PD: I'd say you'd run the risk of having a diet deficient in calcium. I agree with Tess - why not upgrade to a better quality kibble, and supplement with raw chicken wings (better for teeth and less likely to make you and other raw meaty bones) Easy Peasy! ;)

Help With Breed Selection (formerly: Gsp Vs. English Pointer)
poodlefan replied to Joel's topic in General Dog Discussion
Joel: When you're bred to run at 50mph through uneven fields after hares, you're a lot tougher than you look. Temperament varies but Howie is very outgoing, loves playing with FHRPs gundogs (that's her GSP with the bunny) but I'd have to say would rather chase than engage in full body contact play with larger dogs. He does have a Cocker Spaniel pal he spends hours wrestling with and he enjoys the "bitey face" game with his Russian Supermodel (Borzoi) girlfriends. Yep, Whippets tend to have two speeds.. flat out and comatose. Howie loves a good long walk every day and a few zoomies a week. Would a Whippet be a good match for a Kelpie? I think so. One would knock up faster but they recover pretty quickly. Howie plays "peek a boo" with my friend's Kelpie in the forest most mornings. He crashes through the trees, pops up and barks. The kelpie comes in to ambush (herding style) and Howie madly blats around in circles to pop up again a bit further down. Go to a good breeder with outgoing dogs, socialise the pants off a pup and I think you'd have a good match. I'd go for a male - a bit more robust IMO. If you like muscle on a dog, you'll have a lot of fun conditioning a Whippet with roadwork. IMO they really do need to sleep inside though.. minimal body fat is not a recipe for hard beds or insulation against extremes of weather. ST: Ah yes, the little gundogs that should be in Group 3 but arent'. I loves most Gundogs. ;) But if I wanted a dog for a smaller yard and that wasn't too high in energy, they would not be my first choice. I hope my friends continue to own gundogs but strongly suspect I will never have one myself. -
Think you might be all right with spending the extra dollars and getting what you pay for. So expensive for something some small!!!! Thanks for feedback. Size don't matter when you're buying dogs. Some of the larger breeds are cheaper and some of the tiny breeds are $$$ ;) Better to spend a bit more upfront and buy from someone who does right by their dogs and knows the breed well than save a few hundred bucks buying from someone who doesn't know their arse from their elbow in terms of the breed. Some of the "breeders' you see advertising Dachshunds cant' even spell the breed name correctly.

Rspca Proposals For A Mandatory Code For Puppy Farmers.
poodlefan replied to minky's topic in In The News
My beloved pets will never BE in that situation because they were carefully researched, obtained from responsible breeders, socialised and trained. Increased regulation only impacts on one kind of breeder - the responsible kind. The rest will carry on doing what they've always done and no doubt with the complete lack of regulation they enjoy now. More laws change nothing if folk choose to ignore them and funding isn't provided to enforce them. I see no reason why THAT situation will change. And as for mandatory early desexing.. it plays right into the hands of the extreme animal rights lobby.. and is NOT in the interests of most dogs. -
Medical grade Manuka Honey sapplied to wounds works wonders.

Advice Needed For Council Approval For 3 Dogs
poodlefan replied to GRLC's topic in General Dog Discussion
If all else fails, write to Councillors individually and go to the media.. works wonders at most levels of the political spectrum. Polish up your older dogs most pathetic expressions and milk them for all you are worth. -
x2. I love the Susan Salo DVD's for this type of training - based in the horse world it actually teaches the dogs to jump and more importantly judge jumps. Yep, that's what I would have recommended. Funny how in the horse world you'd never expect even the most experienced jumpers to jump a single bar at height... apparently in the USA agility jumps are usually filled too. Amazing what a defined groundline can do for some dogs jump styles.

Advice Needed For Council Approval For 3 Dogs
poodlefan replied to GRLC's topic in General Dog Discussion
Appeal the decision. Get some references from your vet and neighbours if possible too. Work the 'aged dogs' angle and add that its a one off request due to existing dog numbers and that you won't have three after one goes to God. -
I'm not sure an early desexed pup would ever have sufficient testosterone to develop sexual urges.
-
At 4 months old, I sincerely doubt the puppy's humping is sexually motivated.
-
Of course he isn't broken. He likes to tear around like a pork chop after rain and he has some dominance issues with your wife. If he isn't attending regular dog training I suggest you start now.
-
How would it apply? It would give each dog their own sleeping and safe place and allow both to be near you without conflict. It might also diminish your older girl's perception that the house is hers to control.
-
Then she needs to learn that you are not resources to be guarded like a bone or toy. If you don't have the skills to teach that then you need to access them somehow. In the meantime, don't allow her to control access to you. If she starts to guard a doorway when you are in the room, leave the room. If she starts to keep the pup away from you, get up and move away. I would read up on the triangle of tempation and NILIF here AND crate train both dogs. This pup is going to grow up larger than your older dog and if he decides he's not going to be pushed around anymore, you may have a serious fight on your hands.

Can't help with NSW title applications but Oh, affiliate name is the club where you got your pass and in Points/Quals you'd put a Q I think.
-
You've got yourself a serious resource guarder by the sound of it. You need professional in home help to deal with this or you may end up with a larger dog who decides one day he's had enough. In the meantime, don't allow her to guard you and don't give treats or feed in a situatiion that triggers competition. Frankly crate training both dogs could make everyone's lives a lot less stressful. She will also find it difficult to resource guard you if you move away from her every time she starts the guarding behaviour. ETA: Provide separate beds, I suggest in crates.

Are dogs allowed in the accommodation? If not, I wouldn't be taking my dog.

Bugger the gundogs! How about a nice Whippet? -
Indeed they do, poodlefan! Faxed a complaint with supporting documentation to OFT NSW about the company in question the week before last, had a lady from there call me early last week to say that she had been in touch with the company, and had organised for the proprietor to send me a refund cheque - and I was to get back to her for follow up if that did not happen. Cheque arrived in my mail on Monday - put it in the bank yesterday and am now hoping it clears OK. A huge to the NSW Office of Fair Trading Awesome!
-
Don't know.. I'm thinking of trying my older dogs (the poodles) on it.
-
Or the Platinum. I shall await the results of Sags' road test with Evie.
-
And you have no idea how this dog will get on with the ones you already have. My guess is that there will be very similar dogs in shelters much closer to you - BC/Kelpie crosses aren't exactly rare.

If OH is told to reprimand the behaviour, that is quite worrying advice. It's your call on whether or not you need professional help but if you see an increase in the frequency or a lowering of the trigger for this kind of behaviour, I'd not be delaying getting advice.
