Just a reminder that Advantix is highly toxic to cats so if you own a cat you should not use it. I no longer have a cat.

Here We Go Mandatory Desexing For All Pet Puppies.

It's not easy being Green. :D -
Short duration requirement? Healthy dog? Long coated dog? Swimming? I'd go the Proban/Advantix double. That's what I opt for. A short term chemical cocktail sure beats tick paralysis. You can use Permoxin as a rinse and on a long coated dog you'd pretty much have to saturate the coat for it to be effective. Oh, forgot very important question - what monthly prevention are you using now?

Increase it I'd say. Only at first and be trained out of it. Many dogs will be bark when others do; not sure that breed would be a large factor. I have been having a couple of practice wolf choirs in the last week or so, because Jeune had become a bit vocal - LOL. It definitely plays its part. Vocal breeds create a serious challenge for owners to keep quiet. At least one Spitz breed (the Finnish) was selectively bred for barking - its how the hunter finds it when its located game.

Rescue remedy for you and Tara. Run free Sam.

RIP Bronson I wonder if there was a reason he was targetted. There are plenty of beloved family pets that bark the neighbourhood down or behave in other ways that make them less beloved by others.

Know Anything About Stress Responses?
poodlefan replied to corvus's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Wikipedia says playing dead or freezing is "fleeing in place". So that would still be a sympathetic response. Deep. -
Use emotional blackmail on your Dad. If he wont' do it for himself, go the waterworks and ask him to do it for YOUR peace of mind.

You started the thread - you got the answers. Not sure why you dont like it. Maybe it's because just about everyone told you that you were at fault with the jogger. You were. Sorry if you dont like that - you were at fault. How did you go with the report to Council? Its a good question. How DO you know if your dog is 100% unless you test it? Please answer I would like to know. You test - under controlled conditions. I'm not going to test my dog's recall by allowing him to chase a cat towards busy traffic and then calling him off. However I can simulate that event in more controlled surroundings.

Know Anything About Stress Responses?
poodlefan replied to corvus's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
If I've interpreted that correctly , I think a parasympathetic response to stress would be a shut down - animal freezes and becomes unresponsive. "playing dead" would be the classic example. I have a dog that does this. A parasympathetic stress response in a zebra would mean a dead zebra in most cases - natural selection wouldn't allow it to proliferate in a herd living prey species as large as a zebra. What snakes and smaller prey animals might get away with wouldn't work for an animal targetted by ambush predators working in teams. It would make you the first animal they reached. I know some prey species will freeze before chosing flight - but they don't tend to be open plains dwellers. I'd have throught animals with defensive shells or spines would give parasympathetic responses to stress - they pull up the drawbridge and wait it out. -
Corvus: What makes me happy is people who read what I say without immediately concluding that its a personal insult. I said: You don't use fenced dog parks. That's what I was talking about. I said as much. You can be foolish without being stupid. Being deficient in judgement or understanding has bugger all to do with IQ and it is readily apparent to a dog savvy observer that many dog park users have little understanding of what constitutes normal or appropriate dog behaviour and even less capacity to deal with inappropriate behaviour when it occurs. A foolish dog owner in my opinion is one who trusts their dogs' safety to others. This forum has plenty of stories about what can happen when we allow others the responsibility for the safety of our dogs. I believe it can be foolish to confuse good luck with good choices. Intelligence levels won't save your dog when the shit hits the fan. I'm hardly alone in my opinion for what its worth. Many dog training professionals regard public dog parks as accidents waiting to happen.

I'm interested to find out this also. I still cannot justify the need to have it transferred over to me if all it is is a name on a piece of paper. The dog is registered under me at the council and the microchip have both my details and the breeders. It seems to me its just easy revenue for DogsNSW. I suggest you talk to your pup's breeder. He/she should be able to answer all your questions on this subject.

Looks like I'll be one of the people who puts together the Dogs ACT submission on the exposure draft Steve. Thanks for the bibliography. -
I get all of that at my dog club. I don't consider off leash running areas to be "dog parks" in the way the fenced ones are. People with no control at all over their dogs only let them offlead in the fenced ones and its those I avoid like the plague. Watched someone be dragged by their large dog to the new one in Belconnen a few months back - was damn glad mine weren't in there when it was let loose.

Big vinyl placements for outdoor furniture or for kids might be the go. Try Big W or a BBQ store.

What Happens If Your Dog Bites Someone When Provoked?
poodlefan replied to jacqui835's topic in General Dog Discussion
The only manner of dealing with this experience IMO is to learn from it. Keep your dog on lead in public streets at all times. Buy a shopping buggy or buy less if you have to wrangle dog and shopping. It simply isn't worth the risk to your dog. I think you know that now. Tying your dog up outside while you shop is another activity I'd simply NEVER do. -
Corvus: Here's an absolute. I absolutely refuse to use populated public dog parks because in my experience many users either can't recognise when their dog's behaviour is inappropriate, can't control their dogs sufficiently to stop that behaviour or both. Dog parks seem to attract fools like flies to honey IMO.

I pulled the pin. I think most of the other locals are going though.
