Help Needed For An Allergic Staffy
poodlefan replied to 2staffys's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The first thing you need to determine is what your dog is allergic to. However I don't think his diet would be helping. I'd suggest you get him off cereal based foods or those containing preservatives. A really good quality dog kibble supplemented with raw meaty bones or a completely raw diet might be the go. Five months old is very young to be starting a pup on anti-itch drugs. I'd be wanting to figure out a cause. I'd suggest a specialist vet visit. Is your pup a blue stafford by chance? -
What Breeds Wouldn't You Recommend For A First Time Onwer?
poodlefan replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
My thoughts exactly. Experience doesn't aquaint with knowledge either. I think provided a novice dog owner researches a breed, takes time to learn about what is required to keep it and is prepared to put effort in, then any breed might be suitable. I can think of people who've owned several dogs that I wouldn't recommend as dog owners for any breed. -
I use a human omega 3.6.9 oil supplement called Mega Oil. Its an oil blend you buy from the refrigerated section of the health food shop. I take it too.

I took Darcy to Sydney last year for a neurological consult. He has IVDD. He was in some pain and had restricted movement at that time. Walked in the door of the vets.. woman with a mini schnauzer OFFLEAD allows her dog to wander up to Darcy. I scoop him off the floor and point blank ask her to keep her dog away from mine as Darce can be dog aggressive. Round to the cat section (empty) I go to wait with Darcy on his own. Vet nurse asks me to weigh Darcy so we go around to the dog section and I pop him on the scales. Next thing the mini schnauzer comes from behind me right up to Darcy who snaps and lunges. "Which part of dog aggressive didn't you understand" I said pretty loudly to the idiot owner. Vet nurse rushes out with a lead for the schnauzer.. yes, that's right folks she had neither a collar or lead with her. I got a big apology from the vet but I'm glad that Darcy didn't hurt himself any further.

At least Mo finished the damn thing. Ted "buried" his treasure - a maggoty dead rat - under my lounge cushions. And we won't talk about the beheaded pee wee that was left under my bed. Hope the blood comes out Nehkie - at least with a rug you can get under it. Better than carpet!

Is This Anything I Should Be Worried About?
poodlefan replied to Michelleva's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
She's 7 months old.. second fear period time. I sincerely doubt she's feeling protective of you.. potentially she's feeling insecure. Was she playing with other dogs offlead and reacting on lead? On lead, a dog cannot distance itself from threats so warnings to stay away may be a method of self protection. I would not discipline this behaviour but put yourself between your dog and the perceived "threat". -
Then I wonder if it won't be the first one to be offloaded when it gets a bit bigger.

Colour Possibility In Stafford Pups
poodlefan replied to loveastaff2010's topic in General Dog Discussion
I hope to hell your friend who is going to buy an unregistered SBT doesn't live in Queensland. To buy a bull breed without papers in the home of BSL is nothing short of total stupidity IMO. Sadly, it won't be your friend who pays the price for that stupidity if the dog comes to the attention of council. Politeness precludes me expressing my opinion of anyone who'd breed such dogs without papers in a BSL state. :D: -
That's definitely a CKCS type head!!! I've seen Lab/Poodle mixes that are way taller than either parent. Maybe this is just mixed genes at work.
-
Had I not been told what Poppy was, Brittany mix would have been my guess too Kavik.
-
I've seen a CKCS/Cocker Spaniel mix that looked like Poppy. Not sure on her exact height (don't have anything to measure her) But I would estimate from foot up to the top of her back that she is 40 - 45cm. I brought her a coat that was a 45cm one and it fits her perfectly. That might add give some extra info about her size. I never realised Cav's were smaller than her. I actually thought they would be the same size. Very interesting! Mini poodle breed standard tops out at about 36cm (15 inches) although there are plenty larger than that. Poppy is way leggier than a CKCS and that ticked coat says there might be another spaniel in the mix.. Got a head shot???
-
PD how tall is Poppy? She looks mighty tall for a CKCS mix but that might be the poodle coming through. or just the photo (ETA: Snap Rommi!) I note that the breed weight for a CKCS in the standard is: I've seen a CKCS/Cocker Spaniel mix that looked like Poppy.

I wonder how old the pups were and their origin. Oklahoma is puppy farm country.

what a ridiculous thing to say. They are paying for a dog? They were hoping for something within their budget. THey have said they may pay the extra? I dont have a vet emergency fund for my 2 dogs, but if something was to happen I would somehow find the money or borrow it. This is where pet insurance is a good idea. I dont want pet insurance PF And that's your choice. But if people will struggle to cover any four figure vet bill, then IMO it sure beats putting your dog to sleep because you can't afford treatment. That's a reality that plays out at vets all over Australia every week.

Could be a symptom of a bacterial skin infection. One of my poodles had something similar that was only cured with antibiotics. I'd be off to the vet for a check up.

Same here" * pup's face torn after going into prickly bush after rabbit * Manuka Honey applied * There is a scar but it's not significant. Ah, sighthounds.. gotta love em. ;)

Charlie's not 'broken', he's "special". ;)

It's the whites... but you have to feed a hell of a lot of them on their own for it to have any effect. 11kg sounds pretty hefty - got a photo of Poppy?
-
My guys get goats milk every morning with an oil blend and Joint Guard. They're not spoiled, really they aren't. ;)
-
My 4.8kg poodle gets ONE chicken wing for a meal and that's her only meal for the day. I think PD's pup is probably no larger so one wing would be fine in conjuction with kibble. Once she's finished growing, don't let her become a porker - cut the food back.
-
I'd say you'd run the risk of having a diet deficient in calcium. I agree with Tess - why not upgrade to a better quality kibble, and supplement with raw chicken wings (better for teeth and less likely to make you and other raw meaty bones) Easy Peasy! ;) Can you reccomend better quality kibbles that won't break the bank??? Advance would be my first recommendation. It's a premium (not a super premium) and my friends dogs do well on it. Don't forget with the more expensive kibbles you actually tend to feed less (and pick up less in the back yard).
