Chellz: Given that I cut and paste from your posts to quote them, I find it difficult to understand how you think I'm misquoting you. Why are there so many dog attacks? Where do I start? * Failure to socialise effectively. Turning your young dog loose in an offlead park to "work it out for themselves" is not effective socialisation. It can teach a dog rough play AND escalate aggressive reactions to inappropriate dogs who aren't controlled by their owners. * Failure by owners to read their dogs body language, to understand the basic nature of dogs AND to intervene before things get out of hand. * Failure by owners of many dogs to effectively control them * Failure by owners of rude, inappropriate dogs to keep them away from others and to recognise that their dogs are not "friendly" but rude. * Failure by owners of timid, reactive or downright aggressive dogs to realise that a busy dog park is a place to be avoided. Have a read of "He just wants to say hi" on this website - its a good introduction to the issue of dog greetings.

EVERY person who takes their dog to a dog park is responsible for controlling their dog. It's not a case of different rules for different people. Who said the OP was in the wrong? Certainly not me. What was said was that the guy that yelled at her may simply have been trying to ensure that the OP took his request to keep her dog away from his SERIOUSLY. God knows a lot of folk neither listen nor respond to such requests when made politely. I hope you understand that most dogs, given sufficent provocation from a rude strange dog WILL snap. Snapping is a warning - not an "attack". A dog under effective control does not blow off its owner and run up to other dogs. Not all dogs care to interact with strange dogs. It pays to bear that in mind

And paint a big target on its arse because you've just made it a sitting duck. I don't take my reactive dog to the park. Neither do most owners in the peak user times. I'd never take a muzzled dog to one. I just love when a dog stalks up fully hackled up with its tail over its back and the owner says "he's just being friendly". The sad fact is that the ignorance and lack of consideration displayed by some dog owners means that dog parks are a no go zone for many others. No one I know that I consider knowledgeable about dogs will go near a public dog park in the busy times.

Really? How do you know this for sure? a Perhaps the dog is just fine unless someone allows their dog to get in its face. That's provocation, not temptation IMO!! You do understand that DA dogs are not usually a danger to kids don't you? and how do you know it is not a high risk dog?? would you risk your dog/child? If yes well then im glad i dont live with you. Why should she or anyone have to have a lead on their dog just "incase" its gets in the dogs face and attack!! So a dog has to attack a person or dog to be labelled as 'a danger'.. Havent you heard of a preventative measure.. Maybe then there wouldnt be as many dog attacks!! and btw Any dog can be a risk to children You said that if the owner warned someone off it had obviously attacked. I asked how you could know this. The answer is you can't. Clearly if other dogs (or children) are kept away from dogs unless invited to interact, then there is no risk with such a dog. Perhaps if you lived near me and spent as much time as some of us do fending off dog owners who no control of their dogs and no effing idea about appropriate dog behaviour then you'd be a bit more reluctant to label a dog that displayed no aggression whatsoever as "dangerous". In the meantime, try to stick to forum rules and keep the personal comments to yourself. This dog's owner told the OP to keep her dog away. That's a preventative measure. Any dog can be a risk to children.. but hardly in the circumstances described in this post.

You're assuming that such dogs have a social bond with their owners - some do not. Keep a dog on a chain, fail to socialise and train it and the dog simply regards you as a food source not 'pack' Dogs that haven't had boundaries put on them and that have the right potential temperament can attack when thwarted. The few facts available don't lend themselves to any analysis of this attack I'm afraid.

Pity all dog park users don't have that level of control.

Really sorry to hear this. I'm yet to lose a dog. I'm not looking forward to it. -
I"d love to have more background on this one.

Too right!!! All dogs should be able to cope with a strange dog barrelling up rapidly and jumping on them. After all, that's just being "friendly".
-
Snap!! God its frustrating when whole areas you could exercise your dog are off limits because people can't show some consideration and control their own dogs.
-
Responses I have had to that request: * all dogs like my dog - it will be fine * I don't mind if your dog bites mine - he needs to be told off * Your dog's only small - he won't be a problem. I have come close to telling other dog owner to EFF OFF before - I can understand the inclination to exaggeration. :D

I vote yes, provided you're prepared to deal with the rat getting a few bites in. As far as I'm concerned its a more humane method of dispatch than rat poison.

Has Evie gone to the bridge Sags? Thanks for the report on the Platinum. I'll get some for the crumblies. -
There can ALWAYS be issues in dog parks - most of them created by other users failure to exercise any form of effective control their dogs. My personal belief is that high value things like food or toys shouldn't be used in dog parks when their are other dogs around.
-
I think you mean "muzzle". And you're wrong. A dog has to be a declared dangerous dog before its required to be muzzled in public. You usually don't get those declarations unless the dog has actually injured another dog or person. Many many dogs will react aggressively to an intrusion by a strange dog in their face. That doesn't usually result in more than noise and snapping. This dog might not ever have bitten another dog nor be likely to. Perhaps its owner was sick of the "my dog only wants to say hi" brigade that think every dog in a dog park wants to meet theirs.
-
The next breed will be easy. Simply describe it as "just like a Golden Retriever only ..... "

What oils are listed on the bag?

There's every chance in the world he exaggerated for effect. I wouldn't blame him if his dog is reactive. Some people simply won't listen. As there hasn't been an incident, I see nothing to report.

Erny: Funny about the Salmon. I got a sample of the EP Holistic Select Salmon and none of mine would touch it. Howie will usually eat anything. He likes the ALS. -

I'd prefer the one with the higher fat content. -
Just googled that - nasty.

I suppose FruFru could always saute them in garlic. Surelyl that's how poodles should eat snails. I just googled "snail parasites". Snails can be secondary hosts to stomach and liver flukes but I have no idea if that affects dogs or not.
-
Can't help on the parasites but eeeeuuuuu Mind you Darcy the poodle loves snacking on soldier crabs if he gets the chance. On a happy note its a very environmentally friendly way to desnail the garden. :D

Warning: slight hijack Sags would you recommend the Platinum? I've been happy with the Artemis Seniors but would prefer to feed a kibble that is something other than chicken based as my dogs get a lot of that anyway.
