It's especially tricky because they are so weird, though. Presumably if they bred those traits into a dog type once, they can do it again. I think they got down to literally a handful of dogs at one stage. They could probably look to outcross to one of the smaller Scandanavian Spitzs if they wanted to. Yeah, very small gene pools make me nervous. However like all endangered animals, I think revived breeds deserve their chance. Other breeds have been successfully brought back from the brink with approved outcrosses or even just careful breeding. I hope the Lundehund is another success story down the track.

What do you bath him in?

Thanks Janba - I couldn't find that online.

I can't find anything specific on the ANKC website about the details of the process but the Xolo and White Swiss Shepherd folk would know for sure. As I understand it, there are two prerequisites that need to be proven: 1. The breed is recognised by the ANKC recognised purebred registry in its country of origin. 2. The dog is registered as that breed by the ANKC recognised purebred registry in the country of its birth.

Are you guys referring to a brand new breed or an existing breed that's recognised O/S??
-
Just watch the spitz people swoon. I believe they are like Lappies. We don't have any here afaik. The breed isn't recognised here at least. I wish someone would bring the Norweigan Lundehund in. Fascinating dogs!

Dogo Argentino? Presa Canario??

TLC, did you know you can get Jointguard chews?

Take your dunce's hat off Shmoo! The Cane Corso is not a banned breed in Australia and is recognised here by the ANKC as the Italian Corso Dog.
-
Mr Linke does not support a ban on Pitbulls - IMO I'll stick with the local RSPCA CEO we have here in the ACT and you can keep yours.

Howie will be there with his two supermodel (Borzoi) girlfriends.

They do. You need to read more posts here.

Moselle: What's Mr Linke's ability to ID a dog got to do with it.. he's mentioned breeds OTHERS might confuse for pitbulls. They could have been Labradors for all we know.

I remember the incident well.

FHRP has been asked if her Hungarian Vizslas are pitbulls Red dog, brown nose.... gotta be one right??

As its only for a few days, would a pair of baby socks and some vet wrap do the trick??

I'm in Canberra - where the attack occured. People can be amazingly inaccurate about what they see under conditions of extreme stress. I've seen only a handful of either breed here but I can tell you that a lot of dogs get lumped under the term "mastiff" by those unfamiliar with dog breeds. I'd say both dog and owner are lucky to be in as good a shape as they are - two dogs hell bent on destruction could do far more damage than appears to have been done here.
-
But isn't that the whole point? Your average member of the public probably couldn't differentiate between these breeds if their lives depended on it. Shark attack witnesses usually get the size of the shark wrong (massive overestimation) and routinely describe them as "white pointers". Given the trauma associated with this dog attack, I'd say the witness may have done something similar. Purebred pitbulls aren't common around here.

Dog Barking Since A Traumatising Event
poodlefan replied to melzawelza's topic in General Dog Discussion
I agree. If the barking is anxiety motivated, punishing the dog won't help. -
Missed this: Not uniformly they aren't and not to the same degree. Furthermore, with the right socialisation, training and control, their DA tendencies can be managed. Dangerous dogs are made, not born. The fallacy that all APBTs are DA is not nearly as dangerous as folk believing that other breeds can't be.

You have to ponder the irony of Dr Crowhurst assisting with surgery on a child allegedly attacked by a "pitbull" and then calling for a ban. The surgery was performed in Queensland - who have the longest enacted, most draconian BSL of the lot. Just goes to show how effective it hasn't been if the child was injured by a dog banned in that state for how many years now????

How wonderful of Mr. Michael Linke - to put it mildly, he is full of shit. So it is okay for him to state that the pitbull is a much maligned breed yet he has the gaul to point the finger at mastiffs, staffordshire terriers or crossbreeds. He really should take a long hard look at himself before sprouting such unadulterated rubbish. Exactly which part of the APBT being "much maligned" did you think was full of shit Moselle? Mr Linke is one of the reasons we don't have BSL here in the ACT. His point is valid - it could have been any one of a number of breeds or crossbreeds. I'm guessing the attackers were dogs though.

If that trainer is prepared to put Vicks in their mouth I'll be surprised.
