  1. Oh yeah - Staffords are the first to let you know if things are not to their liking... Glad to hear she is on the mend..
  2. Gilly I was just about to post the same thing... Why crop the ears - it really does look like crap compared to the dogs with ears (just my opinion)...
  3. Sorry, but I think that's an awful idea and would not ever talk to a friend if they did that to me. Aztec, as a friend all you should do is offer support not go behind your friends back and interfere - I'm sure you wouldn't do that though. I've had grooming clients where I've been tempted to contact breeders and let them know about 'stuff' but it's not my business so I leave it alone. Sorry Dru, should have worded that better... Of course with her friends permission... I know I should not assume but I just thought maybe the woman might be embarrassed to contact the breeder to ask them to take the puppy back and as a friend, I would do this for her... I would never advocate doing something like that behind her back
  4. a) Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier (BYB - yes I have learned my lesson) b) Age: 14 years 2+months DOB 12/6/1997 c) Diet: has always had meat and veg plus fruit, yoghurt etc d) Supplements:fish oil, vit C, plus chinese herbs etc, cartrophen each month e) Exercise regime: free exercise, when he wanted plus walked every morning on lead f) Temperament:pretty good most of the time - has had some aggession issues with other dogs but was only after he was attacked twice in a short space of time g) Prior/current health concerns: LOTS... Skin allergies when young, ear infections, eye infections, kidney and bladders stones (oxalate??) when he was 6, diagnosed with Mast Cell Tumours grade 2, no clear margins on excision and was systemic (in his lymph system) when he was 8 (was given 12-18 months). Treatment was chemo and holistic. Last year he neighbour gave him a sausage off the BBQ and he ended up with pancreatitis - so all food is now as low in fat as possible... He is 14 now and pretty much deaf (although I have my suspicions that it is selective deafness) and his back legs are quite weak from tendon issues and arthritis. h) Living arrangements: Has always been an inside dog. Used to dominate the kids beds but as they got older and shoved him out, he comes to me now and has his own bed in my room (but somehow manages to end up on the end of my bed a lot of the time).. i) Pictures! There are lots of him all over the forum but you can see him in my avatar.. I will take some newer ones as he is really grey (white) around the muzzle now... I think he is more precious today than the day we bought him home because he has been through so much and still gets up every morning to go for a walk around the park... We walk about a quarter of the distance in more than double the time we used to but he still loves it...
  5. Any news yet? Everything crossed for China and a quick recovery
  6. Can you find out who the breeder is and contact them and let them know??? Like someone said earlier - most breeders have waiting lists for puppies and the breeder may just well have the perfect home for the pup (or want the little one back).. Please try to make your friend see sense with this - it is one thing to offload the puppy, it is another thing all together to do it the right way. If she really cares for the little guy, she will contact the breeder or allow someone else to do so on her behalf if she is embarrassed to do so.
  7. Jules, Ollie was dxd with MCT grade 2 and given 12-18 months back in 2005... At first and probably for the first 3 years I was so worried about losing him and I used to take him to the vet at every tiny sign of illness or hiccup.. Admittedly I have been overly blessed to have had him this long and it is nothing short of a miracle. I guess after a while, you just appreciate the fact that they are not in pain, still want a play or walk (even if it is only for a few minutes) and just enjoy the time you have.. Make the most of the time you have with them and try not to dwell on the fact that they could leave you at any moment.
  8. My sister bought a Staffy from a BYB and at about 10 weeks old he was circling and challenging the older Stafford (not BYB)... This boy was put down at 18 months are months of tormenting and attacking the other dogs - it finally started circling and growling at my niece and when my sister went out and tried to stop him, he went for her... The vet was called that afternoon and he is buried in the back yard... I always thought there was something not quite right about this boy - he always stalked people and held his tail high most of the time.. He was a scary dog... I think some dogs can be born with something wrong with them - the vet that put him down suggested he may have had a brain tumour or something... To be honest, I don't think it matters - he is one dog that should have been put down a lot sooner than he was.
  9. + replacing pillows (they seem to think these are toys to be destuffed) and the odd foam mattress is fair play when left at Stafford level... Actually anything is fair game when left at Stafford level... Our destroyed numerous hockey balls and sticks and other expensive sports equipment, pillows (only when there was no pillow case on them), a mattress... We have multiple vet visits for other issues (not snakes, thank doG)... They are so worth every cent...
  10. I don't know much about snakes but saw a tiger once - the pics sure do remind me of the tiger snake we saw... Everything crossed for you Sandra
  11. Here is the video from 9news. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/8292120/boy-attacked-by-rottweiler-in-sydney Well that could be bloody anything! Rottweiler cross, shepherd cross, kelpie cross, cross cross  Agree, definitely not a pure Rottweiler. Also that may not even be the dog that attacked the kids - the news use 'file tapes' so often now that you don't know if you are watching the actual dog or not...
  12. Until the vet gets back to you I guess you could just stick with lower protein meats like chicken and fish When the vet let's you know what levels of protein your dog should be having it might pay to contact an holistic vet to help design a suitable diet
  13. I am so sorry for the news Montage.. At 13 Isa is doing very well indeed... I agree with you not doing chemo or surgery at her age - Ollie is 14 now and 6 years post dxd MCT grade 2 with no clear margins and already in his lymph system... We just take one day at a time - so long as they are comfortable, eating and happy, I see no reason to change anything... The milk thistle tablets would be great (like Helen suggested) and seeing an holitic vet to supplement Isa can make a world of difference... All the very best for you and Isa Jodie and Ollie dog
  14. Happy Birthday Atlas. xx From Jodie and Ollie dog Cin when you find out where the time goes, let me know - it goes way to fast...
  15. First thing in the morning when he is still so happy to see me and he wants to go for a walk... At 14 years old, it takes us about half an hour to 45 minutes to walk, what would once have only taken about 10-15 minutes... He stops at lot and sniffs everything... Night time when he gets cold, he comes in and wants up on the bed - he still sleeps on the end of the bed facing the door and he has his blanket over him.. I think he is even more precious now as an old dog than he was when he was younger... I am sad for him in one way as being an old dog, the kids no longer stop and want to pat him and you can just see the look on his face when kids are coming in his direction - all he wants is for them to stop...

Banning a whole 'breed' or 'type' of dog is useless... However I think the line in the sand has been drawn with this last incident...(RIP baby girl)... Sadly with the dob a dog in - I am now in fear for my 14 year old, cancer ridden, deaf unpapered staffy... if the neighbours get pissy with me and want to be A holes, then they can call the pound and say I have a 'pit bull type' dog in the back yard... I guess they will be able to take him away without any other cause or reason now... This is going to be horrible for those of us with good dogs... Ollie has never even growled at someone and there are those in the public that would have him killed because he is not a ANKC registered dog and I cannot prove his heritage - he will fit the 22 point checklist like a glove... Guess I might have to go into hiding with him... My point being that not all dogs come from registered breeders (some of us made mistakes and bought from BYB before we knew any better)... Would an animal lover really see a dog that has no history of aggression or attack be put to sleep all because he looks like a 'type' of dog??? Shame on those people, shame!
  17. Clear margins is a good sign. Everything crossed for a very long remission
  18. Your vet should have taken a lymph node to see if it had already invaded the lymph system. Your vet should also have offered a more thorough explanation of diagnosis. Were there clear margins when the tumor was removed? If yes then that is really good news. If not then further investigation is warranted. I hope your boy has clear margins and all will be well but I still would have thought if the vet even suspected it could be in the lymph system that they would have at least sampled this
  19. MS I agree that you should get him off to the vet. One thing that I noticed more than anything else since Ollie was dxd with MCT was how other dogs reacted towards him. Good luck I hope he he is still in remission and it lasts a very long time
  20. Rest in Peace Cordelia... Jacq, your tribute is just beautiful. The bonds we form with our canine companions is only understood by others of the same mind. Those that don't think like we do, have my deepest sympathy for they will never know the love we feel and the unconditional love and devotion we get in return from our dogs. Cordy was certainly a wonderful ambassador for all dogs. Hugs to you and yours on what is sure to be a very hard day but remember, she will be waiting at the bridge, just like she waited at the pound for you to come back for her. xxoo
  21. a snippet from wiki (not the most accurate of all sources but it appears basic from memory) Early in the mid-19th century the "Bull and Terrier" breeds were developed to satisfy the needs for vermin control and animal-based blood sports. The "Bull and Terriers" were based on the Old English Bulldog (now extinct) and one or more of Old English Terrier and "Black and tan terrier", now known as Manchester Terrier. This new breed combined the speed and dexterity of lightly built terriers with the dour tenacity of the Bulldog, which was a poor performer in most combat situations, having been bred almost exclusively for killing bulls and bears tied to a post. Due to the lack of breed standards—breeding was for performance, not appearance—the "Bull and Terrier" eventually divided into the ancestors of "Bull Terriers" and "Staffordshire Bull Terriers", both smaller and easier to handle than the progenitor.[6][7][8][9] Link
  22. Just found a couple of pics of old english terrier dogs:
  23. Absolutely... But the original 'terrier' that the stafford was bred from was the old english terrier (if memory serves me correctly) and this breed no longer exists. Bull Terrier:
