He was using gloves and stuff on the shows that I watched, maybe it is a different vet?

And if a dog is in rescue for months, should the rescue just wear the cost of the food, worming nd other general costs associated with owning a dog? What about the cost of toys, collar and lead? I didn't read the OP has saying Rescue should not make money or charge x for their dogs, but rescues should not place different values, significant differences, between a heinz mut, and pure bred. I agree, there is a hypocrisy to it; save a life, breeders breed for money, dont buy from a breeder while there are dogs in need of a home kind of thing. Not sure why you have selectively quoted that small part of my post, I wrote a whole lot more than that?? My point was simply that rescue should be able to charge what they like, if they make money on dog, you can bet they have lost money on the previous few... I actually think making money to put back into rescue is a good thing. Rescues that can support (financially) their foster carers have a better chance at keeping and gaining more carers, leading to more dogs rescued... Not for profit does not mean, don't make a profit.. It means the funds go back into the business to promote and increase what the business does. Purebred dogs are worth more than cross breed mutts. Look in the local paper. You can pick up a staffy cross from free to good home to a couple of hundred dollars.. You are not going to get a purebred stafford for that (just a basic example). That goes for all breeds and their crosses. You pay more for purebred dogs. I believe there will always be those that want purebred dogs, they have an idea of temperament, health etc that they can expect from that breed. There is a place for breeders and a place for rescuers... I do not believe that people should not buy a pup or dog from a breeder if there are dogs to be rescued..Nor have I ever indicated this. (just answering your last statement)

And if a dog is in rescue for months, should the rescue just wear the cost of the food, worming nd other general costs associated with owning a dog? What about the cost of toys, collar and lead? You know it's not just the desexing cost, it costs money to get them out of the pound, we often have to buy crates, extra bedding, toys, collar, lead, the cost of advertising the dogs, printing adoption papers and council change over paperwork, the cost to fundraise as well. These costs add up over time. If rescue can recoup some funds on a purebred or 'prettier' dog why not because I guarantee there are plenty of dogs where they lose money. I know of a few dogs that are still in foster care after many months, just add up the costs for your own dog over that time, add on desexing, training, fleaing, worming and food etc. Then consider the dogs that come into care that when tested have issues like heartworm and the cost to treat that... It's not just the cost to desex and some food. I know as a foster carer I give my fosters the same barf food, premium kibble, toys and medication like comforts and advantix that I give my own dog... If they don't make money they can't continue to rescue..

They live out the back of nowhere with a large farming community, sometimes they have to make do in the worst of circumstances.. This man saves animals when it really looks like they are not going to make it. He is blunt and straight to the point and he has a surgery, where his wife is the manager and his son helps out...

Just watching this amazing vet show on foxtel. This man is amazing... Tonight he has removed an eye from a dog that was hit by a car, treated a kid (goat) that was kicked by a horse and the owner thought it was blind. treated a little Chi that was really sick and they first thought of parvovirus but luckily it wasn't. He just treated a tiny Cav puppy that the owner bought from a puppy farm that was sick. He then went on to explain about puppy farms and "designer" dogs and how bad puppy farms are. Now he is treating a goat who won't eat. Last week he put the uterus of a cow who just had a calf back in and sewed it there and the cow lived... Sadly a young lass bout her pet pig in to be euthed by Dr Pol's other vet and that was really sad She also treated the same pitbull mix two days in a row for 2 run ins with a porcupine... Hopefully he learns motto go after them again...

I know Rappie is a vet and I think we have a few vet nurses as well.

Heads Up So Many Dogs At Das

Some people are just a waste of oxygen. -
How very sad... My condolences to his family...

My old boy used to get it in winter time. An injection a week for 3 weeks in a row, would last him all winter. Cost from memory was $45 total, with no consult fee charged... I think it worked wonders and you could really tell the difference..

Just Volunteered To Foster
Staffyluv replied to Lisey's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I think my biggest learning curve was expecting the foster dogs to behave like my dogs did.. They don't, they are often stressed from being in the pound, then being desexed (if needed), being handled by so many different people.. I think some handle it better than others but it takes a week, often more before most start to relax. Ask lots of questions.. If you have a mentor within your foster group, they are the best person to go to.. The manual that T posted is awesome... Mostly, just enjoy your fosters while you have them... -
How horrible.. RIP Sarge.

Ollie dog used to sleep with me.. :D He also had a trampoline bed that had a queen size mink blanket on it. He loved curling up on that... I think a bed soft enough and not to high or to low, so they can sort of walk on and off, instead of jumping up or down makes life easier... I know a few people that use electric blankets for the old dogs and keeping them warm makes it easier on the old joints.. Moderate exercise is important to as the old saying of use it or lose it applies to our pups as well as us. Ollie slowed down and only wanted to walk about half an hour but he still enjoyed it.

OMG !! Ground the poor dogs teeth down. Jesus thats disgusts me. How very cruel & barbaric can one be. Trouble with this whole extremely horrific situation is there are a lot of very cruel people out there with not a compassionate bone in their body that will pay very big bucks to watch this "entertainment". With no regard for the dogs or their welfare, its all about the cash. Just sickens me. They need to be stopped. A few years ago we had the misfortune to have a friend bring a friend to one of our BBQs. This friend of our friend was talking about a dog fight that he was invited to out Yass way. He said they move it around all the time so the police don't find it. He was telling everyone how they duct tape the bait dogs mouth shut so it can't defend itself... Needless to say our friend apologized for his mate as he had no idea his mate was involved with that sort of thing.. I sat there and pumped him for info, which he didn't really give me anything I could use. I still went to the police and told them what he had said. They told me that they knew of it but were yet to catch anyone related to dog fighting... It is disgusting and so are the people involved in it.. It just breaks my heart to think of any animals involved

This is Pippa... The longer time goes on, the more I regret letting her go.. I know she has a great home but I still wish I had adopted her myself... Not the camera again by Jodie Moore Photos, on Flickr Just a quick update: Her adopted family have to move and they can't take her with them - so she is coming home to me:) I am hoping she will just fit in right where she left off but she is a full grown dog now and maybe her personality has changed a bit. I am just a little excited though

We had a guy knock on our door to ask about our boy a awhile back, so I got decent locks for all the gates and he now stays inside most of the time... I had sensor lights installed. I was going to get the cameras installed to but decided not to. We were lucky, the guy has not been back. If I were you, I would instal cameras, sensor lights and get big locks for all gates. I would also keep the dog inside from now on... I hope the thefts stop.. It is just terrifying to think someone would steal a beloved pet.

We used mylanta or Ollie and then went onto carafate (vet script supplied by chemist much cheaper) He also used a prescription called omprezole (acimax brand from memory) when it got worse before he passed away...
-
It's a hard call sometimes. Vets are not cheap and taking them every time you 'think' something is wrong can be expensive... When Ollie was first dxd with mast cell tumours, I had a big hate session with myself for not pushing for a fine needle aspirate sooner on the first one that showed up... But it looked just like a harmless wart..

Oh that is so sad..

If it was a one off thing, like just last night for a minute or two, then I wouldn't worry about it. However, if it becomes a regular sort of thing, say every few hours or at the same time each day then I would certainly get it checked just to ease my own mind...

Staffy Food Recommendations (skin Problems)
Staffyluv replied to mooki's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
awesome advice... -
Our old stafford used to get hives and swelling if he was stung by a bee. His escalated and he couldn't breathe, so he had to have adrenalin as well as antihistamine injected at the vet.. He also used to get the hives as a result from the type of cancer that he had... Mast cell tumours release histamine and he needed to take antihistamine tablets every day. He was on polaramine from the chemist. This worked fine and once his dose was sorted, he rarely had a histamine release from the tumours that required anything further than an extra dose of polaramine.

Exactly what Sheridan says.. The best food is what you dog does best on.. I use barf patties of a night and he was on Nutro puppy but wouldn't eat the adult one, so I changed to royal canin and he will only eat that sometimes. Mostly now he gets a turkey neck or chicken necks or wings of a morning and his barf of a night. I leave 1 cup of dry there a day and sometimes he eats it and sometimes he doesn't. He also gets sardines in oil a few times a week instead of his normal morning food... I really think he only eats the kibble when he is bored, as opposed to hungry...

My boy has tuna in olive oil as well as sardines for a change. If I have salmon, he will eat that to (bit expensive but he only has some when I do)...
