  1. Not every one who disagrees with Cesar's methods has 'bashed' them. Like he'd care anyway - as Liberace once put it, he'd be crying all the way to the bank.
  2. Wrong age Bindi Boo. She may simply be a timid dog.. plenty around. OP will need to build her confidence.
  3. Maybe you need to take a step back and take her out with her lead on and just let her get used to all this without the pressure of walking. Find a bench near a path or similar and have a sit and just let her take in the sights and sounds. Reward any behaviour you want to encourage and ignore the rest.
  4. What encouragement are you offering for her to move forward? Treats? A Toy? Does she walk on lead at obedience?
  5. Waits patiently to see video footage of Scary Monster Game ... Far too embarassing for anything beyond a description. Basically I do my best to resemble a T-Rex (I think there a few DOLers who'd argue that's no big stretch) with my arms, make a lot of growly noises and do my best impression of a Frankenstein's monster stomp around the house. General result is I resemble this (but with lipstick): It results in a bunch of excited dogs skittering around the house and we ambush each other from various spots. ETA: In the early days of this game, inappropriate responses from dogs meant 'game over'. They learned the rules quickly. And I know I'm not the only DOLer who does it either :D
  6. I tend to think of more physical human behaviour as 'roughing up'. I call rough muzzle grabbing and wrestling (why do guys love to do that to pups) and any physical handling that revs them up as rough play. Pushing and shoving games, encouraging puppy to chase and grab clothes, that sort of thing. I do play tug but once again there are 'rules' puppy needs to learn about that game too. I even have a 'toss the poodle" game that the they love where I throw them across the bed and they rush back for another turn. But mouthing is out. Then there is the 'scarey monster' game but none of these allow the dogs to grab me or jump on me. Gee for a person who's not into trick training I seem to have taught my dogs a fair few games.
  7. Dunno - never had one! But otherwise what RSG says - don't encourage anything other than calmess when being handled, don't encourage rough play with people and reward the desired behaviour.
  8. Most lawyers here would advise: * free legal advice is pretty much worth what you pay for it. * the devil in scenarios like this is in the detail. The classic legal response to this question would be "it depends". * much will depend on the law where the incident occurs and on the severity of the responses by the dogs. Breaking the lead and killing a dog that approached for a sniff (as has happened) might see the owner of the onlead dog liable. Who knows? My advice would be to leave legal issues out of your letter to the paper. Give one example and there will always be another case that overturns it.
  9. Given the ongoing issues you appear to be having with your pup, I'd recommend a visit to the house by an experienced dog training professional. Internet advice is not going to be as effective as having someone come and assess the dog in your household and provide tailored advice for your situation.
  10. Given that Citronella can be a skin irritant, I'm not sure I'd be wanting to use it in any quantity near a fly bitten ear. I'd recommend Septicide for ears. It's an antiseptic cream with an insecticide. You can buy it at saddleries and rural supply places. A horse insect repellent like Repel-X would be a good general fly deterrant.
  11. My friend's working line Kelpie has HD. Mind you, he was desexed aged 6 weeks.
  12. Dried liver is always a healthy option. Or you can go above and beyond and bake your own. ooh thought of another - those whole dried little fish cat treats are enjoyed by some dogs.
  13. God knows the puppy factories use it that way. I'd call the Aussie Bulldog a breed in development. They have a standard and a code of ethics. I have no idea if ANKC recognition is in their plans but they appear to be doing all the right things.
  14. thank you for the link. The reason i ask is that a friend just bought a pup from a guy advertising himself as "A Registered Breeder of Australian Bulldogs". I think the Aussie Bulldog folk have their own register. The breeder may register pups with the Australian Bulldog Society. It's not the same as ANKC registration but they have a code of ethics which can't be a bad thing. Their code pretty much parallels the ANKC one.
  15. No. If you're ever wondering about any breed's status with the ANKC, a full list of recognised breeds, complete with breed standards is provided here
  16. Aussies are gorgeous pups! I love the shot of the two together with pup's head tilted. If you really love your girl, you'll buy her a puppy of her very own.
  17. I think if people read Cesar's basic message and apply it to their own dogs, then it can only be a good thing: * Dogs are not children * They need boundaries * They need exercise and training. I'm not fan of the "lion taming" techniques or the confrontational style he applies to dog aggression. He's prepared to accept bites as a biproduct of what he does - a bite for a pet owner from their dog often results in a one way trip to the vet. For raising the profile of the importance of the owner's role in having a well mannered pet - full marks. For the rest... not a fan.
  18. I look forward to the day when all dogs microchips contain details of who bred them. Does Whippet Club of Vic know about these guys?
  19. I'd prefer 4Legs over Chunkers. 4Legs is quite popular as a training treat. I tend to use things like roast chicken, cheese or cabanossi.
  20. I'm still coming to grips with the Whippet topline pic Whippets posted.
  21. But if they were as cute as , the name Cupcake would be fine!! When were looking at breeder websites, OH found out the owner of Beloka Kelpie Stud auditioned for "Australia's Got Talent". Also, Cupcake the Kelpie would have been awesome for a girlie ... Not so much for a boy ... Just remember no matter what name you choose, if you plan on doing dog sports, you'll be yelling it in public a fair bit.
  22. If I were Steve I'd have been tempted to plant a fist in HIS face. Good thing you moved.
  23. I've said its way less than ideal. I'd like for you to get a pup that wont' break your heart. Can you go and see the pup? Its reaction to you as a stranger would probably be a make or break for me.
