  1. Those that have them need to register them (as should already have occured). Anything coming out of a shelter will have a breed attribution as they do now. No amount of draconian law is going to have any impact on the irresponsible.. that's the real tragedy here. Because that's where the problem lies.
  2. Don't panic. As I see it, the Federal Government won't have the power to pass legislation and I doubt the states will give it to them. We don't have national road rules, a national set of criminal laws or a national curriculum yet.. can't see why this will be any different.
  3. I don't recall the Nazis offering an anmesty. Hysterical comparisons to the holocaust won't help anyone. Register your dogs people. Now. If you're a responsible APBT owner then there's a safe haven for you. It's called the ACT folks and its not a bad place to live.
  4. Did you read this bit? Registering your dogs would be a good start for a lot of people. Not buying crossbred or unregistered bull breeds would be another very wise move. But sadly, the irresponsible and the ignorant have brought this down on everyone.. for those dog lovers directly in the firing line, a move to the ACT is about the most practical solution I can offer.
  5. Lakes Bushland Caravan Park at Nicholson has dog friendly cabins - really nice people! As long as you're not trying for a show or an agility weekend, you should be OK for a booking.
  6. trainers in short supply around here... just me... In which case, head for u-tube and get a copy of this book
  7. I think a trainer or a dog club could show you in 10 minutes what you might never get from an article. Using positive methods, you may not have to 'correct' the dog at all.
  8. Unless and until you know EXACTLY what you are doing, I'd be feeding one of the prescription diets.
  9. Depending on where you get your dog from, there is no guarantee that an adult will be toilet trained. It might also have behaviours (such as cat chasing) just as challenging to handle as a pup's. Choose carefully and if going to a rescue, make sure its someone who's had the dog in foster care and isn't running a revolving door of homing dogs from pounds in no time flat.
  10. I'll keep an eye out. I think BB will be there. Hound Group is small. Gundogs is more respectable. I'll have a compact gazebo next to someone with Cockers.
  11. The person wandering around with a fawn whippet and three poodles in pet clip will be moi. ;) Hope the fudge man is there this year
  12. I think you've got huuuuge issues with your pack status Nekhie.. What would Cesar do???
  13. They've got the $$$ to ensure their voice is heard. That can only benefit pet owners. Restrictions on pet numbers per household bites hard also. Sadly, number of pets owned is no measure of responsible or adequate pet ownership either way.
  14. People are being subtle DzR but I don't plan to be. Don't let your oldest child pick your puppy up. She must sit or be on the ground. Trust me, its a lot kinder to enforce the rule than to have to rush a pup to the vet with broken bones or head injuries. The pup is only going to get bigger and stronger from here so you may as well teach the kids what's going to be the case with an adult dog.. don't pick it up. It's not that your child isn't responsible or strong enough for the job - but pups wriggle and they can be damn good at doing it. Dropped the wrong way, its a death sentence. I also think its good to give the pup an 'out' so that it can get away if it's had enough. Easy to do on the ground and its good to teach the kids that if pup wriggles it's time to let it go. Sure beats a bite. You've had a lucky break this time. I recommend you don't trade on luck any further.
  15. How old was she when bought from the pet shop. If she was in one of the cages for several months (and it sounds possible) then you've really got your work cut out for you. Keep on what with what your doing and reward like crazy for eliminating in the right spot. It will take time and patience to undo months of reinforcement for eliminating wherever she can.
  16. And yet an attack on a child in the backyard by two dogs seems "unusual" outside a prey scenario.
  17. I hope entries are posted this year. This will be my third year at Bairnsdale and I've yet to receive numbers in the post.
  18. Because a hunting dog that hasn't been socialised with kids might react differently to a family pet. Two dogs were involved in the attack... something triggered it. If it was prey drive then perhaps a hunting background might explain it.
  19. Zealots of any persuasion = And the less they know, the more they tend to preach. ;)
  20. Howard didn't like it. The law suit as I recall related to a change in forumla some years back. Most of the premium dog food companies will send out samples if you want to try their foods. It sure saved me a fortune when the Whippet or the poodles turned up their noses at quite a few brands.
  21. Best remove and eat all the icecream in the freezer. That should create some space. I have two freezers so the icecream is never at risk.
  22. I'd sooner feed my dogs Chum than shop at PP. Pity because Evo looks like a good product.
