  1. I thought it was awesome to.. The news is always full of what dogs do wrong and I thought it was a nice chane to have such a great story...
  2. Story Link A loyal farm dog has been hailed as a hero after he was found guarding an abandoned baby boy. The dog was discovered nuzzled against the two-week old child who was left wrapped in blankets under a bridge in the West African town of Winkongo, Ghana, after it was left there by its mother. The unlikely pair were found by a search party which had set out to find the dog after it went missing the night before. Madam Azure, the district director of health, told local media outlet the Ghana News Agency that the child's umbilical cord was still attached and had been infected, but that the child was otherwise in good health. Local officials said it was unknown why the child had been abandoned, but that it had been placed in the care of the local health directorate until a new home could be found. I love these stories - it never ceases to amaze me just how loyal the majority of dogs are..
  3. I bought the 7D because the old 400D just did not get the dogs with the auto focus - they always came out not quite right (even if it was just a paw a bit blurry or an ear). The AF on the 7D is a million times better than on the old camera. It is better in lower light to. It also takes video. You can shoot in raw or jpeg. I think, just from my experience with the 7D, that it takes better pictures than the 400D - I don't think I am any better at taking pictures but having the better camera with more setting options really makes a difference to how my pictures are turning out. I am still working out all the settings and learning what it can do - it really is a whole lot of camera. It came with a 15-85mm lens and I find I am actually using that one more than the 50mm 1.8 that I used to use all the time - especially when shooting the dogs.
  4. Noire, I am so sorry to hear your news. They say we just know what the right course of action is. If you feel it is time to give her her wings then it probably is.. I had to give my old man his wings in October last year. It I nothing short of the most heartbreaking decision I have ever made, but it was the right one... We had an anesthetic first, which just made him go to sleep and we spent time alone with with him. Then our vet came back and we stayed with him, holding him... No matter how right it feels, we become so attached to our furry family members that it still hurts... I still don't know how long it all took, that afternoon is still a blur in my memory... I wish you strength and courage and send lots of cyber hugs for you and your girl...
  5. I love the AF on the 7D.. I went from a 400D to the 7D about a month ago and i am still in total awe of this camera... It is definitely more camera than I will ever need as a total novice but gee it is special and I feel lucky to have it..
  6. Oh god that is just heartbreaking... The poor family (poor dog).. There really are some very disturbed people on this earth...
  7. I think they miss us. My old stafford used to go nuts when I got back after leaving him at my mothers place or with friends... I usually only had to leave him from Thursday night until Sunday lunch time. The way he acted when he saw me was like he hadn't seen me in months... Our new boy is even more excited. We have only had Ziggy for about 7 months and got him when he was 6 months old but he looks at you like you have kicked him when you walk out the door away from him... And then he does the whole body wriggle when you come home, even if you have only been gone for 5 minutes... He is much more of a talker than the old guy was to, so follows you around woo wooing and woofing at us. I am sure your dogs will be missing you...
  8. Thanks people, I knew someone on here would know... I understand that council has to deal with nuisance or dangerous dog issues and that some rescues are not really as above board as most - still sad to think that politics may see some dogs worthy of new homes, never make it out... I hope they can make the council see sense - from all accounts (from my cousins wife) they are a decent rescue. But like I said, I don't really know them.
  9. I've just been contacted by channel 7 to be informed that at 10am this morning, at the council meeting they will be voting to stop giving dogs to Red Collar Rescue. This means that all the dogs in the pound will DIE as they don't give dogs to any other groups, and the RSPCA is always full! They have not even had the decency to contact us except for one phone call a week ago when I was told it was a done deal. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS. CAN ANYONE GO TO THE MEETING? they need to be held up for this... Facebook Link you will need to be logged in I have a friend up near Bundaberg who got her staffy girl through this rescue (I don't know much about them).. Can a council refuse to sell to anyone? You would think they would be glad for rescue taking on the unwanted dogs so they didn't have to put them down.
  10. Ziggy loves the green lipped mussels.. I have not tried the shark but might get some next time I am at Petstock..
  11. Any news? Hopefully they have had their fun and decided it is warmer at home...

  14. Amazing Tia... People like the one who you have quoted never cease to amaze me... They get on their high horse know jack shit about the situation (because lets admit, there really isn't enough information yet to make an informed opinion, other than to say how horrible the situation is)... And that moron is calling for the culling of all dogs, because honestly, almost any dog could potentially kill someone... God I hate people sometimes... The investigation isn't even complete yet. What the hell is a killer dog breed anyway? What happened to that little girl is beyond horrific. If they were my dogs, I would PTS... But there is possibly more to it all, who knows? perhaps the dogs have never been aggressive before, who knows what triggered the attack? There are so many what ifs in this story, we will just have to wait for the authorities to complete their work and let the public know what happened..
  15. Link The father of a six-year-old WA girl mauled by a pack of dogs says she was a "screaming ball of sand and blood" after being dragged 40 metres by the animals. Maya Wicksteed suffered deep wounds to her scalp and had large chunks of hair ripped out when she was attacked by the six dogs on a property in Baldivis, in Perth’s south, on Friday, the West Australian reported. The property owners threw themselves over the girl to try and protect her after the animals set upon her, her father Bruce said. "I realised Maya was lying underneath him and his wife was lying down in the path of the dogs to try to shield my daughter," Mr Wicksteed said. "I picked up a length of hose and just started whipping them and yelling." The dogs scattered, allowing him to pick up his daughter and run to a nearby house, with three Bull Arabs chasing him. The young girl is now in a stable condition at Princess Margaret Hospital after undergoing cosmetic surgery. Mr Wicksteed was working on a vehicle on the property when the attack took place. He is now calling for stricter restrictions on Bull Arabs. "These dogs are bred for a purpose and they are bred for hunting and killing pigs," he said. "They're a killing machine and if a dog can't differentiate between a little girl and a pig, there's an issue." The three Bull Arabs, which belong to the son of the property owners, have been taken by local rangers and may be destroyed, while the three other dogs remain on the property. 16. Trifecta that is the same principles of the diet that I used with Ollie.. Obviously a very different cancer but I I do believe it makes a difference. Ollie liked green tea, I would make me and him a cup and let his cool.. He loved it... The high doses of vit c will help with general well being, it is a great 'tonic' for dogs. We used the 5 mushroom drops for years. The flax oil can be given easier with sardines or tuna as it helps hide the flavour a bit. As well as mixed into cottage cheese. Thanks for the update, glad to hear it is all going well...
  17. But even with all the campaigns we still have drunk drivers killing people, we still have a massive drug problem. If people dont want BSL to fully come into force then they need to come up with something better than just saying we need to educate. I'm sorry but it wont be enough. Yes we do still have drunk drivers and drug issues but at least we are all more aware of these things today than we were 20 years ago when there was nothing about them. We need education but sadly you can't and won't change some people and the way they see dogs. But hopefully you could get the point across to others and this would hopefully reduce the incidence of dog attacks... I don't know what the answer is... I am not sure there is one answer to resolve the whole problem.
  18. It would be nice to see the government step in and do a safety campaign like they do with drink driving and drugs but with dogs... How to stuff like in shmoos post #3 Wouldn't it be nice if all dog owners had to attend a minimum intro training class..
  19. I think it's hard to tell once they get to about 12 months old.. The pound told us our staffy boy was 12 months old and when the vet checked him out, he said no way... His testicles hadn't dropped and his canine teeth were down all the way, so we estimated he was actually only about 6 months old. The same with a kelpie cross foster guy we had, the pound said he was just 12 months but the vet thought he was much older, so we changed his estimated age to 18 months.. Your guy is gorgeous. Maybe he was older than thought to be as he hasn't grown much while you have had him.
  20. I am sorry to hear of your news... There is a lot to be said for diet and holistic treatment to make them comfortable and keep them as well as possible.... Send a pm to cavNrott, her girl Sophie had the same thing... She is a wealth of knowledge on osteosarcoma. Wishing you and your girl all the best...
  21. So very sorry for your loss... RIP Jay Jay..
  22. Some dogs really guts their food down, they often swallow air while doing so and this is what ends up coming out the other end, along with gases produced from the food breaking down in ther digestive system.. I have a dog that farts about an hour or so after each meal and it can be pretty offensive... My old stafford had cancer and some other issues and he was well known for clearing a room at any time of day or night... Each dog is different, some fart more than other and I really do think what food, the way they eat it and the activity they do all combine to give them gas...
  23. How very sad and disappointing... I wouldn't care if my sister knew it was me or not... Honestly your sister should not own an animal if this is how she treats them... I only hope she doesnt have kids... If she was my sister, I would be reporting her or better going and getting the dog and having it seen to myself... Send me her details and I will report her... The animal needs treatment.
  24. Even if you call the pound and tell them you have found the pup but it is sick and you would prefer to keep it with you until an owner comes forward - take a pic to the pound, so they can at least have it on their register... Your friend has a kind heart but they are not doing the right thing by the pup - I would be devastated if it was my pup and I couldn't find it because someone just decided to keep it... The little one is only 8 weeks (it looks older to me, more like 3 months but that is not the issue) and has medical issues - perhaps the its owner is working on these things and the pup is undergoing treatment (but won't be getting it now, as it is not at home).. Get your friend to contact the pound with a pic in the very least, so if the pups owners are looking for it, they can find it... If no one comes forward, your friend can then buy the pup, get it microchipped in his name and it will all be above board... Better to be safe and legal with these things.
