Best Golden Retriever Dry Food
Staffyluv replied to 85vicmat's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The best food for your dog, regardless of breed, is the food they do the best on. Each dog is an individual and what one GR does well on, may be terrible for another GR. I personally don't like science diet but each to their own. I dish up a mix of Earthborn Holistic kibble (either the salmon one of the primitive one), barf patties or human grade roo, raw meaty bones like lamb flaps, chicken carcasses, turkey necks and wings. My lad also gets cottage cheese, raw eggs (shell and all) and the odd pigs ear. This is what he does well on. It can take a while to work, out what your dog does well on and it is all trial and error. There is varying schools of thought on changing diets, some think just change it and others think it is better to change it slowly... Congrats on the new puppy :) -
I posted that on my facebook a couple of years ago when I lost Ollie dog - it is really beautiful, isn't it.

A Topic I Read On Fb About ' Rescues'
Staffyluv replied to Angeluca's topic in General Dog Discussion
yeah just made my intentions made i had seen a thread on here about fosters ans rescue organizations sayin something about vet discounts, not necessarily the owners but the fosters and rescue groups. I understand that those groups usually dip in their own pockets to look after dogs and i tip my hat to them. but is it expected of vets to be charitable and if they say no do they loose the asker's business and are frowned at or worse? As a foster carer for dogs that need to be rehomed, I pay my own fosters vet bills. It is my choice to do it - if funds are low, then I simply don't foster for a while and when things pick up, I foster again.. My last foster girl had mange. Our vet charged for the medicine and gave me the appointment and check ups for free - I never asked for this but they did know that she was a foster dog. It was very much appreciated. I don't think it is 'expected' that vets give a discount to rescue organisations - but I do think it is very much appreciated. Also there are vets who don't discount for dogs bought into foster care and there are vets that do. -
If you ask your vet, they will most likely write you a prescription for a human alternative (if there is one). If not, you could try another vet for the script. My vet used to do it for tablets my old Stafford was on when he had cancer. Just so you know, vets don't have the buying capacity that chemists do - they just don't get the bulk discounts that chemists receive from pharmaceutical companies. So charge accordingly - as Danois said, there really isn't much made out of vet meds.

Does Anyone Use One Of Those Auto Insect Spray Units?
Staffyluv replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have one on a ledge in the laundry that faces the back door and it works a treat.. I get the odourless, inside one and I don't even notice it. -
That is a pretty standard type of tattoo for a desexed male. My old SBT had one but it wore off over the years and you couldn't see it by the time he was about 8 years old. My new guy had one when he was desexed at 6 months (he will be 3 in April) and you can't see it at all already.

I think $400 is pretty good. You could also ask any handy welders you know to knock one up.

Facebook page link This guy builds the most amazing runs for animals - I have seen one of his runs installed and they pretty good. He is over this way (Canberra) but I thought they might give you an idea of what you can build yourself.

^^ What Sandra777 said.. The rare blue staffy is most definitely not rare any more.. I knew they were prolific but had no idea that there were so many 'blue' litters registered compared to other colours. We have a gorgeous little blue boy at our obedience club and he has something wrong with his eyes - they look like the corner of his eye has overgrown half his eye and is all red. I think they call it 'cherry eye'??? He has to have surgery but for some reason the owners are waiting - no idea why and I didn't ask.. He really is a lovely little guy (not one of those grossly over sized staffords, that seems to be the go for a lot of blue breeders).

All dogs and chickens that are or have been here eat the whole thing..

I give Ziggy mostly roo of a night time. He gets his fat from the lamb he gets of a morning. He also has other stuff like fruit and veg, cottage cheese, yoghurt, eggs. Edited to add that all meat for pets in this house is human grade meat - I can't handle the smell or texture of any of the pet meats/minces..

Dogs most do benefit from herbs - my old stafford lived 6 years with Mast Cell Tumors, thanks to 6 months of chemo and then a few years of being holistically with herbs.. The canine oncologist said with chemo, he only expected Ollie to live 12-18 months.. 6 years!! Pretty beneficial if you ask me.

$615 is nothing compared to the last foster I had through - she needed ongoing medical treatment for mange and infection from scratching. Not to mention desexing, vaccinating, training, collar, lead, food, bedding.. I think people will pay what they deem is fair for the dog they want.. I have no problem with rescues or pounds charging whatever they want for the dogs in their care. They have to recoup funds on the more adoptable dogs because they have to let the less adoptables go cheaper.. I have a rescue boy and got him for the pound price and had him desexed via my vet myself.. So he was cheap but in all honesty, I would have paid $615 for him the day I found him - because I wanted him...

Does it come in tablet form for dogs? I bought a big container of the powder RHV and Zig won't touch anything that it is on or in. I have tried mixing it with yoghurt, cottage cheese, his barf patties and his sardines, with no luck. One sniff and he walks away and won't eat. He drops weight so quickly (even missing a meal he looks all ribby), that I am not game to make him just go without until he eats it.

Thanks for that Dyzney.

Just saw this but based on their info - they may not be ANKC registered, just registered with the QLD CCC Link to their details on Pet Directory That is about all I can find on them - looks like they sell most of their dogs via gumtree (there were a few old gumtree ads - none of the dogs sold had hip or elbow scores (not that, that means anything, it is just noteworthy)..
-
I don't use soup bones, I find them to be very sharp.. I also don't use marrow bones as the higher fat, with all the marrow, tends to upset his tummy. I tend to use lamb ribs (and beef ribs), turkey necks are also great for bigger dogs.

I really like this bit of Huski's post..

Over my life, we have had dogs from breeders, BYBers and pounds... My current guy, Ziggy, is a pound mutt and after a bit of a rocky start with training - we are fine.. He has excelled at obedience, far beyond my expectations, has a wonderful temperament and really is a joy to have around.. I wouldn't recommend taking a dog directly from a pound to a novice dog owner - I would encourage them to a breeder or a rescue..
-
Awesome breed.. Growing up we had 2 dobes, both from good breeders. Both boys had the most amazing temperaments and really were family dogs. Our first guy, Dylan, was from a Gold Coast breeder and he was tall and very lean. Our second guy, Benson, was from a local breeder up north and he was more thick set than Dylan was.. Research for good breeders and the will tell you everything you need to know..

Yep, totally agree.. I wish everyone knew the basic signs of stress in dogs.. This reminds me of another video that was doing the rounds not long ago - a lab and a little kids and the kid was trying to avoid the dog and the dog was putting its paws on the kid - it was pushed as 'beautiful' and 'cute'.. I don't think either video is cute.
