  1. A friend of mine has a dog that suffers from panceatitis. The dog is fine on most of the diet kibbles. Anything less than 8% fat seems to work. I think she actually feeds the Supercoat Lite one.
  2. Hoping like hell they turn up here. Good that the police have done a media release.
  3. Reward and media would have been my suggestions. Sending to Stolz and prayers for a safe and speedy return of the girls. Were there any strangers visiting tyre kicking about the litter? Might help to change the title of this thread from "lost" to "stolen" too..
  4. Fattening a dog has been a traditional method of dealing with energy levels for a long time Fatso.. and its not just Lab owners using it. Its the dog that pays though. I think PF should stop beating on Labs. She obviously doesn't like them, I doubt she has ever owned one, and she has cast all her chips on the 'environment' side of the 'environment' vs. 'genetics' debate. And like everyone else speaking on the subject of fat Labs, she shows pictures of young, lean working dogs who generally lack the deep chest and well sprung rib cage demanded by the breed standard. I'll bet she has never heard of Allen's Law (taught in animal physiology and ecology). Having owned a couple dozen Labs, I'd say it's more complicated than usually presented. I can keep Labs lean into their senior years. But they descend from dogs meant for cold water swimming, and the propensity to pack it on is, in my observation, always there. *snort* Poodlefan loves Labs. She's considered owning one but won't do so for reasons including the weight they're expected to carry in the show ring. She just hates fat Labs being considered "normal" when its at a cost to the dog. You may be able to keep Labs lean in their senior years Sandgrubber but around here that's a rarity. I hate fat dogs of any breed by the way... but when its considered "normal" AND owners have a whole bunch of feeble excuses for it, it really pisses me off. Don't feel special though, it's not a problem confined to Labs when we talk about the show ring. And as for the photo issue, its not easy FINDING a picture of a lean Labrador.
  5. I would be reintroducing them under the supervision and guidance of the behaviourist you used last time.
  6. Lets hope he's not a serial escape artist by the time the owner takes you up on the offer.
  7. So why didn't the vet recommend opening the dog up to remove it?? As I understand it such skewers are now the items most commonly removed from dogs stomachs in operations.
  8. You could coat him during the worst periods.. you can actually buy rash suits for dogs or use a t-shirt. The question you need answered is what is compromising your dog's immune system where he reacts to the allergen. Diet can be a big part of the answer there.
  9. The first thing you need to establish is what's causing the reaction. I second the trip to a specialist.
  10. Sort of. We were talking about your dogs being onlead though, and being attacked by an offlead dog not an "all dogs offlead" scenario. We've removed the flight option for your dogs so your dog's standard response won't be available to them. What I'm talking about is a train of thought that supports inhibiting a dog's capacity for self defence on the chance that it will give better to the aggessor than it gets. For any dog above toy size, that's a distinct possibility but I'd wear that risk if it gave my dog a better chance of defending itself. What pisses me off about even having to discuss this is that if people take control of their dogs and obey leash laws, we wouldn't even have to be contemplating such scenarios. Good on the OP for stepping up and taking responsibility for her dog's behaviour.. however the idea we are now discussing - that the other dog should automatically wear a muzzle from here on in- doesn't sit well with me as it it did not initiate the encounter.
  11. I think some dogs notice alright, but they simply don't care. They do what they want in dog parks, when they want and to any dog they want and have owners that don't seem to have an issue with it. That's the scenario that sees me avoid public dog parks if they're occupied.
  12. I agree, but I'm hard pushed to find a vet who believes diet has anything to do with yeasty ears. You're right though vet should always be first call, but a bit of research on the side is a good thing. Talk to Dr Barbara Fougere in Sydney then Clyde.. Fastest way I know of to improve yeast issues for a lot of dogs is stop feeding gluten. I don't think BH has any. Rice doesn't seem to produce the same reactions.
  13. Crikey, don't talk to the dog food people, talk to your vet!! Even a cursory google suggests that feeding brewers yeast to a dog prone to yeast infections may not be a good idea - it can promote further yeast growth.
  14. Muzzle up then Corvus. You don't own the smallest dogs in the community. The chances of your dogs doing more damange to a small dog (eg. <10kg) than they receive is high if there's a scuffle. And I know plenty of dogs that have been on the receiving end of aggression from them.
  15. So if Kivi or Eric are attacked and wound another dog you couldn't live with yourself?? ANY dog will bite given sufficient provocation and being on the receiving end of a bite will often do the trick. Muzzle them now Corvus because given the right circumstances they'll try to defend themselves.. and fail with the muzzle on. I'm not talking about dogs with a serious bite history here but many many dogs will not take kindly to a strange dog in their faces and that's perfectly natural. What's worrying though is the kind of dog that is rebuffed with a growl or a snap and then decides to go the munch on your dog.. been there, done that.
  16. 6241 4404 Office hours are 9.30 to 2.30.
  17. I love the Prestige Mountain style leads (what Ness posted). I use the 5 foot single ended ones in the smaller thickness. I get them from Groomers but they don't stock the double ended ones. The real Mountain leads are pretty groovy but only come in one thickness which is a bit big for the little dogs.
  18. Yes. I'm waiting on Deerhounds and they aren't there.
  19. Canberra's closer. I'm pretty confident the ACT won't get on this bandwagon.
  20. Interesting mix of comments. Wonder who "Poodle owner of Canberra" is. ;)
  21. The Federal government has agreed to try to help standardise laws, not introduce a national law. Where are the RSPCA when we need them?
