  1. He has to come and stop and sit in front of me and look at me.. Then he gets his ball or a treat most times (he will do it with just a good boy and a good scruff up)..
  2. Hey guys, I have a quick question.. Zig's recall has been 'pretty' good for a long time now but last week (and ever since) he started this thing where, when I recall him, he runs straight past me and keeps going.. Why would he start that now, after months of doing so well? If we go to the park together (just him and I) early of a morning and I take him off lead and practice recall he is spot on.. When we went to obedience and we did long lead recall, he was awesome. We have just started off lead recall at obedience and all of a sudden he is running right past me (even if I have treats on offer). Anyone have any suggestions? Do I need to go back to the start and keep him on a short lead and get him to stay and recall on a short lead and then go up to a long lead again - that seems pointless when he already knows it??
  3. I live for the day of reliable recall with Zig.. He has times when he is spot on and then out of the blue, it will take two calls (then he is leashed and taken home).. His newest thing is to recall but run straight past me.. He only started this last week at obedience but he has done it at the two training sessions we have done at home (without distraction)..
  4. The desexed female (8 months old) humps my 2 year old staffy here.. Everyone has their preferences - male or female. My personal preference is for male dogs (I just find them easier all round).
  5. Agree with others - the dog obeys first command, first time.
  6. I feed kibble and raw these days - because it is convenient. No issues here at all.
  7. I would love to see some, if and when you have time :)
  8. Rozzie do you have photos of the brindle ones? This is amazing, I thought they only came in yellow, black and chocolate..
  9. This is Zig's second collar from Ruthless Leather - it is a martingale and I bought a lead to go with it - the 3 in 1 lead. Zigs new collar 11.12 by Jodie Moore Photos, on Flickr This is his first collar - again I bought a matching lead, just a normal length lead with brass fittings to match the collar. Ziggy 26.11.12 by Jodie Moore Photos, on Flickr I love this gear and I had my doubts about it as my boy is always in mud or water.. In summer time, he swims in the local pond daily and once a fortnight or so, I simply give it a condition with the cream that Ruthless gave me and all the gear stays looking like it is brand new. It is soft leather and the leads are so lovely to hold.
  10. I had a Cavvy - answered as best I can but haven't had a whole lot of experience with little soft dogs.. We have 2 of these at obedience, one is a really nice little dog the other is a real yapper :)
  11. Jed, one of Ollie's was a wart as well - on his toe. They took the wart but didn't get clear margins. MCT is a $hit of a disease - they come in so many varieties of tumour. They are not all just a lump under the skin, they can be a wart, something that feels like a lipoma or another one of Ollie's was like a small sore that he had licked.
  12. Sorry to hear that he has Mast Cells present. There is a definite link between 'allergic' dogs and MCT.. Clear margins is simply clear tissue around the tumour site (to see that the tumour has not invaded those tissues). My old stafford had MCT and after his initial surgery, there were no clear margins on a grade 2 tumour. However Ollie had multiple tumours removed. He went back in 3 days after the initial surgery to try and get clear margins on the biggest tumour - this wasn't successful and they also biopsied some lymph nodes near the tumour and they also contained mast cells. He was originally give 12-18 months with chemo to prolong his life. We did 6 months of chemo (there are many new and better treatments, Palladia being one). New tumours arrived and although they were aspirated to see if they were in fact MCT, we did not remove them. He was holistically treated as well with supplements to help him cope with chemo (which really isn't as traumatic for dogs as it is for humans as they simply don't give dogs the level of dosage the give to humans). Ollie lived 6 and a half years after his initial diagnosis. There is loads more treatments now than when he was treated.
  13. is this a recent thing ? I worked amongst labs for almost 20 yrs at one stage ..and while I saw some with a thicker coat/and some ruff/ waves down the spine ..there were never any with hair actually longer/curly . Interesting :) I agree.. I had no idea they came in long coats.
  14. Thanks guys.. I feel sorry for the people buying these pups are purebred labs but if they want to pay $100 deposit for a dog of dubious heritage, who am I to say anything. I would like to but without sufficient lab knowledge behind me and the fact that I can't be bothered to argue with silly people prepared to part with their money.
  15. What hope is there when the vets can't even be bothered to get it right?
  16. Why they are on a public page. I am not naming anyone or have said where it is from (from what I can tell, she isn't even local to where I live as she is offering transport of these pups).
  17. Had to add these pics from the ad.. Looks like the mother is a long haired something..
  18. She just told another person asking about them that they were at the vets last week (born on the 15/8 in her original post) and he said that the hips and elbows don't come any better.. But neither mum or dad have had their hip and elbows scored (by her own admission).
  19. These are definitely lab pups in the picture.. The usual crap sprouted, mum and dad have never had hip problems, beautiful pups..
  20. I didn't think so, I had a look at the dogs 101 thread on labs and it says there coat is short.. But you never know.. Thanks
  21. Just curious as I saw an ad for black and blonde purebred labs. Mum is a pure english lab and is a long hair and dad is a short hair.. I had never heard of long hair labs before, can someone that knows the breed let me know please :)
  22. PM, it can take some dogs longer to adjust to changes than others. I imagine this is a huge upheaval for an older dog. Some dogs adjust more quickly than others and I would think that the average adjustment time was at least three weeks for a new dog to get the flow of the new home, the rules and who sits where.. I tend to walk my dog with foster dogs a lot in the beginning because, I think it was Mita who suggested, this creates a bond in the pack structure when they are working (walking) together. The behaviourist I used with Ziggy last year has many dogs and takes them all on a walk every day to maintain the harmony she has in the group. Just from what you have posted (and I could be wrong as I can't see them together), Perry is just enforcing her position in the group and once she realises that the new girl isn't a risk to her position, she will most likely accept her being there (whether they end up friends or not remains to be seen). As others have said, feeding should always be separate. Good luck with your new girl and I hope you get the harmony in the group soon.
  23. The Queanbeyan Chronicle This was a group of pets, according to those that witnessed the attack.. Apparently they killed 7 goats and injured others. There is one photo in the newspaper and they say it is a cattle dog cross and the story says one of the other dogs is believed to be a golden retriever. The RSPCA set a vet tent to tend to the animals that needed it. Sorry I couldn't copy and post as the link goes to an online version of the paper and the print function wouldn't work for me.
  24. Cute... My first foster dog, Gussy, used to play fetch by himself. Mr adorable Gussy smiling by Jodie Moore Photos, on Flickr Ziggy used to watch him and he bounces his ball and catches it himself..
