LP, you are a genius... I have been researching Ollies condition (Oxalate stones) and if you what you say is correct about the lack of bones in a diet, then this is why he suffers from the stones... He has always been a fussy dog and refused bones. So has never really had them. His diet has always been human grade meat (chicken, turkey, roo and beef) with veges (usually a 50/50mix) all stewed up... I am going to ask the vet about this. All he made need to go back to real food instead of the Hills Science diet is to eat bones included in his meal... (He hates it and only eats when he is absolutely starving) I have been reading about this stuff for months now and never put to two and two together (the need for bones and not just meat)... It is a personal choice not to use 'pet mince'... I personally think the stuff (mince of any description) is rubbish and would not use it... But that is just my opinion. :D I used human quality meat (actually never mince at all) - Chicken, turkey, roo and beef. As well as an assortment of veges, all cooked up together... I guess I am just fussy what I feed my pooch... Cheers Jodie

Ewww are you really giving him pet mince??? Do him a favour and get some real mince from the butcher - human quality, the good stuff... That pet mince is terrible stuff (usually with way too much fat in it)... Hope he is picking up soon... Cheers Jodie

Ollie is prone to oxalate stones and he takes one 50mg tablet morning and night, only when he is in pain... From what I read here is it a medication for arthritis or is it a pain management drug (I thought it was the latter)... TIA Jodie

What you have written seems to make sense, however... All the documentaries that I have watched on wolves, shows them eating the stomach and intestines of their prey first... As they usually choose herbivores as prey, it would be safe to assume that they are eating vegetation in the stomachs of their prey (and as the vegetation is in the stomach, would it also be safe to assume that it is partially digested (cooked)??? I have a stafford that has a genetic problem in which he cannot eat a diet high in protein or he forms oxalate kidney and bladder stones, so I guess I will not be taking up your challenge at this time... It will be interesting to see what results people have with their dogs if they follow this idea... For those that take up the challenge, I hope you post any changes here so we can all see them. Hi all, He seems much better today, there is no drooling, so it would appear no pain... We are seeing the vet again tomorrow. We will probably have to go to Sydney Uni so Ollie can have a human quality ultrasound as the vet said that there is not one here in Canberra... We will also pick up the new tinned dog food that Ollie has to eat (yuck - tinned dog food, the thought makes me ill)... Loraine, I have printed the details of that web site and I have it here to discuss with the vet tomorrow. Mooper, can you believe I only said to my hubby on Saturday night that I would have to send you an email to ask a good time to drop the crate off... Then Sunday all my plans went out the window with Ollie not feeling well... At least I know now why he drools like that and I can tell that he is in pain and I have the pain medication here to give him when it happens. Thanks all for your well wishes. Cheers Jodie

He has calcium oxcalate stones and the medication that was available was something phosphate and is no longer available... From my research I think the stones can be broken up by ultrasound but the only real way to treat it is with diet to prevent the stones in the first place... Our vet has ordered it in for us and we can pick it up on Tuesday - it is a Hills Science diet specially for this problem. My only concern is that Ollie has never eaten or liked any commercial dog food (especially canned stuff). He needs more moisture in his food so it has to be canned stuff (yuck)... I have found a great web page which is a diary of a dog owner that went through the same thing and all the problems along the way. I think I will print it out, highlight the areas of concern and take it up to Hamish (vet) and see what he thinks. Thanks for all your well wishes... I just get so upset when I can see that Ollie is in obvious pain and we have to wait for the pain killers to kick in... Cheers Jodie

Hi all, Just returned from the vet with Ollie as I noticed him drooling really bad and he seemed to be unable to settle in one spot... After checking him over and another xray, the vet seems to think that his surgery 2 weeks ago to remove an oxcalate stone from his bladder was successful. But due to his symptoms and the fact that he appears to be in pain, that he may have more stones in his kidneys and he is passing one now. We are changing to a Hills special diet food to help with this but he may have to go to Sydney Uni for a more detailed ultra sound to investigate further... He is laying on the lounge at the moment and appears to have settled a bit with the pain medication, so hopefully will have a good night sleep... If anyone else has had experience or knows anything about this, I would really appreciate some input. I have read so much on the internet that I am not sure what to beleive and what not to... We not long ago arrived home from the vet and Ollie has been given the all clear on the lump/tumor that was removed during his surgery for the bladder stone... As for the bladder stone, well it was an oxcelate ??? stone and his diet needs to be adjusted a little bit to reduce the protein and other stuff - will be picking up all the info later in the week when I take up another doggy urine sample for them. He needs to have ph neutral urine and the diet will help us do that... So, SUPER news for the boy all round... We would just like to thank everyone for all the support and well wishes that we received while Ollie was not feeling well. Thanks Jodie and Ollie dog...
