Help Needed With "stand For Examination"
Cleo's Corgwyn replied to koalathebear's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Lots of good advice- try getting OH to stand right in front of him while you move around Elbie. Keep his focus on OH while you graually move in closer and closer. This is one of those things that should be built up gradually. Keep his focus solid, keep him steady, and build on that. The advice another poster gave you of passing a hand down his side and keeping it against his rear leg might help too. Grab me on Sunday if you want me to have a look. He's doing well, and is still very much a puppy. If you build this solidly now, he'll keep doing brilliantly. -

Yep, I often train tricks when the weather isn't conducive to outside activity. My girl is smart, and mental stimulation is almost as good as physical. My obedience club requires tricks to pass the first couple of levels of training, on the basis that yes, anything we train is a *trick*, but training something that people see as fun, helps to keep it fun for both people and dogs! I like training tricks though!

What's Another Breed Selection Thread? Hehe.

The Cardigans are more laid back, but by the same token they're not as friendly to everyone as the Pems are - they prefer a proper introduction, and time to decide whether they're worth knowing! They are (as are all corgis, it seems!) big shedders, but the coat is pretty easy care. Shandy is pretty smart, and likes plenty of stimulation, but she lives with two cats with no problems. -
We were talking about this at my trial yesterday (yes, Shandy and I had a shocker, in her 1st CD trial!) and about all the physiological changes that nerves can bring on - changes to sweat, and stomach acid, etc, that dogs must be able to smell and must confuse them no end. Shandy even sat during her SFE yesterday= my ex show dog, who normally doesn't even blink at them! I still don't know what to do about them, but I can understand how it affects the dogs!

Building Confidence In A Timid Dog...
Cleo's Corgwyn replied to BJ.'s topic in General Dog Discussion
You could borrow Shandy - she' dtalk to your OH, and you know Jester would probably just follow her! Seriously, lots of yummy treats- NILIF stuff, once he's comfortable taking food, start throwing in some basic commands that Jester knows; sit, etc to earn his treats. Is he clicker trained at all? Its often recommended, as its clear communication. -
I have a trial Saturday morning, but my weekend plans are pretty flexible otherwise.
-
Wow, what a great weekend for all! RS, I think those 'so close' days are the most disheartening of all, to get so close to a Q, you could almost taste it.
-
Sorry, but I don't think I can do Wednesay

Help Max Won't Stop Humping Winston!

At least you recognised it! Keep control of his interactions as others have suggested, and you'll keep the situation under control while you see if there's any change in behaviour. -
Its what a lot of people say about competing - no matter what the score and placings, we all still take the best dog home at the end of the day!
-
not sure if I'll be in town that weekend, but would love to come if I am!
-
Sounds like fun; I have an obedience trial on the morning of the 25th, but aside from that, I'm up for it (aside from obedience training Thurs night and Sun AM, DWD training Fri night and Agility Mon Nights ) Its about time we had a decent DOL Canberra get together!

Well, Miss Shandy got a solid, if not spectacular Obedience Q today, giving her a CCD title! So she' s now CH. Milnholm Carnival Queen CCD (or will be, once I get the paperwork in) I'm so proud of her! This is the first time I've even had a dog at competition level, and I'm really enjoying the journey with her.
-
SBT, Shandy and I are in CCD tomorrow. I'll keep an eye out for you.
-
CBR has summed it up for me, I think - our dogs love the work and the outings, competitions are really just about motivating us to keep at it!
-
My girl definitely enjoys working, and doing things with me. She'd probably just be happy to keep going to class regularly, and training with me. Trials are really about the people in that respect, and I guess assessing when the dogs are ready to move up to the next level of training. I have a lot of fun with my girl, and we enjoy trying different things; we're abbling in agility, going to give Dances with Dogs a go, and she'll be assessed as a therapy dog later this year. But I'm still nervous about the trial this weekend! Good luck to you, an everyone else who is trialling this weekend too! EFS

Sorry, its a bit far for me, but maybe get her to contact the Companion Dog Club - they'd be closest, and might put something up on their notice board?
