My Dog Pees On His Front Legs
poodlefan replied to Sasha (Alexander)'s topic in General Dog Discussion
Plush Puppy Wonder Wash is my preferred show treatment for pee legs. Spray on, work it in, wipe it off. Fantastic stuff. -
But could he still be a snugglebum? I have no bigger wish in the world than to end up with a total snugglebum who prefers my arms more than any ball in the world. ;)There's not a lot of mouths around me who could pass on info about a breeder (all my friends bought their pets from shops, RSPCA, or a friend of the family's accidental litter), and I actually joined this website after I found myself the perfect breeder for me There was only a few Vall puppy listings anyways, and Cassie just struck a good cord with me from the start! Maybe I can be others' words of mouth one day then? Not sure I'd describe Howie as a "snugglebum" but he's an affectionate boy. I think a lot of how dogs interact with us is inculcated by us anyway.

Getting Compliance Without A Reward On Offer?
poodlefan replied to Lucy's mama's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
If your dog won't obey a cue without seeing food, then I'd say you've got a tainted cue and never successfully faded the lure. Retrain with a new word and fade that lure as soon as you get reliable compliance to a verbal cue. Then randomise the reward schedule. -
My Dog Pees On His Front Legs
poodlefan replied to Sasha (Alexander)'s topic in General Dog Discussion
Howie can still hit his front legs when he cocks a back one. He's a talented boy. -
Saturday I shall eat enough pizza for the other two days.

I hope the woodfired pizza dude is there again this year. And these guys

My Dog Pees On His Front Legs
poodlefan replied to Sasha (Alexander)'s topic in General Dog Discussion
Anyone would think you own Whippets!! Howie's better than he used to be but frequent leg washing and pretreatment with Ice on Ice is how I manage it. -
Just checked the forecast. Friday looks OK. Saturday "mostly sunny". Sunday Ok. The cyclone proof pink and purple palace will be there, tied down with the most elaborate pegging system known to man (got "engineer approved" at Wagga ) .. we'll be OK. Will pack the gumboots though.

Same. The current favourites with my tribe are the ones with a rattle in them.

Rain, hail or shine, the dog show folk will turn up.
-
Plush, makes noise, can be thrown.

What about show puppies then? Do you still attempt to match them up or is it a case of just picking the best-looking dog with no regard to any other factor? I was a bit worried with how that would go; I want to show my boy when I get him but I don't want to forgo the perfect puppy for me for nothing but looks @Poodlefan: It's nice that you have a trusted breeder already, I've been reading all these horror stories on DOL about unethical breeders and how just because they're listed on DOL it doesn't mean they're any good. Scared me for a bit! There is way more to a good show dog than just looks Djubre - you need a sound, confident pup with a degree of trainability regardless of breed. I found Howie's breeder by word of mouth and got a good recommendation from another breeder. Its how I'd recommend ANYONE find the right breeder

Breed Groups And Their Uses And Problems
poodlefan replied to MissMolly's topic in General Dog Discussion
Most of the "problems" you've identified are owner, not breed created. If you identified that as small dogs, developed to be kept indoors and as constant companions, they don't cope well with an outside life and little attention, I think that would be a far more accurate assessment of the Toy Group. -
Piaf - after Edith..

I hope it doesn't come to that vetrg, but from what I've read, if the antibiotics don't work again this time then that's the next step In the meantime I'll try to do everything I can to get her immunity as high as possible Yes, a friend of mine's bitch had this and did require surgery to resolve the problem.

Breed Groups And Their Uses And Problems
poodlefan replied to MissMolly's topic in General Dog Discussion
Given the disparity of breeds within some Groups, you'll not find too many common uses OR problems. What do you mean by "problems" by the way? -
Same here.. in Whippets everyone chips in. I've only got one dog so I usually help out with the larger show strings. I'll handle for anyone if it doesn't mean I have to rush my own dog. In Group 4 I've handled a Basset, a Beagle, a Borzoi. a Standard Smooth Dachsie, a Deerhound and multiple Whippets - fortunately not all at the same show. Pays to look down the lead before you start though.. not a good thing to be ready to run with a sighthound if you've got a Havanese on the end of the lead. I nearly launched poor Arkie at Bairnsdale last year. Not to worry though - first time I ran with a Deerhound, she nearly launched me!!
-
Personally I'm not sure I'd mate a dilute colour dog to a dilute colour bitch in any breed.

I've done that I was thinking about how fast I got a receipt back. Nothing returned here.. but I entered ages ago. There were two different addresses/show secretaries for these shows.

First time I saw Howie in the flesh was when he arrived in his crate at the airline freight terminal. I'd had photos beforehand though. His breeders did right by me and I expect the next pup I get will be from the same breeders and chosen by them again.
-
Danois: That's what I'd be pointing out to them. Sadly, irresponsible or ignorant owners are what makes dog parks no go zones for so many of us.. regardless of the size of dogs they own.

A Good Enough Reason Not To Feed Dogs A Commercial Diet ?
poodlefan replied to Moselle's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'll need to take some new shots for the Whippet thread. Howie turns two tomorrow! I may feed kibble but I've done my homework and feed what I consider to be the best available. -
A Good Enough Reason Not To Feed Dogs A Commercial Diet ?
poodlefan replied to Moselle's topic in General Dog Discussion
I was a hard line BARFer for many years although I resisted the urge to preach to others for the most part. My youngest dog stopped that - no matter what I did he refused point blank to eat my BARF mix. So now all my dogs get RMBs and kibble. They're not dead yet. :D -
Very Sick Pup, How To Get It To Eat
poodlefan replied to SAAM's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
What did the vet recommend? A very sick pup might do better for a few days on liquids only and then on a VERY bland diet for at least a week. You don't want to overburden their system too early. If my pup was that sick, I think I'd want it back at the vets on a drip.
