  1. Hint: Russell has two breeds named after him.
  2. Who wants to play a "breed knowledge" game. I start by asking a question about dog breeds. First person to get it right gets to ask one. It can be about something about histoyr, in a standard, colours or a "who am I' or where did I come from. Anything goes. I'll start: Name three breeds of dogs named after the people who developed them.
  3. I love doing litter themes/names. ;) Great I have 6 puppies all black, I have no ideas yet like lots of names. Oh well, seeing as you started the thread, names won't be OT. :p The New Black Little Black Dress Black's Back Black Forest Cake :D Seriously, do you have a theme?
  4. I have thought about the "all breeds were developed as crossbreeds of others" argument and can identify only ONE breed that appears to hold true for - the Pudel Pointer. Even then, poodles weren't used after the first couple of generations and other dogs were added. Most breeds were developed by crossing individual dogs that displayed desired traits to make those traits more likely in future generations. That was almost invariably done by line breeding fairly quickly into the breeding process.
  5. Quick: The key issue of course is that many breeds have the potential to be troublesome in the wrong hands. Lack of effective control and failure to socialise and train are often triggers but uncontrolled dogs manifest different undesireable behaviours and some of those behaviours are more common to a breed than others. That truism is 'breed bashing' according to some. Those who comment on the undesirable characteristics of some breeds are bullies whose opinions apparently dominate this forum although ironically most of the rudeness and personal insults are thrown by those "defending their breed". Get real people. Breeds were developed to make some characteristics more common. Some of those characteristics in the hands of the wrong owners make some breeds royal pains in the arse. Noting that doesn't mean you hate the breed.
  6. Some would say they are ugly because they are hairless Chinese Cresteds!! Lets just say that some breeds age more gracefully than others. Can you identify a 'birth defect' other than their hairless skin? Warts, sun spots, cataracts and tooth removal have done the rest.
  7. K&P: The only 'defect' the big winner of that ugly dog contest had was 'old age'. He was an aged Chinese Crested.
  8. Types a response. Deletes it. Types another Deletes it. Nope, not worth it. I've been there and ain't going to be called a no life effwit bully for expressing an opinion again. Score one for muzzling of frank breed discussion on this forum. OP, get a second fence inside yours to keep your Scotty off the fence line or talk to the neighbours about upgrading to colour bond fence with concrete sleepers at the base. Regardless of what the ALL the dogs do or do not do, it will discourage ALL of them from any form of barrier aggression (which by the way my poodles will indulge in) and keep noise levels down.
  9. Looks like a skull deformity to me.
  10. Brad does poo patrols, loves going to the supermarket, makes a mean cuppa and is a whiz at packaging up dog food. Sway seems reluctant to send him away out on many 'missions' though. ;) Maybe its because he likes housework.
  11. I'm also recommending WS branch out into the litter/breeder protection business. Guaranteed to be stationed by the whelping box within 24 hours of birth and willing to deal with pesky litter enquirers or any unwelcome tyre kickers. Samples follow. Meet Knuckles (also has veterinary post natal care skills and makes a mean hot chocolate). He's also available round the clock for spider removal. Or there's Brad - no veterinary quals and couldn't fight his way our of a wet paper bag but still has something to offer the frazzled breeder in need of a hug and happy to clean up whelping boxes
  12. As the newly appointed Buying Consultant for Whelping Supplies, I'm also recommending we introduce a Whelping Supplies Tech Support Package (WSTSP) In between sips of brandy laced hot choccie, after cleaning off your Twistie covered fingers, you'll be able to update DOL and your FB friends on this: Take photos of the litter with this: And with a glass of Bolly in one hand (or add a straw to the bottle if you prefer), after the successful whelping you can iron the kinks out of your back with this: For litter observation, we're also offering this:
  13. I'm pleased you didn't end up in the drink with him. That could have been a nightmare. Bloody dogs!!!!
  14. Shite. Scarey stuff. I bet your heart was in your mouth the whole time.
  15. So it's the hound ring where this self-important carrying on is happening? Great, nice work on welcoming the newbies folks. Note to self - give SA shows a BIG miss. PF will let you know how many toes BBJ and I stand on at News Year Eve. Hopefully folk will be reasonable. Good luck!
  16. I'd start obedience training now and continue for at least the next 18 months. Right now you should also be socialising the pants of your GSD - with people and with safe dogs in controlled situations.
  17. I've found the only thing that works is not to keep items on the benches that a dog might like. That's what the microwave is for. Behaviour that isn't rewarded (in this case self rewarded) is likely to decrease. You can speed up the decrease by adding an aversive (like the double sided tape) but the best and most enduring method of preventing it IMO is not to tempt the dog in the first place.
  18. I've often thought about this. I've been lucky with my two, but next breed I get will perhaps be a Basenji. They are not known for tolerance of strange dogs. Basically, I won't be getting one until I have a yard big enough to give it the room to stretch its legs in case that turns out to be the only place it can do it and feel safe. Someone used to bring a Chow to our dog park. I don't know why, really. She wasn't interested in the other dogs, she didn't ever break out of a walk, and she'd get peeved if a strange person tried to pat her. We have plenty of places around here you can take a dog for a nice on leash walk for exercise and a change in scenery. At the risk of being accused of breed bashing (again) some aren't renowned for their tolerance of dogs they know either. Primitive breeds bring a range of challenges. Pack dynamics will keep you on your toes. You'd be wise to opt for a female with your current dogs. PM me if/when you decide to take the plunge. I have a friend who's a breeder.
