I carry an often wet and muddy 27kg staffy mix. He is rough on everything he comes into contact with. The real BSB is awesome - my back seat of my fairly new corolla is still in mint condition. No hair, mud, water or dog vomit gets through it.

Exercising Reactive Dogs Thread
Staffyluv replied to megan_'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks Snook. Thanks Cos, it has been trial and error - one step forward and two back sometimes but I really feel like we are getting somewhere now. It is sort of like the light just went on one day and it really is easier. He doesn't even pull like he was. We still have work to do all the time but I think we always will - on the distraction stuff but he is so much better and to be able to do an obedience assessment with 18 other dogs all sitting on the edge of the ring waiting their turn, was nothing short of amazing and I am so very proud of how far we have come. Thanks teekay. Wow, what a nightmare for you and Luka. It is so scary when we end up in situations that we know our dogs react in sometimes. -
Poor little girl.. RIP Gracie

Removing The Aged Dog And Palliative Care Forums

Maybe we need a disclaimer up there stating that if your thread doesn't get a response, try posting elsewhere. Or if you don't get a response, it doesn't mean that no one cares, it's just that they don't have anything constructive to offer.. I have honestly never seen a thread in there that is looking for sympathy - all the ones I have read, have been looking for advice. If I can offer advice, I will, if I can't then I don't respond. There is no point in me posting my sympathies when they are actually after advice on health care or suggestions on diet etc. -
I'm fully aware that HA and DA are different things but my point here is - can you GUARANTEE that this dog would not have done the same to a hand that came through the fence? No, none of us could. I'm saying that something would have been done if it had been a child rather than a dog that was attacked in that way. Don't misconstrue what I'm saying. I euthanased a dog in 2011 that I'd rescued for being not only DA but also HA. Dogs CAN have both forms of aggression but of course I know that because they have one doesn't mean they have the other. Some people don't know that, usually standard dog owners. Again - you and others are hypothesising what might or might not happen.. It wasn't a child, so it didn't happen.. No you can't guarantee the behaviour of any animal (human included) - but it is POINTLESS to sit on a forum and say what if it was a child.. It wasn't and this happens every time there is a dog attack.. More kids are harmed by humans than dogs.. This thread isn't about what might have happened - it is about what did happen. A little dog was killed because he had his nose in the wrong place at the wrong time. As I said before, I doubt unless there is another witness to the incident that we will ever know the truth. The owner of the poodle is hardly going to admit her dog was off lead (suggested elsewhere in the thread) or that he had his nose inside the other dogs fence (again suggested elsewhere in the thread).. I don't know what happened any more than any one else does, we were not there and adding fuel to the fire like 'what if it had been a child' is a moot point.. I am as entitled to my opinion as you are - it is an open forum.. I choose to not read anything into it that hasn't been reported. I choose to be factual, not make up stuff that might or might not happen.
-
Yet again some resorting to the 'what if it had been a child'.. It wasn't a child and most dogs that are dog aggressive or even territorial don't attack kids.. HA is a totally different thing to DA.. We all know this but it keeps coming up every time a dog is attacked by another dog. On the flip side, my heart is just broken for the poor little poodle and his owner. If it was me, I would have nightmares for a very long time.. It is going to be difficult to apportion blame in this case unless there were other witnesses that actually saw one dog or the other come through the fence..

Removing The Aged Dog And Palliative Care Forums
Staffyluv replied to Sheridan's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
In my opinion there are way too many non dog related threads on DOL. Often when using the 'view new content' option there are so many threads about non dog related issues that one could be forgiven for thinking it's a general chat forum instead of a pure bred dog forum. If people need the palliative care sub forum they'll find it or someone will point them in the right direction. The palliative care sub forum is a place where we can receive support and advice from others who have experience in caring for a terminally ill dog. The palliative care sub forum should not be a place for general chit chat or for diagnosis of an unknown or suspected health issue (as has happened in the past). It is a sub forum for those who are caring for a dying dog. Is there actually any general chit chat at all in the palliative care forum? I doubt there's general chit chat and trust it will remain so. What happened is that there was a request for opinions on the possible health issue with a sick dog that had not been diagnosed by a vet. This request was followed by comments explaining the exact nature of palliative care. I think this thread should probably be in the Forum Suggestions forum. I haven't noticed any general chit chat in there. Usually someone comes in and starts a thread about their dog and their story - then if others have advice or experience, we offer it. I know Ollie's thread holds a lot of really useful info on diet for cancer dogs, also out chemo protocol and holistic supplements. It basically has our whole 6 year journey of living with and treating his mast cell cancer. I remember Sophie's thread had much of the same. -

Yeah they do that.. Constantly test and amaze us  The morning of Zig's obedience assessment he was being a right turd but in a playful way - he just wanted to play and even the assessor said to me after, that he was watching us and thought we would be back to do that course again. But once Zig got to the edge of the ring, he heeled in and never looked back. It was totally awesome and although I knew he could do it, his distraction level that morning had been very high. -

That is great news snook, Justice is doing so well. It is such a head swell when they do something that you have been aiming for, for a long time.. -
Same, I used to joke with him every time I took Ollie up there that I was adding to our West Queanbeyan Vets share portfolio.. Now I am hardly ever there - I think Zig has been 3 or 4 times since being desexed in November 2011.
-
Haha, he is a great vet. He seems to really like Zig, he is always patting him and saying what a nice boy he is. He was awesome with Ollie and everything we went through.
-
Thanks Sheridan, I am just going to wait and see how he goes for a couple of weeks with no heavy exercise.. Hamish said he didn't seem to show any discomfort at all with the manipulation he did today, so hopefully it is just a simple sprain. Looks like we will be doing lots of training and it might be time to learn a trick or two..
-
The lad got the all clear at the vets. He thinks it is probably just a sprain as he can't feel anything out of the ordinary. So he has some anti inflams and he is only getting on lead walks for a couple of weeks to rest the leg. Then I can give him a bit of a run to see how he goes, if he pulls up favouring the leg again then they will do x-rays and we will go from there. He went right over him, feeling his spine, pulling and pushing his back legs and even checked his ears etc out and he was happy that Zig seems to be very healthy. Zig showed no signs of his leg being sore at all with all this pulling and pushing.. Hopefully that is the end of it.

One of the most amazing things that I discovered with Ollie dog (and Sophie) was that they don't seem to know or care that they are terminally ill.. As dogs, they live in the moment - so eventually I did learn to just love each day that he woke up and wanted to go for a walk or eat his breakfast. Wishing you the best of luck with her ish, send a PM to cNr as she was on the forum the other day - I am sure she would be happy to help. Ollie's thread has loads of information in it as well - more towards MCT than osteosarcoma but still a lot of diet related stuff might be helpful.

Could You Possibly Swap Your Dog For...
Staffyluv replied to Kajirin's topic in General Dog Discussion
I wouldn't swap my lad for anything.. I wouldn't have swapped Ollie dog for anything or Louis or any of the other dogs we have had over the years.. To me they become very much a part of the family. -

I don't think most people do sas, unless they need it. I also think the only ones to reply are those who have been through something and have used the resources the threads have to offer.. I never used to frequent the training forum either until I got Zig because Ollie had no issues with training (unlike the new lad).. -

Arthritis (catrophen Injection)
Staffyluv replied to GraceMcC's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yep used it for years on my old stafford and it was awesome.. Fish oil supplements can be beneficial (personally I prefer to just feed fish like sardines, salmon and tuna in oil a couple of times a week). -
13 Yr Old Dog On Gumtree
Staffyluv replied to LouBon's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
She was reduced from $250 for quick sale in 1 day. I see it all the time and it's starting to really get to me these last few weeks. I just saw it on one of our local buy, swap, sell FB pages - the Queanbeyan one. Thankfully the Canberra one that I use most, has banned the sale of animals (or giving them away) on their page. Edited to add - I agree, it just breaks my heart to see such beautiful creatures discarded but I also realise that sometimes life throws us curve balls and the dog would be better off rehomed. As this one is a stafford that they don't have time for - I think it is much better they rehome her than just dump her in a backyard. Staffords (like most dogs) don't do well without human company. -

Staffyluv replied to LouBon's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I realise there are circumstances in people's lives that require them to rehome their beloved animals but the first one listed in this thread is beyond me. Surely the owner knew more than 2 weeks ago she was going overseas? To threaten in an ad - one way or another she goes, is just disgusting. The ad for the 3 year old staffy for $150 isn't that bad - I would rather see someone put a price on a dog on facebook than give them away for free to deter the less than desirables from getting their hands on nice dogs. Whenever I see a free to good home on facebook, I often send a message suggesting putting a fee on the dog so they only get real enquiries. They can always drop the fee for the right home. -
Ish I am sorry. I just went looking for Sophie's thread - it had so much information in it as cavNrott treated her with diet, supplements and chemo (from memory) but I can't find the thread. It was here in the palliative care section but all I could find was her rainbow bridge thread. Sophie had osteosarcoma in her jaw. Maybe pm cNr to see if she still has some info as she did a wonderful job with palliative care for Sophie and she lived much longer than was expected. We are in Canberra and used All Natural Vet Care in Sydney, who liaised with our vet and oncologist when Ollie had MCT. We used a lot of supplements including but not limited to Anti-Ox, Lymphodran, Chinese Herbs, Five Mushroom Drops, Flax Oil, Loads of Vitamin C, Fish oil etc. Everything we used is in Ollie's thread on Mast Cell Cancer - here in this forum but it is very different to osteosarcoma, so may not be of much help. A good holistic vet will work with your vet and oncologist for the best outcome. Wishing you all the best

I see where you are coming from now. A lot of the threads in there are just support threads, they don't actually have treatments and progress discussed. It is a hard call, on the one hand it would be a shame to lose the threads like Ollie's and Sophie's that do discuss the extensive treatments, diets and their progress. But as you said, threads sitting there for a few days before anyone notices them isn't right either. -
