The Best Thing I Heard At The Royal Was...
winpara replied to Elfin's topic in General Dog Discussion
*coffee splurk* oh great now I have to dry the keyboard! After a few years of "I had a xxxxx once but MINE was SOOOO much bigger/hairier/better" I was starting to worry perhaps I was on the wrong track with my dogs... Then I started a boarding kennel... Now I have personal knowledge of what Joe Public's dog actually looks like and I know why they always looked so much different to mine!! I almost die of shock everytime I get a new customer that actually IS the breed they say! -
Congrats on the new babies! and good to see the whelping box arrived in time too! If Kinta is looking good now then definitely enter her in a few shows for when the pups are 6-8 weeks of age. I have with a few of my girls over the years and all of them have picked up points. One of them even won BIG to finish her title! Being she is so close I think it would definitely be worth it before she goes bald!!

Oldfield, Double K Or Liberty Dryer For Samoyed?
winpara replied to sambea's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I only have a Double K (two motors) but I love it!! It does a great job with thick double coats I have used it not only for blasting out water after a bath but also for blasting out coat before the bath - much easier for both dog and myself than brushing! -
Does Twisted Stomach = Gastric Torsion ?
winpara replied to Purple Julie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yep, sounds like bloat/torsion/GDV whatever you want to call it. I believe it is thought to run in families so your girl could be at higher risk. But then Shepherds in general have a higher risk of GDV anyway. That said sometimes it will happen out of the blue regardless of what precautions you take and whether your dog is a higher risk or not. We lost our very fit and healthy 12yo Corgi a couple of months ago to bloat. She had had a normal day, fed her normal dinner at the usual time. Was a little "quiet" later that night when I let her out for last toilet before bed but not enough to ring alarm bells. No crying, panting, nothing. Woke in the morning and she was in bed still which was unusual. Called to her and realised she was very depressed and pale and looked like she was 8 weeks pregnant. Rushed to the vet immediately for emergency care and the corrective surgery. She held on for 36 hours but sadly the shock was too much for her and she died. She was the first Corgi with bloat my vets had ever seen and they have many years of experience between them. Since we lost her tho we have heard of the occasional Corgi getting it but it is very rare. I have also heard of dogs fed raw food who got it. I think it is just one of those things that will happen if it is going to happen regardless of the risk or the precautions you might take. Best thing to do is be aware of the symptoms as the earlier you get treatment the more chance the dog has of survival. We have now changed to morning feeds instead of night as that way if it should happen again I will be awake and hopefully notice the symptoms early enough to get treatment in time. -
ooh what fun! I have been looking to play with my new lens, so nice to have a purpose instead of just taking random shots! Loving the poo shoes BTW! Teeth - Anyone Seen This Before?
winpara replied to My Mad GSP's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I had a bitch with teeth like this... when they started coming thru they were almost horizontal... as they erupted further they did straighten towards the correct position, however they did always stick out. I did show her and no judges ever commented on it as once the adult teeth were all in place it really wasn't that noticeable. (at least not from a quick glance). Her teeth and jaws were of normal size and the teeth (both baby and adult) did not appear to be cramped in any way. She had a lovely scissor bite, full dentition and correct occlusion of her premolars. In her first litter she produced a daughter with exactly the same thing. I speyed them both! Bitch was a "stud fee" puppy and I have no personal knowledge of many of the dogs in her dams pedigree (only names and photos). I had never had/seen this problem before (or since) and after she produced a pup with the same thing I decided I didn't want to risk introducing such a problem into my bloodlines hence speying them both. I never took either of them to a specialist as neither of the girls had any trouble from the teeth. (no ulcers/rubbing or eating problems) -
For those who are reading this thread who have dogs with Lymphoma. My friends dog was diagnosed about a year ago, had chemo and went into remission then relapsed and has just had another round of chemo followed by a bone marrow transplant. She has been sharing her experiences on her blog which is probably worth a read for anyone considering treatment. There is also a lot of other posts about her other dogs/agility trials but if you search the blog for "Lymphoma" (in the bar at the top of the page) it should bring up all of the relevant posts. Edited to add link to page with lymphoma posts already searched. http://ravencypher.blogspot.com/search?q=lymphoma

I have found loose, frequent motions in puppies are often the result of feeding too large a portion size as it puts the body into fast forward! Feeding too much is very easy to do if you have a gutsy pup who loves dinner! If you find things don't improve rapidly with the meds I would fast her for one meal and then feed her half her normal portion the next meal. Split her daily allowance into more meals so you are feeding the same total amount but not so much at a time. Once she is settled again you can start increasing the size of each meal and cutting back on the frequency - watch her poos as a guide to the amount to feed, if they start getting soft again you know you've increased too much. oh and some protexin for a few days after she has finished her antibiotics would be a good idea too.

Double K Challengeair Vs. Double K Airmax Dryers
winpara replied to ~*Shell*~'s topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have a Double K Airmax and wouldn't be without it! - best "dog thing" I ever bought! Being in WA it never gets cold enough here to need a heated dryer and warms up quite nicely even on our coldest days. I have an enormous Malamute who comes to board and it is great for blasting him dry and also blasting out all of the loose coat before the bath - altho not recommended to do in a small backyard unless your neighbours dont mind a coating of white, snow like hair over everything! -
I haven't yet bred a BC pup with a heart murmur but have heard of "puppy" murmurs in other breeds that resolve as the pup gets older and cause no problems. However I do know of a few instances of Border Collies with PDA, which does present in pups as a murmur. One of which was missed when the pup had its vaccinations as the vet was not aware that it was possible in BC's. The unfortunate thing for her was that she was not diagnosed early enough so the first surgery she had to correct the problem was not 100%effective and she required another surgery later on. She is now 8yrs old and has been (and still is!) a very successful agility dog. I would be making your vet aware and/or find a vet who can accurately diagnose the exact cause of the murmur (PDA is supposed to have a characteristic sound). If it is PDA it is important to have it diagnosed whilst still quite young so the operation can be performed early and so have the best chance of succeeding. Some PDA links... http://www.bobmckee.com/Client%20Info/Cardiac/PDA.html http://www.upei.ca/~cidd/Diseases/cardiova...iseases/PDA.htm http://www.puresilkkennels.net/pda.html

I was in the dog shop at CAWA on the weekend and I am sure I saw some... the usual Cholesterol and also Kolestrol? which might be the Wella one? It was out of stock for a long time but hopefully supplies are back to normal now! For those interstate they do have a website http://members.iinet.net.au/~wasps - it is a little hard to navigate so probably best to just give them a call or shoot off an email.

Just found these! Great pics! :D I like 2 and 3... and had some fun tweaking them a little in Photoshop :D Did a gradient select and lense blur to drop the background out of focus a little more - and then I added a warming filter to give it a bit of a sunset lighting effect. What do you think? Better or worse? I love photoshop but sadly don't own a camera worthy of it! *lol* so am always happy to find piccies to play with! Hoping Santa might bring a Nikon DSLR for Christmas!

Another vote here for Protexin - its great stuff! Great for stressy upset tummy, great after finishing antibiotic treatment, great to take away whilst traveling in case of tummy upset. Pretty much great in general to get them back to normal poo if they have had an upset tummy for any reason. I have used a couple of different types on the dogs. Be aware it only has a short "use by" - I have found if only using it intermittently in small doses the paste is a good size (comes in what looks like a horse wormer tube!). And I am yet to meet a dog who wouldn't just lick it off your finger!
