Then don't raise one to be like that. What happened to judging deed, not breed? I don't find anti-breed sentiment amusing no matter what size dog is targetted. SWF is a stereotype that's no more attractive to small dog owners than large dog owners find having their dogs labelled as baby killers. Back on topic. The attack the subject of this thread is about was an absolute shocker. I don't blame the family one iota for their feelings. I do blame authorities for not doing more to "deal" with dangerous dogs than banning breeds.

If they won't take them with food, I use the "open the mouth and down the hatch" method. Quick, easy and far simpler than mucking about trying to make the pill palatable. He's a big dog.. just put the pill down his throat with your fingers and give him a treat once he swallows. He doesn't have to like it - just tolerate it.

Pup could have been straight out aggressive. It could also have been fear aggressive. Sounds like both owners might have handled the situation better. Harder to display aggression without proximity.

WOW! Now I'm curious as to who the Min Pin is!! Got in touch with Weisnjac for details, thank you for the info!! :D It was shown by Ashley Reid who co-owns it. Red dog. Does that help?

What would they be?

Poll On Yahoo - Should Rottweilers Be Outlawed In Australia
poodlefan replied to TrinaJ's topic in In The News
How about we ban backyard breeders that indiscriminantly crossbreed and ownership by people whose IQ's are less than the dogs. That would be a good start. -
Surely the breed standard MUST include: And dogs that don't match that can't be pitbulls.
-
well if it doesn't fit an ANKC standard, then it has to be a Pitt Bull right ?????? Or a Murray River Curly Coated Retriever - they have brown noses ;)
-
How can an "all breeds judge" profess to be an expert on a breed that isn't recognised by the ANKC?
-
If I lived in any area and had a neighbour's dog flinging itself against the fence in fury every time my kids played outside, I'd be making a call too. Idiot owners and dangerous dogs ARE out there. My guess is many of the calls made won't be new cases - just frustrated people hoping to get some action on old complaints.

The dog has been described as a Rottweiler cross in some reports.

Don't panic. As I see it, the Federal Government won't have the power to pass legislation and I doubt the states will give it to them. We don't have national road rules, a national set of criminal laws or a national curriculum yet.. can't see why this will be any different. But then we have a national ban on tail docking Introduced individually by States after heavy campaigning by the RSPCA and not at the same time. The RSPCA will not promote BSL.

When the Nazi's came Tapferhund, they took everyone...not selected household members (unless they were only rounding up the disabled, the political activists or the homosexuals that day). It didnt stop when they answered the door for Christ's sake - that was the START of it. You selectively comparing the two scenarios and failing the grasp the magntude of the insensitivity of it is what I'm taking issue with. The dogs aren't living in terror. Their owners lives or freedom aren't at risk. If their owners have the dogs REGISTERED they shouldn't be worrying. Its not like this is coming out of the blue - APBTs have been banned in Victoria for years. The requirement to register your dog isn't new. If people had obeyed the freaking laws in place, there wouldn't new ones being rushed through now. Please don't tell me that those who waited behind the door for the Nazis brought this on themselves. And council rangers = storm troopers? Hyperbole. Do us all a favour and resist the urge to share your comparison with anyone in government. Then again, everyone deserves a good laugh now and again. Seriously Tapferhund, you really don't get it. People are offended by your post and your only reaction is to pile on the insults. If you want to get angry, how about you direct a little at the irresponsible dog owners that have brought this down on everyone. While you're at it, it might benefit you to realise that you're arguing against a move that many many people in the community will support - the Nazi comparison isn't going to play well with them and in particular with Melbourne's significant Jewish population.
-
Am I ever nice? Hey, I didn't call you a fool. Seems to me there's another poster taking themselves pretty damn seriously. ;) I said the comparison was hysterical Tapferhund, not you, but it appears that the difference was lost on you. Nothing subtle about your insults though.. as usual. Comparison of the rounding up and shipping of entire families (and on at least one occasion to an entire train of children) for days in cattle trucks to die in gas chambers to the loss of a family pet is offensive. You are seriously not helping anyone with these posts, least of all those likely to be affected. Write about the comparison in any letter to a politician and all you guarantee is that it will be immediately directed to the closest recycling bin.

The ACT needs more decent dog trainers Cosmolo.

I have a dog with neck/spinal issues. If she's even gone near him she'd have been on the recieving end of a tongue lashing.

No doubt. There is a place in this world IMO for dogs prepared to do harm to humans who simply trespass. IMO Australia is not one of those places and a dog with the temperament of the Fila needs to be carefully placed in the right homes anywhere. A correctly temperamented Fila will do more than just guard.. so when little Timmy comes uninvited over the fence looking for his tennis ball, he won't be leaving in one piece. I'd say he wont' be leaving anyway but in a coffin. Anyone who could casually say that they wish to own such a dog in an urban setting in this country needs their head read. Place that argument in a place like Johannesburg and its a whole new ball game.
-
No its not, but I do plan on owning a restricted breed in the future. Its the thought of forcing people to desex their dogs that pisses me off. This law makes many presumptions about people being irresponsible, and forces responsible owners to be treated as if they are irresponsible. And what if you want to breed pitbulls or other restricted breeds of dogs? Are they trying to eradicate all breeding?I don't believe in ANY breed of dog being banned. Go to hell nanny state governments of Australia. Yes, they are. That's the point of the compulsory desexing law. What in hell does anyone in this country need a Fila for? Get some other permitted Molossar. Then you can keep it entire within the law - and pay through the nose for the privilege like other dog owners.
-
No, not too harsh.. may have saved her a bite too.
-
The number one breed featured in dog bites in the ACT is now the Golden Retriever. Based on that fact in isolation, we'd ban them too. Why would anyone want to introduce an animal like that to a young family??? I'm not serious of course but viewing facts in isolation from others can be a dangerous thing. Do some more reading. I suggest you start with the research that shows that banning the APBT does not make urban environments safer. Problem dogs are created.. via neglect, ignorance, and in the case of children, failure to knowledgeably and responsibly supervise. Beyond that, I don't see why personal dislikes and likes should determine what breeds folks own. You don't have to "get it". You should be concerned about what's happening because it may not stop there.
-
Its an opinion that harms the argument against further BSL/DD legislation in Victoria. Don't ever lose sight of it. If they can dismiss such arguments as hysteria, then they don't have to pay them any heed.
-
Folks if you live in Victoria and are concerned about these laws then now is the time to do more about it than post here. Write to your State MP. Today. Outline your concerns. Avoid references to Nazism or the holocaust because you will sound like a fruit loop. And write to your local council too. Unless and until you do, then this is just going to happen.
-
Those that have them need to register them (as should already have occured). Anything coming out of a shelter will have a breed attribution as they do now. No amount of draconian law is going to have any impact on the irresponsible.. that's the real tragedy here. Because that's where the problem lies. They don't just mean registered with the council though PF, they mean registered as a PB. My understanding that this means no off leash and wearing a muzzle outside of their property. Well if they're not APBTs and already have council rego, as I read it their owners have nothing to worry about.

If you are even contemplating doing any kind of dog sports with this dog, I would not neuter before 14 months.
