I have had two different bitches done - one with frozen and one with chilled. Both missed. Both took on their next seasons (frozen surgical and natural mating). Cost for TCI was approx $400

I have clipped easily a dozen Border Collies (usually with either a #7F blade = 4mm or a #5F blade = 6mm) all have grown their coats back just fine and no worse (but on two occasions it was better!) to what it was like pre-clipping. I have even shown two different dogs (both entire males) after they had been clipped the previous summer and both coats was better (and straighter) than ever. It is good for a laugh for a week or so afterwards until you get used to the new look too ;) In my experience I have found desexing can do much worse things to the coat than clipping. The important thing to remember is that just because they are clipped doesn't mean you dont have to brush them, that is still important and will give the coat the best chance of growing back normally. I think most of the problem coats after clipping has to do with lazy owners who don't brush the dog full stop (hence needing to clip as they are too matted to groom out comfortably). If you don't maintain the coat then it will be awful whether it has been clipped previously or not IMO. I have had BC's in boarding who have been totally matted to the skin and yes I strongly recommend their owners clip the dog 3 times a year. At least the poor dog is more comfortable than when its legs are matted together or skin infected from going swimming and not drying properly due to matting. The other thing I have found is that the best time to clip them is when they are shedding the most coat, just before the new one starts regrowing or otherwise once the new coat is fully through after shedding. The worst look comes when you clip off a half grown coat and it takes the longest to return to normal as you need to go through 1.5 coat cycles instead of .5-1. Oh and I used to be anti-clipping too until I did a couple of my own and now am 100% for it if it is the right thing for owner and dog. Photos below are of one of my boys. First image in full coat at almost 3 years, totally clipped off at 10 years, 10 months post clipping and lastly 2 years post clipping.

Wow that looks like fun and I have never even heard of it! On the event information page it says Runners wishing to run with a dog are welcome, but please keep the dog on a short lead or harness and under control throughout the event. Please also review the parkrun support page article about running with a dog at parkrun events. http://support.parkrun.com/entries/22037173-can-i-run-with-my-dog :)

As far as I am aware there is currently no test for merle patterning. There *was* a test a few years ago but I believe it was found that the gene they were testing was not actually responsible for the merle pattern and was instead a form of piebald marking. The K locus has nothing to do with whether a dog has the gene for merle patterning.

I would personally use the Malaseb, as it's only going to take a week or so of using it diluted 3mls to 100 water. Sure beats the hell out of a fullblown ear infection that would require ab's and it has the potential for further complications. Yep - I agree with this. I have also used Dermotic (under vet advice) on a bitch from 6wks through to term as the washes just weren't cutting it with her ears. All was fine.
-
Are you sure the receptionist knew what test you were after? Can't see them needing to "order" it is all. Cost here (Perth) is generally around the $40 mark. Blood drawn in the morning and results that afternoon. Testing is done by a human pathology lab and not in house.

why on earth at that late stage? let her homones alone and just put then down on arrival? (if your so desperate to be ethical) Ive lost babies into 7 months term and you have no idea what a mess that makes of your body, try it some time before you do it to your dog who cant talk. Not sure what a 7 month human pregnancy has to do with a 5 week canine one... ? Having had a bitch whelp and lose all of her puppies at birth I can tell you they are a lot more affected by that loss than what this bitch went through at 5 weeks gestation, not to mention the health risks involved with carrying a pregnancy to term and subsequent whelping. I agree it is not ideal to do late HOWEVER as I said no mating was witnessed and bitch had been separated in what should have been plenty of time but unfortunately, as we found later when planning her first breeding - when you ovulate on day 4 of a season there is not a lot of margin to be had. I did what was right for my bitch and her unborn whelps considering her circumstances at the time. Looking back I would still take the same course of action. I was sharing my first hand experience with Alizin for the OP after reading several replies that stated they had "heard" abortion drugs had had disastrous results for the reproductive health of the bitch. Which in my case was simply not true. I spoke to many people in the few days I had to make the decision and all had positive things to say about their experience with that particular drug.
-
I have used Alizin to abort an unplanned litter. Bitch was almost 6 weeks along by the time it was realised she was pregnant (no mating had been witnessed) and right at the top end of time when it can be done. Two injections a day or so apart. She passed a couple of pups about 48hrs later, not a real labour as such tho. She was fine, and has cycled normally (came back into season 2 months later and then back to her normal 6 monthly) and has conceived/whelped since then. Best of luck with your decision. :)

"Witnesses"... at 1am? inside the house? who he later texted - sickens me to think there were others there that stood by and did nothing Not sure how they can police a 5 year ban (which is woefully inadequate anyway!) What is to stop him or one of the other people he lives with going out and getting another puppy? As a breeder it concerns me that we have no way of knowing we might be selling to this person (or others that have committed similar acts) RIP poor puppy Man fined $7500 for beating puppy to death A WILSON man has been fined $7500 and banned from owning a pet for five years after beating his puppy to death. Chin Wei Chin, 22, was found guilty of one count of animal cruelty in Perth Magistrates Court today for killing his young female Shih-Tzu dog Cookie. The court was told that at 1am on March 3 this year, witnesses heard Mr Chin yelling at the dog, who was barking. Shortly after, witnesses allegedly heard several thumping sounds following by yelping noises. When someone went to investigate, Mr Chin said the dog had bitten him. The witness said the dog appeared to be frightened and hid under a bed. The dog was returned to its cage, but several minutes later further thumping noises and yelps were heard, continuing for about 15 minutes. The dog was found lying motionless on a bed in its cage with red eyes and was not breathing properly. Mr Chin told witnesses he had given the dog a pill, but the following morning the animal was dead. At about 2pm the same day, a witness received a mobile phone message from Mr Chin stating that he had killed the dog. An RSPCA inspector spoke to Mr Chin on March 5 and he told him the dog had a needle stuck in its throat. He admitted he would smack the puppy and knew it was wrong. He also claimed he took the dog to a vet, but further enquiries revealed there were no records of the dog attending a veterinary clinic.

I have never had any luck with drybed for my newborns - my bitches hate it and scrunch it up in a corner and pups spend all their time searching for nipples in it! Once they are up on their feet and moved from whelping box to puppy pen it is great for defining "bed" area from "toilet" area tho. I use outdoor/marine carpet you buy from Bunnings - synthetic type mat (comes on the big rolls) about .4mm thick, no backing. The one I get is a grass green colour. Cut to fit whelping box exactly - I line with news paper underneath too. It is great stuff not cold but doesn't get hot either, fairly stiff so not easy for the bitch to dig up and pups can't get rolled up in it, great traction for the pups, wont hold liquids. To clean I just take it outside and hose it off (use a little dishwashing detergent if it is really grotty), 20 mins hanging in the sun and it is dry. When they are very young you will actually be able to just flip it over and use the reverse side before you need to clean it.

Cleanrun.com Has Free Shipping On Lots Of Toys...
winpara replied to megan_'s topic in General Dog Discussion
My order last time CR had free shipping contained both raccoon tail chaser and sheepskin tuggies. It was stickered as being opened and checked by customs and nothing was confiscated. -
Best thing I have found is "Crib Stop" spray. Just dont breathe in as you are applying it! We went travelling across the country for 6 weeks and the younger dogs started chewing the inside of the dog trailer. Without the spray I don't think it would have been in one piece by the time we got home! It is important that you provide the pup with lots of other different things that he is allowed to chew tho. :)

I know you have made your decision, but in case anyone else reads this wondering the same thing... I have sent many girls interstate (Perth to Syd/Melb/Adl)for mating. All but one have fallen pregnant. The one that missed went to a dog who was later found to have fertility issues, she was also sent to another dog interstate and got pregnant no problem. Quite a few of the girls were maiden bitches. I have used chilled semen once on a (maiden) girl I didn't really want to put on a plane. 4 progesterone tests at $34each. TCI ($350ish). Collection/chilling of the semen and stud owners costs ($200). Urgent freight Melb --> Perth $150 add to that petrol etc for extra running around and I didn't get much change out of $900. The bitch missed... would have cost me half that amount to fly her to Melb and back. I wont be doing chilled semen again. :)

One prog test at 71 tells you that she has ovulated the problem is you don't know when. If it was up to 3 days earlier then there is a good chance you will get pups if it was longer then probably not. My GP bitch ovulates extremely early in her cycle. Last season I noticed her in on the Thursday night, prog tested Friday afternoon (so day 2)was 5.4. Prog tested on Monday morning and she was 21.1, Tuesday was 35.4. So she had ovulated on the Monday on day 5 of her season. She was one who had tricked me on the previous season when I had her tested on day 7 and she was on 79. So yes, if you don't get pups or even if you do and plan to breed her again in the future I would be getting that baseline pretty much as soon as you notice her in season. And then test every 2-3 days after that so you know when the rise is. In the meantime, fingers crossed!! :)

Ankc Approved Reader Hip And Elbows
winpara replied to **Super_Dogs**'s topic in General Dog Discussion
Jennifer Richardson's fees are currently- $105 Hips only or hips and elbows $55 Elbows only I used her for my last lot (4 x hips and elbows) Not the fastest result, took a couple of weeks tho I believe that others have had theirs returned quicker than that. I thought the scores were very fair, though from what I have seen of some x-rays sent to Rawlinson and his scoring I could have got a much "better" result from him. However I am more interested in accurate than "good" IYKWIM. Since the retirement of Wyburn, Richardson is the new approved scorer for the GSDCA which was a factor in my decision to send to her, even though I do not own GSD's -
Hoping it is ok to post this here as I am sure readers of this section are the most likely to know... :) I am looking for resources with regard to introducing an adult dog into a new home. Something with suggestions or tips and tricks to help the dog bond with its new owners and settle into a new and different environment. Either links to online articles or email me at [email protected] Thanks :D

Urgent Advice Required - Back To Back Litter After C Section
winpara replied to Delviktar's topic in Breeders Community
I have had had a bitch who had a c-section and then whelped the next litter 6 months to the day later. The back to back was her planning, not mine! I had decided on an elective c-section as soon as she went into first stage, however she was too quick and delivered the first pup as I was packing the car! Both litters were of normal size, the whelping went without incident. It was her 2nd and 3rd litter. HOWEVER whilst all went well it is not something I would plan to do, and I worried from the time I realised she was pregnant until they arrived and both bitch and pups were safe. Certainly not something I would do if I wanted to maximize the chances of a good sized litter either. -
yep sure is I have heard them in the last couple of weeks, pups do need to be relatively close to the outside tho.

Progesterone Level For Frozen Semen Insemination
winpara replied to winpara's topic in Breeders Community
Giving it a miss this time *sigh* Apparently they can inseminate at about that level - the problem with her of course is that as there was only one test to go by we don't know how quickly she got there. ie- if she had been going up slowly and then jumped to that level that would be ok but if she has already been up there for a day or two then we will have missed the boat. And there is no way to tell now. From her physical signs I would have considered her *hot* and ready to mate yesterday, and had I planned a natural breeding would have done so. But not risking my precious frozen fishies on it! Will cross my fingers and hope she gives a few more signs next time, and she will be having white bedding too I think! My Border Collies advertise to the world the minute they are in season and all take at least 12 days to be ready... unlike this fräulein who hardly swells, is spotless and goes from 0 to hot in a week! There I was thinking GP stood for German Pinscher, thinking now it might be Grand Prix! and she is red so that makes her go even faster ;) -
I have a bitch I was hoping to breed this season with frozen semen (TCI). Unfortunately as she is very clean I have missed the start date of her season and only found out last night when one of the boys alerted me to her. I had checked her about 10 days ago and she definitely wasn't in however first prog test today gave the result of 79 I believe optimum level for natural mating is 20-25 but have known someone who had a natural vaginal insemination at a level of 80 and got a litter of 10. I haven't done frozen before but I am thinking this level is probably too high? Tomorrow mid morning will be the earliest I could arrange the insemination, around 24 hrs after the prog test so levels will no doubt be even higher then. I only have one breeding of this dog so want to be 100% sure it has the best chance to result in a litter. I will of course speak to the vet in the morning but hoping someone with experience may give me some insight tonight. Luckily the bitch tends to cycle every 4 months so if we have missed her it isn't too long to wait to try again.

I'd like to know what the hell happened to the events calendar! Seems there are only herding events scheduled for the next few months as that is all that is listed. And where do you access the forms from? (litter Reg, semen transfer etc?) It is a shame that they couldn't have at least had all of the basics on the new site before taking down the old (and functional) one.

Dog Walking Machine Vs Human Treadmill
winpara replied to Heidii's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Can I ask where you got your treadmill from? Googled them but the company is in the USA? -
I have had a bitch who had very pale green discharge for nearly a week before she whelped. The first and so far only one ever to do this. Was an older bitch and a biggish litter and she started out ok but did need a caesar for the last two pups (was probably just coincidental rather than anything to do with the discharge). Anyway all pups were fine except for one of those last two - but again I think that was probably due to a somewhat inexperienced/incompetent vet rather than the discharge. (Not our usual vet - put dog far too deeply under and also took a lot of time stuffing around looking at the uterus rather than getting the second pup out) If it is correct, that temp drop should indicate labour within 24hrs. If she was mine and did not start making a move by morning I would visit the vet for an ultrasound and progesterone test to check the pups are ok and see where shes at. Good luck

Actually it didn't sell at all. The bidding originally only got to $20 and with a couple of hours to go the seller cancelled the bids stating the item had been badly water damaged in the "rain" and would need to be relisted. The "rain" consisted of less than 2mm so methinks it was a bit of a furfy The winning bidder *cough* had their sale cancelled by the seller for the same reason. So don't feel bad... very dodgy seller who obviously wanted the $550 buy it now price - have no idea why they would bother to even list it starting so low tho if there was no intent to sell it at less than that.

Yes I have one... demon bitch from hell... aka Mia (more often pronounced Meeehaaarrr) Love her to bits even tho she is loud and bossy and demanding. She is either 1000% full on or fast asleep! I own/breed Border Collies and they can't hold a candle to her unbounded energy. She can be stubborn and will push the boundaries of acceptable behaviour on a regular basis. But she is also a sweetheart and the most loyal dog I have ever had the pleasure of owning - she makes me feel special :D She is also red ( I wanted a red one - cos everyone knows red ones go faster :D ) and baby Mia From the moment she arrived she had no trouble holding her own in wrestle games with the Border Collies
