Dwd Routine - Freestyle Or Htm
Cleo's Corgwyn replied to ness's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
BC4ME, I will be going to the workshop in Canberra. I'm looking forward to it! Although we have some really talented performers and trainers in Canberra, we are a bit isolated, and its great to get input from others with interesting ideas and insights. Rubystar, here's our freestyle routine Shandy and I doing our Canine Freestyle starters to Juice Newton’s Queen of Hearts . This was a pass, and our starters title. -
Dwd Routine - Freestyle Or Htm

We got our Starters Freestyle title last weekend - despite Shandy losing several points each time due to her enthusiastic barking! Go the freestyle- you obviously both enjoy it! -
Recommendation Fo Dog Grooming Salon In Canberra?
Cleo's Corgwyn replied to Canberra Skye's topic in General Dog Discussion
I've heard a few bad reports on that place recently. Although my breed doesn't require clipping, I use the hydrobaths at Fancy Feathers and Fur at Kippax shops, and have always found Penny very helpful, and with a nice touch with dogs -
You both look like you're having fun! We're doing our HTM routine this weekend to a Turkish Pop song, Simarik, by Tarkan (it's recognisable, as it's been sampled by a few western pop songs) and Freestyle to Juice Newton's 'Queen of Hearts'. I'm also using Audacity, and I've found it pretty straightforward to use for my purposes.

well done, Spoilt Lab! What a nice way to start your trialling career. -
Wuffles, have you had a chat to Cheryl? I think she went to working with pieces of dowel, etc, before working back up to dumbbell. Natsu Chan, she's very cute, and alert looking, and I like the name.

I got my girl as an ex show dog, when she was 18 months old. I was deliberately looking for a dog with some aptitude and potential for dog sports, and after talking to a few breeders who were retiring dogs, I got Shandy. She came to me not even knowing how to sit reliably on cue, and now has her first obedience title and also has starting competing in Dances With Dogs, just on 3 years later. She wasn't completely toilet trained, but has been such an easy dog that she was perfectly reliable within a few days. I chose a dog that wanted to work, but wasn't too high drive, so she'd cope OK with our 2 cats. She came with a good knowledge of her established temperament and well socialised with other dogs and people from her show career. My family used to breed dogs, and my parents current dogs are also ex show dogs as well, and its definitely a great way of getting a dog. My next dog will probably be a pup, in order to get the edge in training early, and I have to admit, aside from the cuteness, I'm kind of dreading the extra work involved!

2011 Brags Thread
Cleo's Corgwyn replied to Agility Dogs's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
It was lovely work from Wuffles and Ava; a well deserved win and a lovely score! Congrats to Ness and Kenz, TSD& Ziggy and Beth and Lottie on such a great assortment of qualies! Shandy and I also managed to scrape a Novice pass in the same trial as Wuffles and Ava. It wasn't anywhere near as pretty, but considering that 3 weeks ago, I was seriously considering withdrawing from the trial, as I knew I needed to do some serious retraining on her heeling, I was ecstatic to manage a pass in the heeling! And a first pass is just that! -
Thanks RS! RS, I'd be interested as well; I'm suffering from the same problem (worse than Wuffle and Ava) My independent little so-and-so will actually take herself off when she gets bored, or just stop and wait for me to return! I can email you too but it sounds like a different problem so the advice I've been given is probably not going to work for you the same way. I have to jump off the computer shortly but when I get a minute I'll type some stuff up for the both of you Thanks RS. I think it's time for some major retraining in heeling, so I'm going to work out a proper program.

Melissa, my folks still live in Gladstone ( I assume you mean in Qld?) and have two boxers. I haven't trained at the obedience club since I was a teen, so I couldn't comment on it now, but there are lots of nice walks for dogs. If you go for a walk around Spinnaker Park, at the back of the Marina, and see an older man with two brindle and white boxers, then say 'hi' to my Dad, with Ruby and Chance. If you want any more, PM me, and I'll see what else I can tell you...

I like your translations, Koala! Corgis, as you well know, are actually Pems and Cardis, to those in the know. I really like the diminutive Corgwyn - it's nicely Welsh!

So sorry to hear that your much loved friend and partner is gone

Hey Stack, I trial in obedience with Shandy, my Cardigan Corgi, and have just entered our first Dances with Dogs trial. We've also dabbled in agility, and might go back at some point. We keep getting head hunted for Flyball, as a height dog, especially since she's a good retriever, but she isn't much into barking dogs, so we've never focused much on that. The first thing you need for a lot of dog sports is a degree of control, especially a good recall, so there's lots you can get from obedience. Corgi's were bred to be an amazingly versatile farm dog and herder, and people are often surprised at just how good they can be at these things. There's lots of corgis trialling in various performance sports in the US.

Canberra And Surrounds Dol Meet (with Furkids)
Cleo's Corgwyn replied to kaywoman68's topic in General Dog Discussion
OOh, Saxon Pup, you got a new Sheltie pup? I'll be free Sunday afternoon, if that suits anyone? -
I have to second Wuffles, Kamal was just brilliant! He has an amazing ability to read dogs and to communicate his requirements to dogs.

I'm with Corvus on this; there are certain breeds I'm very cautious about allowing my dog to interact with, as I know she doesn't appreciate their 'style'. I am especially cautious if the owners of these dogs don't appear to be very savvy or aware of their dog's behaviour. Like Mita, I don't to much like small dogs in general. This comes from spending a lot of time at dog shows as a small child, and having too many small dogs go nuts at me for just walking past. I recognise that this is a prejudice, and I'm very careful to keep an open mind when I meet small dogs, especially when I teach them in class, but they are not, as a group, the type of dog I'd own. I've also faced prejudice against my dog on a breed basis. My girl is a Cardigan Welsh Corgi, and they do tend to be more laid back than the Pembrokes in general, although they're also more standoffish with strangers. I often get people comment, in a surprised fashion, that they like my girl. They've usually only met a few Pembrokes in the past, and Pembrokes often suffered from poor ownership of people who treated them like a cute toy dog, forgetting that they are also a smart, energetic herding dogs, an then act all surprised when they get snippy, and start trying to control things! My girl, aside from the more lad back Cardi temperament, also gets plenty of exercise and training, and has been very well socialised. So I think we all have our biases - biases are simply a mindset of behaviour we have learnt through observation and practice, and they can be a useful short cut to judge the world we move through. If we're aware of them, and how we use them, they shouldn't be a problem!

Kikopups channel on you tube has some good trick videos. A couple to consider though - 'speak' on command - I used you tube videos of dogs barking, as Shandy will react to that, but teasing them with food is often recommended too. The 'Bang', roll over, play dead is another good one - train a roll onto the side, train them to hold it, then add a finger pistol "Bang" cue. I taught Shandy to 'speak' one wet afternoon. Paw targeting is another good one - work on both paws, one to each hand. Good luck, and let us know how you go - I hope you can come up with some fun stuff to keep you both occupied!

How Smart Are Boxers?
Cleo's Corgwyn replied to flame ryder's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
There's at least one boxer competing at quite a high level around here. My Dad has gone back to having boxers again and although he doesn't compete, with a little bit of polish, I think both his dogs could be competitive quickly. I think the trick with any playful dog is to keep the fun in it for both of you, and make sure that you train with that in mind! -

Need A New Heelwork To Music Song
Cleo's Corgwyn replied to BC4ME's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Depends on what you like? I'm currently working on Chad Kroeger and Santanas 'Into the Night' I've also toyed with the old Mambo number 5, Crazy Little Thing Called Love The Beat Goes On You Spin me Right Round The King of Wishful Thinking Shake a Tail Feather And I have a stack of Belly dance and Arabic Pop, but I'm a belly dancer, so that suits me. -
If you like the working dog personality and type, but would prefer something a little smaller, have you looked at one of the Corgi Breeds? I have a Welsh Corgi (Cardigan) which are a little bigger than the Pembrokes, come in a wider range of colours and have a more laid back temperament(the Pem's are friendlier to strangers, by contrast). I don't often recommend my favourite breed, but if you are prepared for the requirements of a working dog, and remember that for all their short legs, this is still a breed capable of herding cattle all day, they are a wonderful breed to have around! They're strictly a medium sized dog with short legs. My Shandy came to us as an ex show dog, and I was looking for a dog sport prospect. She's never been any trouble, but we train and compete in obedience, and dabble in Dances with Dogs, and agility sometimes. She has a very deep bark, but is not a 'barker' although apparently some corgis can be nuisances if not kept entertained. Come and visit us in the Corgi breed thread if you'd like to discuss either breed more.
