  1. Let me guess - Mum was the Pom?? Frankly for the price of one of these, I think you'd be better off spending the money on a consult with a trainer. Have you considered my suggestion about installing a dog door. Boredom may be a part of the issue but a trainer would be your best bet.
  2. I always cover the cool bed with a dry towel. My guys seem happy to use them this way.
  3. is it his show side or non show side? my dog cut her inside non show leg and required stitches took a week off then showed her and she took out baby i group the judges didn't even ask about the stitches though the did see them and she was bald from being shaved there It is on the underside of her neck. Unless you look under her chin, it is not noticeable. Will the show lead interfere with it? If not, I'd show her.
  4. I'd not feed it based on the bolded ingredients.
  5. These are all questions you should discuss with your vet. Now's the time to get that weight off her. Like people, dogs don't benefit from being fat.
  6. Some can identify the prestages of epilepsy or diabetic crises too.. can probably detect very subtle changes in smell do to adrenal or other changes I reckon.
  7. Hi Eleanor. Head over to the Whippet thread in the Breeds Subforums.. Whippety folk LOVE whippet puppy pics. What's your boy's kennel prefix??
  8. This is why I asked for breed. Herding breeds can stare as part of herding behaviour. My friend's Kelpie stares and attempts to herd my Whippet He finds it somewhat challenging to herd a Whippet barking with excitement and zooming around in circles but those herding dogs are persisitant! If the dog is holding off at a bit of distance and staring intently it MAY be herding behaviour. However without seeing the dog, I'd not want to commit to that opinion. What's the dog's body language like - is it very upright of more of a lowered stance at the front?
  9. What breed is the dog? The behaviour can mean a range of things but generally a hard constant stare doesn't mean "friendly".
  10. What's she like out in public generally? Do you get out and about in crowded public places like the markets? They are great training environments. I would spell the dog immediately. You only compound the problem by continuing to stress both of you if things aren't going well. Look to the dog's temperament and her relationship with you. Building her confidence in you will be the key.
  11. 1. Spell the dog -no shows for a few months. 2. Take the dog to some form of training - eg. obedience and agility where you an carry on like a pork chop (whilst not being judged) and work on getting her to perform for a big reward. I know a couple of show handlers who reckon some dog sports training worked wonders on their dogs enthusiasm in the show ring. Nothing very self rewarding for dogs about gaiting and stacking - we have to make it rewarding for them. Sometimes a break for dog and handler can bring renewed sparkle in the ring Does she like toys? Are you getting stressed about her performance and reinforcing the lack of confidence?
  12. Was googling for something and found this - go the poodle!!
  13. My vet has told me this year is a bumper season for allergies in dogs and people. What do the eye drops do?
  14. From a scientific perspective: * I think dogs can see further into the light spectrum (more towards infra red) than we can * Their sense of smell is far better - maybe a fox or other animal scent produced this result * Dogs are also meant to be more sensitive to changes in air pressure and to ground vibration than us So he might have been reacting to something you couldn't perceive. Then again, stories abound about animals having a better percpetion of the paranormal than we do.
  15. It worries me judging form in isolation from function. I wonder if judges training includes and discusses that relationship?????
  16. Chellz, can you please chat about your new pup (gorgeous by the way ) in the Retriever thread in the Breeds sub-forum in General. This one's for folk asking for information on the breed. ok no probs.. im new at this so hopefully i can find it Clicking here will link you to the Labrador Discussion Thread
  17. It it happened in a suburban back yard, you don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to figure out where to start looking for the culprits. Appalling behaviour - just appalling.
  18. Could have been due to fright KTB. I'd not worry unless it happens again under different circumstances. A bladder infection is always a possibility but I'd not be heading off to the vet yet.
  19. I think deciding to keep your own dogs out to assist others is one thing but asking another exhibitor to do it goes too far. Not surprised you felt awkward Bullyfan - that would be downright intimidating.
  20. Chellz, can you please chat about your new pup (gorgeous by the way ) in the Retriever thread in the Breeds sub-forum in General. This one's for folk asking for information on the breed.
  21. Me too! But I agree, not into the flat toplines, I like my curves! Taint just about looks either. A dog with a topline like that won't be able to gallop like a dog with a rise over the loin. That rise is caused by the muscles that give the dog the strength to run and turn at very high speed. But yes, its hard to understand how judges can get past the description of the dog as requiring "a series of graceful curves" to put up dogs that look like their necks are stuck on as an afterthought and toplines you could play cards on. Dear Judges, please stop rewarding the breeding maxim that "more is more" and reward moderation and balance where a standard calls for it.
  22. Is the surgery for a luxating patella?
