Yes to both of the above.. Referred aggression is a real problem and will only get worse, unless you address the problem.. You have a problem and 'hoping it all goes back to normal' once the pup goes or the bitch is speyed and healed, is unlikely without training and intervention..

Cool, I like that TSD.. Should be a breeze with Zig.. Now I need a release word?? Any ideas? OK and free just sound odd to me.. -
I'm with HW, I would be calling in some help and if you are not doing obedience training, it certainly wouldn't hurt and it would help with confidence building. By all means use 'training' patches on the lead and harness, hopefully that will stop the 'pat attack' because she is a tall dog and people think it is OK, when it clearly isn't.. The last thing you want is her biting the hand of someone going for a pat as they walk by..

We are still going strong with the 'touch' exercise. I am still only marking and treating - not adding the word 'touch' in yet. I did move my hand to a lot of different positions today and he still touched it each time. Hopefully by next week I can add the word in and then start adding in objects. This dog picks things up so quickly when he is on a roll. We did all the new stuff in the stays course (added yesterday, I think) - 3 exercises and he blitzed the whole lot of them in one session. He already knows the basics of them, which helps heaps - like not to take the food if it is on the floor or on my hand, unless it is given to him. Take out and Room Service cues, are things he already knew but we have definitely refined them because we are practicing them. I do need to practice my release cues though - I am really bad for just clapping my hands and saying hey! and that is the end of it.. He knows this but they use a cue, like OK or free.. I sort of feel like I need to teach a more obvious release cue.. -

I can't get in touch with this guy - anyone able to direct him to contact us? We would desperately love to get this girl sorted. I have left voicemails on his phone etc. I will pass this onto the person that I know that knows him - maybe she can get in contact with him.. -
It goes for the same as breeding humans - just because you can, doesn't mean you should!!

The report says he entered the garden where the dog was - nothing about kids or anything else. To me the dog was guarding/protecting his home/territory.. That is all I can read from what has been reported. If that is the case, the animal shouldn't be PTS - just my opinion. Why do people go into yards with dogs that are not their own?? I wouldn't go into a yard with a dog in it (apart from my own yard with my own dog). Not even a neighbour or a friends yard.

I just found out that he might appear as rough as guts but he is a good person and also helps rescue.. Not naming the source, so you will can either take my word for it or not :) The old saying, don't judge a book by its cover comes to mind.. I am guilty of doing so - I thought the worst when I saw the page, just like a lot of others. -

I have a list of courses that I am going to do :) I haven't started with the boxes yet - I just want to get the basic stuff we are doing for the stays and the focus class done.. I am sure I will be signing up for many more classes - I really like the delivery of the Fenzi courses and the instructors are great and get back to you really quickly. -

There is a breeder up that way that regularly drops whole litters at the local pound - I hope it isn't that one.. In February this year 7 dogs from the same litter were 'surrendered' to the pound and only 12 months before that I think it was 5 or 6 surrendered.. I am not saying it is the same breeder - just that sadly our beautiful boofhead dogs do attract less than great 'breeders' sometimes. -

I wasn't going to do anything else with it and I don't even know why I decided to. Then I didn't want to push it, in case I threw him off.. I did it at dinner time while I was getting his dinner ready with a couple of pieces of meat and he will touch both hands. I just offer the hand about 20cm away and look at him and then my hand and he touches it every time and he will do it on both hands. -

Maybe, just maybe because we don't know this person - we shouldn't assume certain things about them. They are not here to defend themselves and I like to give people a chance before writing them off to the stereotypes :) -

You are not derailing this thread SC - this is exactly what it is for. There are a lot of people who only do Bronze classes, so can only read over there - I thought this is a good place to ask questions for those of us on Bronze over there.. I know I said I was going to give it a rest but I couldn't help myself.. Guess what Zig just did - he touched my hand. I walked inside, got a piece of cheese out of the fridge and I held my hand to the side of his nose (about 20cm away) and I looked at him and looked at my hand - he moved over and touched it with his nose. I said yes and treated him. Then I held my other hand on the other side of his nose, looked him in the eye and looked at my hand - and he did it again.. So I said YES and gave him the cheese again. Just to be sure, I did it one more time with each hand and he did it each time. He moved to my hand - I didn't say touch, I just said yes when he did it. I think we might be starting to 'get it'.. -

Indeed!! With a disclaimer that says conditions apply so essentially the lifetime guarantee means little unless the exclusions are also stated. I didn't see that bit Ams - here is hoping they make good though. -

In saying that he offers a lifetime guarantee that he will take any dog he breeds back.. That is a big plus. -

TSD, I have just been talking about shaping with Huski on FB and I guess I have done a bit of it but not much - we think it may help Zig build some confidence, so I am all for it. Just another thing to learn :) When I bought his fitpaws fit disc, to help build his core strength, to help with his HD - it was a battle to get him near it. So we started with sitting it near him and rewarding him if he didn't move away from it. Then he was rewarded for touching it. He already knew 'on', so we escalated to one paw on, then two paws on. We can get him 'up' with all four paws on but he obviously doesn't like it, so I don't push it and we use it more with front paws on and then back paws, walking over it etc.. Basically we took it step by step and every time he achieved one, we moved the goal post and pushed him that bit more. I tend to be careful with him because he will shut down if pushed too hard. If I get frustrated, I tend to just close down the training session with a 'catch the treat or ball' so it always ends on a good note. So he is always happy to 'work'. He heels nicely and 'usually' sits at heel in a nice position. I had to correct him and move him in closer once and he dropped and wouldn't get up again. So it ended the training session. All I did was put my hand on his rump and slide him in.. I don't know why he is so precious about it but a physical correction causes him to shut down, so I tend to 'lure' him into everything I have taught him. Treats at home and the ball when out. He will do it all without a lure or a treat but obviously it is much better with. If you have some names of videos for free shaping that I can look up, I would appreciate it. Thanks SC, they sure are sent to test us sometimes. I know the majority of Zig's issues are mine, not his. Good example for ages when heeling he would walk nearly a metre away from me - no one could work out why. Turns out, it is the way I hold the lead. It is looped around my hand and the handle was hanging too close to his face, so he was avoiding being close to it. I changed leads and it was solved instantly. -
Dog Attacks While Being Trained By Cesar Milan
Staffyluv replied to sandgrubber's topic in In The News
I get them with some regularity. Less so, now. It's usually the dog who suffers. I don't see them but then I am not looking for them either and I rarely watch the show. I used to watch it and I used to like it I do know better now :) Exactly.. I don't particularly like the way he does things but he obviously is reasonably successful at what he does and has great promotion. I would never try to do what he does if confronted by a dog that wasn't happy to see me.. I am also surprised we don't hear more about people trying his techniques and getting hurt. It's not hard through aversives for a weak dog reacting out of insecurity to fear the handler and avoid correction and seemingly appear fixed. When dealing with harder dogs reacting from social aggression, Cesar often gets bitten.....there are a few videos I have seen cut short as the dog comes back at him......the next shot of the dog is laying on the ground and Cesar stroking it.....possibly coming out of a choke out more than likely. There was one with a Wolf X GSD where the camera stopped filming just as he began to hang the dog up.....what they do is hang the dog up until it passes out from lack of air.....something they wouldn't show on camera......it was on old school fix for handler aggression in the Koehler/Most/Monks of New Skete training era which incorporated alpha rolls and the like. I rarely watch the show - I could probably count on one hand the amount of his shows I have seen in the last couple of years. I did watch it when it first started and back then, I thought he was OK and doing 'good' by helping people and their dogs. He definitely helps some people and their dogs. It isn't the way I would like to see my dog 'fixed' if he had issues like some that CM deals with though. I guess being bitten comes with the territory, you are going to work with dogs, there is a chance of being bitten at some point - my vet has told me how many times he has been bitten. -

He isn't supposed to jump (he has HD) lol at the sticky tape on her head - that might actually work for Zig, he hates things on his head. I think I find it frustrating because he picks some things up so quickly and easily and then simple things, he just doesn't get it.. I made my mind up to leave it alone.. It isn't fair to him that I get frustrated that I can't teach him something when he really is a super dog to me in so many other ways. I have a friend who is a trainer and she has offered to help me with it - I might take her up on it in about a month after we do our noseworks workshop and the weather is a bit nicer outside.
