  1. Oh honey you so are - and you shouldn't be offended by it. You are a respected rescuer and foster carer. You can comment and ask questions and get responses because to a rescuer you are "one of us". Being part of the "in crowd" doesn't have to be a bad thing - but it colours how you see the world. Don't for a moment think that there aren't other "in groups" around that folk can be members of and be similarly affected. ANKC registered breeders is another here. Hell, they have a closed forum!! HW I have never considered myself part of anything other than DOL as a whole... I love this forum and am so grateful to Troy for keeping it going. DOL has been there with so much advice and support over my years as a member in the palliative care threads over the years Ollie had cancer and rainbow bridge when he finally passed away. How many wonderful members kept me brave when my son was missing in the bush years ago.. The wonderful crew who frequent OT and give all manner of advice on everything from cooking to divorce... The photo forum where I get to pick the brains of all the great photographers and share all the Ziggy and foster dog pictures. I have recently discovered the training thread with Ziggy as he has a few issues that we are working on.. Also general for all the basic stuff and the breed threads... Nah I am not In the in crowd, just glad to be a part of it all :D ETA I think the breeders should have their own section.. After all this is a purebred dog forum. I think we are lucky to have so many other aspects to contribute to..
  2. Obviously you are part of the in-group and I don't see anything remarkable about two rescue groups working together. Isn't that what the forum is supposed to do? :) I am by no means part of any 'in' group... I find offense at you saying I am... I have fostered just 3 dogs in the last 7 months with the help of my wonderful mentor. I have been a member on DOL for many more years than I have been fostering, so how you could even conclude I am in a certain group is beyond me. 2 rescue groups working together is very remarkable... Anyone working together to save the dogs that can be rehomed is remarkable. Perhaps you don't get the response you want to your questions because of the way you ask them... :)
  3. I only foster for a well known rescue group and have never seen any snobbery there. every question I have ever asked has been answered as soon as it is noticed and the rescue coordinators are very helpful. From my experience they all work together to save as many as possible... Many times I have seen BDR and ARF work together, that is just an example, there are many more that could be named... In answering the OP, yes, I do every time I check out the urgent rescues... Sadly they cannot save them all...
  4. Thanks Cleo, I will try to call then. They only have a mobile phone number on the website... I am thinking it might be better to find a club in the ACT... Well it seems to be two steps forward and one step back. He went so well yesterday that I thought I would brave the dog park scenario again... Bad move... We did some training and went for a walk to remove some of the excited energy, or so I thought. He was pretty good when we first arrived but it took all of about 5 minutes for him to start ignoring me and getting into the other dogs face, so I leashed him and we left... I wonder if he will ever get that what he is doing is wrong? He is a submissive bully... He submits to all other digs if they have a go, no matter what size or gender. But then he seeks out the oldest, or least confident dog and does this thing where he gets right in their face, licking their chin. If the other dog tells him off, he goes it will come back again after a bit of a run around... I don't let it get to this stage, I leash him the first time he does it and we leave... I would love for him to be able to play with other dogs but he always singles out these particular dogs if they are there and they should not have to put up with it... I don't know what else to do.. I seem to have his attention at home but can't get it when we are out and there are other distractions... Do I just take him out for a few minutes and when he ignores me then take him home and then try again the next day? I haven't had a chance to see the trainer again but I think I need more help because I am obviously not doing something right...
  5. What adorable little nuggets. I am hopeless at breed guessing. It they could be staffy cross JRT (the one with the longer wire sort of coat)?
  6. Awesome thread... I was actually going to post something similar as my son is getting married in September this year and i am going to take the 7D along to take pictures... I think it is so wonderful that the DOLes who do this professionally are happy to share so many hints and tips with us... Thanks.
  7. Ziggy wouldn't throw up until about 3am after having it around 6pm after dinner... Otherwise he was fine, no other signs of discomfort or illness...
  8. I have just had a week away and have to admit that I honestly thought Ziggy would have been a bit of a bugger to train when I came home. What an awesome surprise I have had yesterday and today... He is so excited to train... And he did everything I asked every time.. His recall at one is really good and I really want to try him at the park again... More so for his socialization because Pippa left us over a week ago and he really seems to miss dog company.. I need a bit of a break for fostering and I really want to improve on my training skills and his training with this time away from fostering... I have called and left a message with the local dog club about 4 times now and they never return my calls... Unless I try one of the Canberra training groups as Queanbeyan won't respond. I think we are ready to join a group to train, instead of on our own and I know that he needs more than I know... I just can't say how impressed I was with him even today at our 3 smaller sessions.. He was more focused than I have ever seen him... Mind you the he would have only had the odd game of fetch while I was away. We do sits, downs, stays, fetch, back up etc..
  9. Cleo is very pretty... Our first foster dog was a kelpie cross.. Gus looked exactly like a kelpie but smaller.. He was so very smart and über cute... Do you do any herding or ability with Cleo? If fostering Gus taut me anything it was that kelpies need to be busy...
  10. Oh it is really pretty.. Congrats
  11. I have been a purebred dog owner all my life and now I rescue... I don't think that anyone who wants to own a purebred dog is a snob.. Some prefer to own purebred and some not. Then you get the others like me, I just sort of fell into rescue when Ollie died... At the pound one day I met and fell in love with our current dog, Ziggy... Ziggy is a staffy cross.. To me he is as perfect as any purebred dog I have owned over the years.. I don't agree with the old argument that if you buy a purebred pup, you are condemning another to death... Not everyone is cut out to rescue (you honestly never know what you are going to get with these dogs, some have been so mistreated it takes ages to bring them around)... With the purebred dogs you can be pretty sure of what you are buying, temperament, looks, trainability etc... No matter what you choose, it is still a lifetime commitment for the dogs involved...
  12. Thanks Huga, I have to admit I was a tad precious about it

  14. A dream holiday. Great photos, thanks for sharing them.
  15. I insured it before I left on my home contents list.. I just used my porteen bag and put it under the seat in front of me instead of in the overhead luggage space.
  16. I gave to my old Stafford without any issues at all but our new boy vomited it back within a couple of hours on the 3 occasions that I tried him with it. Make sure you give it to the dog on a full stomach..
  17. Good luck with the drug he didn't do well with... Glad to hear he is doingso well
  18. I advertised in the local paper and received lots of applicants.. I treated it like I was hiring someone... There were both good and not so good applicants. We settled on a third year law student and she was wonderful.. She ended up sitting for us a few times... Of all the ones we interviewed, the older uni students were the best...
  19. Isn't it lovely - I want one but also want a macro lens.. My sigma 17-70 IS also a macro lens maybe not in the same class as my canon 100mm macro, but it is still very good as an all round lens That sounds very tempting - even for a Canon snob like me
  20. Isn't it lovely - I want one but also want a macro lens.. Alas the funds are limited and I must be patient.
  21. I took her down last night - bawled like a baby all the way home.. I am sure she will be fine - they are a really lovely family and she deserves a great place to grow up and become everything she can be. I know they will give her that... But we all miss her so much this morning..
  22. You are both so right... I think it is the guilt of 'giving them away' when probably all they have known in their lives is instability. Pippy fits in so well here at home, she really could have been a foster failure but then I would not have space to help another as I can really only do one at a time. I think I need a rest from fostering for a bit after Pip though. I will help in other ways with donations and other things. Her new mum just called me to make a time to bring her home - I take my fosters to their new home and I leave (I find it easier for me to leave then watch them leave)... I am sure she will be loved, they are really nice people.. If not, she will come back here and even my son said, if she does, we should just keep her mum..
  23. The people that have had 3 meetings with Pip want to adopt her... Everything is right, they love her, they have a great yard, it all seems right but why does it feel so wrong... I am going to kiss her pretty face.. Her snoring and bed hogging... I hope they love her as much as we do, she really has wedged herself in our hearts...
