Thanks guys for putting me at ease about the lenses. I think I have been reading too much about how no one uses them and being on such a tight budget, thought I would be better off without them. It is good to get good feedback about them and that you are getting great photos with them. After reading your replies I went searching flickr for photos taken with kit lenses and I have to say there are some brilliant photos out there. Um, tlc, I actually do not know what lens comes with it, except that it states it comes with an EF kit lens. I have no idea what that means. I am so looking forward to receiving the camera and can not wait to start learning all about what it does. But I am feeling VERY guilty over spending this sort of money on myself. After I received the email saying they did not have the camera in stock, I thought it was a sign that I should not be buying one. I have wanted a DSLR for ages, but have a real issue with buying such expensive stuff for myself. But hubby was adamant and my son has kindly offered me some money to put towards it, so I figure I cant argue with all of them. So soon I hope to flood the photo forums with lots of piccys.

I went on to Teds website and purchased the Canon 1000d with EF kit for $799 and purchased the 50mm and tripod and memory card. Now lets hope they have them instock.

thanks tess, was just having a look and yeah for an extra say 50 to 100 $ I could get the kit lens. So many decisions.

Thanks SB :D I was just notified that they have no stock of the camera and dont know when they will be getting some more, so have canceled my order. :p Will look elsewhere for a good bargain.

I have been looking at buying a DSLR for a while now, but money is a big hurdle ( isnt it always ) Have been looking at Canons and have decided on the 1000d. But instead of getting one with the kit lenses, I have decided to get just the body and a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens, because by reading other peoples posts have noticed that people dont end up using the kit lenses or they are not happy with them. Have come to the realization that the 50mm is a very popular lens and very versatile. These two are costing me $850, is this good??? Any feedback would be great thanks :D edited to add that I am only after a camera for hobby purpose. But want sharp, focused photos.

Dont know if this is right, but it is the best I could get out of about 50 photos.

I just have to say that I am loving this thread!!!! I have tried and failed miserably on every occassion. But love looking at all the great photos.

Leopuppy, love your little ones, too cute, they are growing up real fast. I am still not taking photos atm. Really just can not be bothered, plus I have no inspiration.
